Rule Breaker: Forbidden Love Romance Kindle Edition
Rules are meant to protect the innocent and keep danger at bay—except for me, the lines blur, and it all started when I met the ultimate bad boy.
But is he? Miller Davenport might be big, bad and brimming with sin but he’s confessed his crimes and for ten years he’s served his time and walked the line. Everyone deserves a second chance, right? And as his nurse—the one person who understands him—I can’t help but count the days till we can be together properly, without guards watching over us and without every look and word we share censored.
When that day comes, though, will our desire for each other explode and take me to the new heights he’s promised? And if so, how will I survive such intensity? One thing is for sure. With Miller I’ll be whisked up in a whirlwind of dark energy and a tornado of lust, and likely taken to the very edge of what I can handle. I can’t help a few nerves, though, as release day approaches, because if it all comes crashing down, who can I depend on when I’ve ridden into the sunset with a man who’s broken all the rules? Will I be saved or will I have pushed everyone and everything too far?

- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2016Unlike my friend Bambi, I've never been one for bad boys, and Miller is the ultimate bad boy, being an ex-con and a supposedly reformed bad boy. When we meet him, he's not even an "ex", he's still a convicted criminal though about to be let out after ten years in jail. I really didn't know how I'd feel about him or this story.
Let's start with the fact that this is written by Lily Harlem, one of my all time favorite erotic romance writers. I'll pretty much read anything she writes so this has been on my to read list for ages. It's crazy sexy hot and it starts out with some serious sexy shenanigans and just keeps going. The sexy doesn't let up and it's classic Lily Harlem but it does surprise me with the relationship between Lacey and Shay.
Lacey. There's a lady who confused the heck out of me. This is because Lily has thrown in a rather interesting love triangle between her and Shay, and later on adding Miller to the mix. There's lots of sexy times going on between Lacey and Shay, and Lacey and Miller. I had a difficult time reconciling to the fact that this is not your traditional romance with one guy and one girl, but then again, Lily is anything but traditional in the relationships she writes. It all adds to the spice of things. Even by the time I got to the end of the book, I couldn't make up my mind about Lacey. Did I like her? Can I condone her actions? Do I agree with her? I don't know. For all of my confusion, Lacey is a lady who marches to the beat of her own drum. She has her own distinct set of morals and she's clear in her own heart and mind of what is right and what is wrong. She's kind, caring, forgiving and big on second chances. She has a heart big enough to love two men though very differently. I found her somewhat naive at some points of the story, but I also understand the heart wants what it wants and for Lacey, her heart wanted Miller, for all he was an ex-con. She had a heart big enough to forgive and I admire her for that.
As for Miller, he's a bit of a conundrum, isn't he? Found guilty (and he was guilty!) of a crime and incarcerated for ten years. Once out, things get a little shady and some things are questionable though as a reader I'm kept mostly in the dark with it until it all comes to a head. Miller is in love with Lacey, and it's clear he's doing his best to walk the straight and narrow for her, but sometimes, you can't help who you're around and the influences they have on you. They can lead you astray. At the end of it, Miller really was reformed and I'm very glad for it. The whole bad boy gone good works and let's face it, he's sexy as all heck, so it's not hard to love him.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story even though I'm still not sure how I feel about bad boys in general. I've always been a good guy kind of girl but maybe if more bad boys were like Miller, I could get on board with it. :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2016When I started Rule Breaker, I thought I'd be reading a sexy romp. It's that, but also much more. One step at a time, the author leads the reader into a dark relationship between Lacey, a prison nurse, and her patient, Miller Davenport. Forbidden actions can't keep the two of them from having explicit sexual thoughts about the other. And then Miller is released from prison and the two are free to pursue their attraction.
Yes, it's very graphic sexually, which for me was a treat. But it is the underlying psychological development of the characters that rings very true and makes this one of those stories that keeps intruding in your thoughts, urging you to go back and read it again. I probably will. It was that good.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2016This book certainly pushed my bad boy boundaries. It was very odd for me - I didn't know I had bad boy boundaries! I have read assassins, mafia bosses, and bada** bikers without a second thought to their activities. Some of them have even served time and been fresh out of prison. But for some reason, Miller still being in prison at the outset of the interaction/relationship gave me pause. I guess it just didn't fit into my bad boy fantasy box. It's the realistic ugly part of bad boys, the part that is not romantic, so I think I normally push those consequences to the back of my mind when I am reading this trope. You certainly can't ignore that aspect in Rule Breaker, it's very in your face.
I am learning that we can always count on Lily Harlem to do something unique and outside of the box. I have to say that this is a bad boy romance unlike any other that I have read. She really pushed the envelope with her protagonists, and I was left feeling very conflicted even as I enjoyed the story.
Lacey is a different sort of heroine. She is a bit crass and slutty, yet also incredibly naive for all that she works as a prison nurse. There were things happening in the story that she was totally blind to and I just wanted to yell at her to open her fakakta eyes! But other times I had a good emotional connection to her and could feel the conflicted lust she had for the two men in the story.
Miller. What can I say about him? He may be the only bad boy I have read where I said "nope - he's not for me." I liked reading about him, but he won't be appearing in any of my smutty fantasies. He is just too bad for my tastes... even if he wasn't the worst criminal. Miller does something in this story that I could just never forgive. I felt betrayed, and there was nothing that could redeem him in my eyes. I couldn't believe the angle the story took at that point - it totally blindsided me, and I wasn't near as naive as Lacey!
I was also conflicted about Shay, Lacey's cousin. Even though the pair are not related by blood, they had been raised as cousins their entire lives. So the relationship and experimentation that happened between the two was taboo and had me raising my eyebrows. Even so, I liked Shay and felt sorry for him... but I don't think I could support a relationship between he and Lacey any more than I could want Miller for myself.
So that is why I am conflicted. Lily broke all the rules! There was no single hero that I could root for. I don't know how to feel about how things ended. I think the hardest part for me is that I put myself in place of the leading female... and I couldn't see myself choosing either of these guys. I think I would have decided to go out in my own independent female blaze of glory and sworn off men. But that's the great thing about these books - they let you live as someone else for a little while. Thanks for the ride Lily!
4 conflicted stars / 5 flames.

This was a pretty good read, it had a slow start but picks up pretty quickly. I’m giving it 4 stars. Lacey is a prison nurse who has developed feelings for one of her inmates, Miller. On the day of his release he asks Lacey to meet him at a pub near the prison. When they meet the sparks are even more intense than they were when they were in the prison and a steamy affair begins. Lacey is worried that Miller isn’t really reformed but Miller sets out to be a good man for Lacey.
This is a super steamy read that was quite enjoyable. It had me on the edge of my seat once I hit the half way mark. I look forward to reading more from Lily Harlem.
