Runaway Magic (Guardians of Boston Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 315 ratings

Cym:

Freak. Disaster. Mistake. Cym had heard it all.

His magical family wasn’t content to lock him away ‘for the greater good’ anymore. No. Now they wanted him dead.

Protection? What was that? Cym had never known anyone who wanted to keep him safe. Either he relied on himself or he was toast. So when he landed in the lap of an assassin, Cym thought his luck was up. Little did he know his story was only beginning.

Fourteen:

No morals and a quick mind. How many times had Fourteen heard himself described that way? Usually right before getting sent on a mission they’d have to delete from his mind once he completed it.

But The Company would never be able to make him forget the terrified young man who landed in his lap during a firefight. Not when his touch made the icy cage of Fourteen’s conditioning burn away.

For someone who could barely be considered a person, Fourteen was finding it shockingly easy to act like one around Cym. Maybe that was why he was willing to do anything to keep him safe. He’d have to break Cym’s bad habit of running from him first, though.

Runaway Magic is a 119,000 word, slow-burn MM urban fantasy. You’ll find found family, obsessive love interests, and, of course, magic.

Zile is a proud member of the alphabet mafia and loves to write neurodiverse main characters and explore their challenges in a lighthearted way. Zile tends to lean into tropes involving grumpy/sunshine pairings and jealous and possessive main characters. When not writing, you can find Zile binging C-dramas, baking, and playing with all of his cats.

OK, so the first thing I have to say is I really wish in the beginning of the book. Maybe the forward the author said how cym is supposed to be pronounced. I literally had to Google it. Now other than that the book as pretty great world building and the characters really draw you in and by the end you are completely invested and want to read the next book just to know what's going to happen next ( I hope that book comes out super soon! ) I would say this book is for people who like magic and tech mixed mixed in a new fun way!
    I really enjoyed the book.

I downloaded Runaway Magic as soon as it released, but it sat in my TBR until yesterday. I loved the multiple POVs, the flow, the characters, everything. It's a fun world with a fun magic system that book 1 only scratched the surface of. I'm eagerly awaiting book 2.

I really loved these characters and the world building in this one. My first time reading this author and I’m really happy I found them. Great storyline and writing top notch. Only disappointment was due to low heat- very slow burn. Looks like will be a series but not sure if same MC since have multiple pov as well which I’m not a fan of but it was helpful here. Hoping for more featuring these two but also need Jack and Marshall to headline at some point!

Action/ Adventure with an interesting Magic system and a slow burn love story all rolled into one.

The story hits the ground running and I stayed up till 1 am to finish it and that hasn’t happened to me in a while.

For me the story slowed down just a bit when the secondary characters (The Guardians) were brought in until I realized ( pretty quickly) that their story was almost as interesting as the 2 MC’s with what I’m hoping will develop into a love story between 2 of the male Guardians in that secondary cast ::fingers crossed so hard!!!!::

I loved how Cym and Fourteen slowly learned to trust each other. I loved how attracted they were to each other and I LOVED how touch starved each was for the other.

Heat level I’d say was a 1/5 but wait! Hear me out. The story of this book took course over a 48 hour period. Bc there was the touching starved snuggling and the new feelings for each other I didn’t need them to jump into bed right away…..That said I REALLY hope there’s a second book and they’d better get some smexy time or I’m going to pass out from being edged this whole first book LOL.

I liked how tenacious Cyn is about staying alive, staying free and then protecting Fourteen (who is a serious bad @ss and is smitten that he’s trying to be taken care of::heart eye emoji::). Even though Cym looks like a slender twink he’s packing some serious mojo when he starts figuring his magic out.

If the second book ::oh please book gods let it be a trilogy!!!!!!!:: is as good as the first I’ll be buying these bc it’s worth a reread!

This book is so good! It is well thought out and very interesting. The growing relatioships(romantic and otherwise) are wonderful and so lovely to see(getting to know all of the characters is my favorite). I truly look forward to the next book!
Action, adventure, intrigue, magic, mayhem, a slow burn romance, and a found family dynamic on the tail end.
    Five glowing stars!

Seriously, Cym and Fourteen are everything! The hurt comfort! The mysterious magical shield! The righteous side characters and *their* whole plot arc. Love seeing the journey both Cym and Fourteen go on through the book, both independently and together.

I’m torn between being delighted that we’ll get more of them (hopefully!) as they take down the bad guys once and for all and also being devastated that we have to wait for their complete HEA. Luckily, I have every confidence Elliven will deliver with the sequel bc ever since book of his is wonderful.

This book was not what I expected, but the world is interesting, the magic is unique, and the two main characters are compelling. I am definitely looking forward to Book 2.

For those fans of fantasy, this is an excellent and well written book which leaves you with not necessarily a cliff hanger but more a note to tie the series together. The most crucial and immediate happenings are satisfactorily resolved. Extremely well written with gorgeously portrayed world building. Loved the characters and how they developed. Should they get counseling? Probably. Will they? Probably not and for them it will be okay. Their broken pieces fit. Looking forward to seeing more of this couple.

    I am here for THIS.

I may or may not be in love with Fourteen. He is just... one of a kind, truly. And don't even get me started on Dreamy Jack. Seriously. That man. <3

I cannot express how happy I am to see this serious being reimagined. It. Is. Perfecto.

I can't wait for the next book.

I can't explain how much I loved this book! But I'll try 😂 it's filled with so much action that I used to love about books I grew up with. Zile created a whole new world and the beginning of an epic story I can't wait to read. Cym is such a powerful character, while he finds himself so often lost, he has the power to help people at every turn and is such an amazing protagonist in the story. His human shield Fourteen is this complex mix of confusion and a person trying to break free of the hold of his past. I loved their story, loved the way it ended and how there is a bit of the story that is exciting to follow in the next book. The introduction of the guardians was such a brilliant inclusion in the book, Marshall, Jack and Adelle are the most insane, powerful and fun group of people. Zile created a world I can see in my head and it's playing out like my favorite tv show! Can't wait for more. Seriously, you need to read this book!

It's been a minute since I last felt the need to write a review, but this was very good. The magic in this world is so real, visceral and tangible. The process of working with magic is used to reveal many layers of characters and their histories. Beautifully clever, completely engrossing.
