The Cost of Freedom (Starship Freedom Book 2) Kindle Edition
Then the aliens attacked.
Now, once more, the legendary Freedom flies to war.
The war is brutal. The enemy is merciless. The rahs, vicious arachnids from deep space, crave only one thing. Human flesh.
Before this terror, Earth’s fleet crumbles. Starships burn. Millions die.
But the Freedom still flies. James King, her gruff old commander, still fights.
The Freedom will never surrender. The Freedom will never flee. The long, cold night has come to Earth, but the Freedom shines bright.
The survivors of the fleet rally behind her. All brave souls heed her call. The Freedom sounds the cry of Earth: We will win!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2021If you haven't read Starship Freedom, then I'm afraid you are going to encounter SPOILERS in nearly every page of this second volume. You are going to plod through a terrific story without understanding the background or the amazing characters or the beginning of a powerful tale of faith and perseverance. Please read Starship Freedom book 1 before continuing because there be SPOILERS ahead!!

They scoffed at the idea the Starship Freedom would ever be needed again, or could even rise if the occasion demanded. Then the Rah attacked. Giant malicious spiders with a taste for blood and human meat, the Rah eclipsed the forces Earth arrayed against them until Commander James King woke Freedom and took her into the fight. With the most deadly weaponry devised by mankind, the great Starship Freedom entered the battle.
The leader of the Rah forces, an enormous grey spider with red legs, the prince of rahs, Hel'rah is his name. Son of Skel'rah. Grandson of the rah emperor. Hel'rah and his forces overcame Earth's defenses and forced the evacuation of Alliance forces from the planet. With no protection, the citizens of Earth were easy prey, filling the bellies of the damn spiders, filling females full of spider eggs, devouring men and children. The Alliance war is over. Defeated by the Rah, their forces retreat into space. Can the Freedom save the day? Can the Freedom and James King make a difference? Is it all over for humanity? We'll see.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2021The first novel was an outstanding storyline populated with strong characterizations. It is a challenge to continue the storyline into this second novel with the same impact as the first. This storyline suffers by comparison. The whole Darkland subplot just did not work with me. Words like silly and trite came to my mind. Still, this is a powerful story and I look forward to the third novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2023I have a degree of arachnophobia, so this series is a challenge. The journey through Darkland was like a nightmare. After two books, I'm committed to the next book. It fills me with both anticipation and dread.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2022Congratulations to Daniel Arenson for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and exciting author who not only write intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2021I never imagined the use of a theme park in a sci-fi military novel. It seems like a well written cross between Stephen King and David Weber. It portrays the bravery of military soldiers fighting for the future of mankind but also shows the fear that can cause some to falter.
It is clever on how it develops the main characters and their support personnel, including bots and artificial intelligent. The bots on the ship and their advancement and desire to be distinguished from each other is a great addition to the story.
Sometimes the second in a series is weak but this storyline stays strong.
I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read
A good read, I enjoyed it though finding which book to read at the moment difficult. This is one of several books reading and well finished this first. Make sure you read the earlier books to help with the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written
Couldn’t put it down., read it in two days. Every main character has their personality which makes you care about them. It’s fast pace and keeps moving forward. The author keeps you engaged by his descriptions of the action. Recommend this book to sci-fi lovers.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Scifi Sequel
The battle for humanity continues both on Earth, in close orbit and the far reaches of the Solar System yet the military forces of Earth can not trade hull for hull against the invading Rah an arachnid intelligence which feeds on its conquered enemies and also uses them to host their eggs. As the space battle turns ever more in favour of the Rah the commanders of the Earth factions now united against a common foe decide to break contact and fight a guerilla style campaign but when a Rah Prince kidnaps Commander Kings grand daughter a suicidal mission is undertaken to raid a huge complex on the dark side of the moon. The terrors that await the force led by James King, his son Colonel Bastian and 49 other marines will be with them for the rest of their lives but for the sake of child and the opportunity to capture a Rah Prince for interrogation is too good an opportunity to pass up.
The Cost of Freedom is wonderfully over the top space opera with larger than life characters, action that defies realism (in context) and situations that have you perplexed (imagine Fast & Furious and you know what I am getting at). The overall story however is entertaining, the action never lets up and if you accept that it doesn't make a lot of sense then you will be more than satisfied. The third novel "We Fight For Freedom" is on the way and I'll be buying my copy when it arrives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unimpressed
I buy a lot of SF, ranging from thud and blunder on the skyways to the hard stuff like Alastair Reynolds, Gary Gibson, etc. and I regret to have to inform you that that this aromatic pile of ordure fails pretty much every test of a good book.
The actions of the primary characters would lead to all of them facing courts martial at best with the distinct possibility of summary execution.
The characters themselves are, to mix metaphors, both two-dimensional and wooden. There are also any number of instances of Deus ex Machina.
On the plus side, for which it gets the one star, the narrative STYLE is good.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think so.
