Spanish for Pilgrims: Learn Spanish to walk the Camino de Santiago (Spanish Edition) [Print Replica] Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

If you want to make the most of your journey on the Camino, don’t hesitate to start learning Spanish right now!

Spanish for Pilgrims (SFP) is a self-paced book, specifically designed to teach you how to communicate in Spanish while you walk on the Camino de Santiago. SFP is an innovative program based on active methodology to genuinely help you learn the language.

This is not a phrasebook to memorize fixed Spanish sentences for survival on the Camino. My goal is to help you understand and effectively learn the language, enabling you to construct your own sentences and communicate
successfully in various situations. As part of this method, the book provides structured and interconnected lessons and exercises, including audios and videos that cover the grammar and vocabulary needed to achieve a basic
level of Spanish. If you are familiar with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), you will cover the A1 grammar content.

This workbook has been created as a self-study method for learning Spanish, but simultaneously, with my guidance as your teacher, I will accompany you throughout every stage of the Camino if you choose to join our free online
classes to practice your lessons.

I’m sure you’re already preparing for your pilgrimage and dreaming about your next Camino. Learning Spanish in advance is a must—it will greatly enhance your experience. You’ll be able to interact with locals, immerse yourself in the culture, and enjoy your Camino on a deeper level. Make the most of your journey by diving into this beautiful language, which will help you connect with the hearts of the people you meet along the way.

I wear multiple hats, and I love it!

I have a degree in Hispanic Philology from the Complutense University of Madrid and a Master's in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language from UNED. I have worked as a Spanish teacher at the UN Multilingualism Center (Geneva) and at the universities of Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town, as well as an academic coordinator at Lernen Madrid, a language academy specializing in teaching Spanish and German.

Additionally, I train ELE (Spanish as a Foreign Language) teachers: I collaborate with UIMP and worked as a teaching advisor at Edelsa Publishing for two years.

Currently, I run Fresh Linguas, a company specializing in teacher training and organizing language immersion experiences in both Madrid and along the Camino de Santiago. I also teach Business Spanish, Colloquial Spanish, and General Spanish (101, 102, and 103) as an adjunct professor in international programs at various American universities in Madrid and Toledo.

Moreover, I am the author of eight graded readers for Spanish learners. I love writing and decided to channel my passion for literature into creating these learning materials. I also enjoy developing didactic resources, which is a part of my profession I find particularly fulfilling.

I have extensive experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language to adults, children, and teenagers. Additionally, I have taught Spanish Language and Literature at the secondary school level.

A teacher by vocation and an aspiring writer, I consider myself a passionate advocate of creativity and the use of playful elements in teaching. And, of course, I am an avid enthusiast of the Camino de Santiago and sports.

A useful and informative book for pilgrims wanting to improve their Spanish language for the Camino. While I have a long way to go in terms of proficiency, I look forward to trying out my newly attained skills when I return to the Camino this summer. I really appreciate hearing the Spanish accent, via the QR code links, which is quite different from what I hear on Duolingo. Now if I could only get the Spanish people to stop talking so fast…

I bought this book a few weeks ago and I am really enjoying working with it. The exercises and activities are fun and really teach you the vocabulary and grammar you will use on the Camino. I like the tips and insights into actually walking on the Camino, they help you to prepare for and understand what to expect on your journey. There are also links to videos and online exercises for even more practice. The book is very comprehensive and you can tell that a lot of thought was put into writing it. It’s a great resource and is perfectly targeted to someone who has just a tiny bit of experience with Spanish. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun and Varied Introduction to Spanish
Reviewed in France on February 12, 2025
The book is a lot of fun because it is very varied; there is a bit of everything: text, lots of pictures, videos, and online activities.
I really enjoy doing the exercises on paper and then checking and correcting them with the online activities. The grammar is simple and easy to understand.
It is definitely an unusual introduction to the Spanish language—fun, not heavy, and, above all, effective.
This book truly enhances Spanish language skills in an enjoyable way.

This book is a great aid to learning both what you need to know to do a Camino and how to talk about these things once on a Camino in Spanish. The written structure is augmented with interactive tasks ( utilizing QR codes) and videos . The high level teaching skills of the author is apparent in the way the lessons are organized, implemented and reinforced. I recommend this book to any pilgrim wanting to make the most of their Camino experience.

Starting to use the book was slow going as you do have to use it in combination with scanning codes to see videos and supplementary material. Now that I’ve figured that out, I am finding the content and process to be helpful.
