About the author

Mark Roman has been working his way through the alphabet in search of a suitable career. He’s sampled architecture, accountancy, auditing and astrophysics. For a while he worked as a computer programmer before realizing he’d skipped over ‘B’. So he took up bioinformatics, which is where he is now. He worries that becoming an author would put him back to ‘A’, with the whole alphabet still stretching out ahead of him.
He lives in London with his wife (also a scientist) and two young children, neither of whom wants to become a scientist. In his work he has published around 80 papers, reviews and book chapters - although, if you want to read them, you’ll need to look under a different name.
As a lifelong soccer fan he is no stranger to the extreme emotions of elation and despair (but mainly despair - in fact, almost entirely despair), particularly from his own performances on the football field. Still, he firmly believes there’s no problem that can’t be solved by a nice cup of tea. Except, perhaps, global warming.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNeed a laugh in your life? Chuckle along with the quirky characters populating the twilight zone of Sci-Fi and Brit humour where Libel and Intuition turn deadly, and Rights get wronged. Be forewarned, things can get hairy at times.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2024Format: KindleI had the honor to beta read some of these stories before they were published, and I loved them!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2023Format: KindleI'm not really a big fan of deliberately humorous material, let alone humorous sci-fi short stories, so I can't directly compare this book to the gems of the genre, if such things ever exist. But I found Mark Roman's book very well-written, witty and totally worth the time. A few stories made me laugh heartily, while others were at least in a chuckle territory. Now I need to pick the "Shorts I" by the same author to see what came before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't decide which one I like the best.....
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a great collection of really funny and well written stories. I'm struggling to decide which one I like the best. It could be the story about the social media influencer who influences aliens to make a disastrous decision. Then again I also really like the one with the dimension-hopping train and the jobsworth ticket inspector. Oh and what about the one with the humorous historical fiction author who gets into big trouble in the afterlife for the stuff he wrote about some famous characters from history ... that's a really good one. Actually, the more I think about it, they're all my favourites. I hope there's a Sci-Fi Shorts III or a series of Sci-Fi Longs would be very welcome from this bloke.
I see from his bio that the author is a scientist. I wonder if his science papers are funny. I bet they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi Shorts II (Relatos cortos de ciencia ficción II)

5.0 out of 5 stars Scintillating sci-fi
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis second anthology of sci-fi stories from the prolific Mark Roman is just as funny, witty and inventive as the first. It’s one of those books where you read one story and think ‘Oh, just one more’ and before you know it the streets have gone quiet, the wife has gone to bed, and the cat is mewling hungrily at your feet. Yes, you've read the whole lot in one sitting. Favourite line? “Why don’t I show Kamra my tubers?” Funniest story? Hard to choose, but for me it was “Quick Sale”. I laughed out loud when an alien slime ball comes into contact with Earth’s most powerful “influencer.’’ ‘I hail from Brenneth’moer,’ says the slimy alien, cursing his aching tentacles.’ To which the dumb influencer replies: ‘Isn’t that in Wales?’
Keep ‘em coming, Mr Roman – these sci-fi shorts are comedy gold!
