4.2 out of 5 stars 165 ratings

The Naval Knaves.
On September 15, 1894, an anarchist attempted to bomb the Greenwich Observatory.
All he succeeded in blowing up was himself.
But he did not act alone.

Sherlock Holmes discovers that he was part of an intricate web of spies, foreign naval officers, and a drop-dead-gorgeous, not-English princess.
Once again, suspicion lands on poor Percy Phelps.
Now he’s in a senior position in the Admiralty.
Holmes has to rescue Percy,
But he has a much bigger worry.
A massive, terrorist explosion is planned. It will take many lives.
But where? And when?

This New Sherlock Holmes Mystery is a tribute to
The Adventure of the Naval Treaty. It is based on actual historical events that took place in the 1890s. Click on the link and learn how bad things really got back then.

About the Author

It's elementary, my dear reader. What else, after fifty years of enjoying the stories of Sherlock Holmes, is a recently retired gentleman to do with his time but write more stories about the world's most beloved detective? Craig Stephen Copland confesses that he discovered Sherlock Holmes when, some time in the muddled early 1960s he pinched his older brother's copy of the immortal stories and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked. He is very grateful to his high school English teachers in Toronto who inculcated in him a love of literature and writing, and even inspired him to be an English major at the University of Toronto. There he was blessed to sit at the feet of both Northrup Frye and Marshall McLuhan, and other great literary professors, who led him to believe that he was called to be a high school English teacher. It was his good fortune to come to his pecuniary senses, abandon that goal and pursue a varied professional career that took him to over one hundred countries and endless adventures. He considers himself to have been and to continue to be one of the luckiest men on God's good earth. A few years back he took a step in the direction of Sherlockian studies and joined the Sherlock Holmes Society of Canada--also known as the Toronto Bootmakers. In May of 2014 this esteemed group of scholars announced a contest for the writing of a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although he had never tried his hand at fiction before, Craig entered and was pleasantly surprised to be selected as one of the winners. Having enjoyed the experience he decided to write more of the same, and is now on a mission to write a new Sherlock Holmes mystery that is related to and inspired by each of the sixty stories in the original Canon. He currently lives and writes in Toronto, New York, and the Okanagan Valley and looks forward to finally settling down when he turns ninety.

Dear fellow lovers of historical mysteries: It's elementary, my dear reader. What else, after reaching the age of joyful retirement is a refined gentleman to do with his time but write more stories about Sherlock Holmes or the fascinating world of New York City between the wars?

Craig Stephen Copland confesses that he discovered Sherlock Holmes when, some time in the muddled early 1960s he pinched his older brother's copy of the immortal stories and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked. He first visited New York City in the summer of 1963 and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked.

He is very grateful to his high school English teachers at Scarlet Heights Collegiate Institute in Toronto who inculcated in him a love of literature and writing, and even inspired him to be an English major at the University of Toronto.

In May of 2014, this esteemed group of scholars announced a contest for the writing of a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although he had never tried his hand at fiction before, Craig entered and was pleasantly surprised to be selected as one of the winners. Having enjoyed the experience he decided to write more of the same and went on a mission to write a new Sherlock Holmes mystery novel that was related to and inspired by each of the sixty stories in the original Canon.

Having competed that task—sixty short novels and twenty short stories—in the autumn of2023, he set out on a new quest. He is currently writing a series of mystery/thriller books set in New York City during the era between World Wars One and Two. Each story takes place in a subsequent year. The series began in 1920 and will end in 1941.

While writing these stories, he and his fabulous wife have been living in Toronto, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, New York, Bahrain, Kuala Lumpur and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. They might settle down when he turns ninety. Or not.

I got hooked on Mr. Copeland's books several months ago and I consider him the best of Sherlock Holmes stories...I look forward to his next novel and I guarantee you will love him too if you've enjoyed Sir Doyle's classics.

I don't know if anyone other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle could gain 5 stars from me, so maybe I'm a bit stingy but this is definitely one of the better non-canon Sherlock Holmes stories. It held my interest enough that I ordered another in the series.

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written Sherlock Holmes Mystery book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great Sherlock Holmes Mystery movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

This kindle e-book novella is from my Kindle Unlimited account book 25 of the series

Holmes and Watson are called upon to investigate the missing ship ⛵ plans. There is lots of twist, turns, action, misdirection, and murder leading to the unexpected conclusion.

I would recommend this series and author to 👍 readers of British 🏰 mystery novels and fans of Sherlock Holmes. 2024

I rarely write reviews, but after reading so many of Mr. Copland's pastiches, I feel I have to respond. I've enjoyed them all, and applaud him for taking on the challenge of writing one for each of the books in the canon. He's done a very nice job and while some of them end more quickly than one might like, they all (at least, the ones that I've read) are most enjoyable.

It will never be mistaken for Conan Doyle, but can stand on its own. An enjoyable, if all too brief story

Mr. Copland once more out-Watsons Watson. The frantic dash to the ferries, arriving in the nick of time, is every bit as breathless as the rescue of Lady Frances Carfax.

I did really enjoy this. I think Craig Stephen Cooland captured the essence of both Sherlock and Watson perfectly, but all so the views of the people of the time as well.

I only had 2 really complaints of the book. First the "villains" of the book were pretty obvious from the begining. However that is not unusual Sherlock Holmes stories, and the hidden plot was quite cleverly done so we can ignore that one. The second is that almost the last third of the kindle file is advertising the other book in the series. I hot to the end of the book the saw I was on 66% so I thought there must be more to come, but it was extract from another book, and blurb and links to the other books in the series.

All is all a good short story. That captures Sherlock's brilliance or deduction, not his naivety of social etiquette/events. It is also always good to she the villain is a mach for him.

    Has American spellings not English.

People go to see the sights not the sites.

Too much reliance on spellchecker and not proofreading.
