The Kidnapping of Baby Carfax: A New Sherlock Holmes Mystery (New Sherlock Holmes Mysteries Book 45) Kindle Edition
She’s back. She returned to 221B Baker Street a few weeks back asking for help from Sherlock Holmes. She acknowledged that years earlier she gave birth to a love child. That child has now been kidnapped and a ransom demand has been received. If not paid, the child, who is now a young woman, will suffer the same fate and Lady Carfax almost did two years ago. She will be buried alive.
Holmes and I set off to Europe to find and save the victim from a horrifying death. It does not take long before we discern that we have entered something much more serious than a dreadful kidnapping. Events that could affect the entire world are at stake.
If you might enjoy coming with me and Sherlock Holmes on a breakneck race back and forth through Europe, you really must buy this New Sherlock Holmes Mystery. So, please, don’t just sit there. Click and download now. The game if afoot. Sincerely, Dr. John. H. Watson

About the author

Dear fellow lovers of historical mysteries: It's elementary, my dear reader. What else, after reaching the age of joyful retirement is a refined gentleman to do with his time but write more stories about Sherlock Holmes or the fascinating world of New York City between the wars?
Craig Stephen Copland confesses that he discovered Sherlock Holmes when, some time in the muddled early 1960s he pinched his older brother's copy of the immortal stories and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked. He first visited New York City in the summer of 1963 and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked.
He is very grateful to his high school English teachers at Scarlet Heights Collegiate Institute in Toronto who inculcated in him a love of literature and writing, and even inspired him to be an English major at the University of Toronto. There he was blessed to sit at the feet of both Northrup Frye and Marshall McLuhan, and other great literary professors, who led him to believe that he was called to be a high school English teacher.
It was his good fortune to come to his pecuniary senses, abandon that goal and pursue a varied professional career that took him to over one hundred countries and endless adventures. He considers himself to have been and to continue to be one of the luckiest men on God's good earth.
A few years back he took a step in the direction of Sherlockian studies and joined the Sherlock Holmes Society of Canada--also known as the Toronto Bootmakers. In May of 2014, this esteemed group of scholars announced a contest for the writing of a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although he had never tried his hand at fiction before, Craig entered and was pleasantly surprised to be selected as one of the winners. Having enjoyed the experience he decided to write more of the same and went on a mission to write a new Sherlock Holmes mystery novel that was related to and inspired by each of the sixty stories in the original Canon.
Having competed that task—sixty short novels and twenty short stories—in the autumn of2023, he set out on a new quest. He is currently writing a series of mystery/thriller books set in New York City during the era between World Wars One and Two. Each story takes place in a subsequent year. The series began in 1920 and will end in 1941.
While writing these stories, he and his fabulous wife have been living in Toronto, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, New York, Bahrain, Kuala Lumpur and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. They might settle down when he turns ninety. Or not.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021The "consulting detective" strikes again when a missing baby appears on his horizon. Watson helps, of course. And together with the help of a terrific lady translator they disentangle a web of murder, deceit and long forgotten abandonment. At its deepest, it's an ode to the millions of abandoned children everywhere and to the fabulous new parents who adopted them, nurtured them and loved them. It's also a fun romp through Europe with plot twists and red herrings. Utterly enjoyable. I'm a fan of Craig Copland. I love his writing, humor and can't wait to read his next opus. This is number 45 of 60! Don't stop writing. Ever.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2021This was a totally engrossing tale. I couldn't put it down. From start to finish with twists and turns the author totally involves the reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 20217/22/1903, 221B Baker St. Pope Leo XIII (Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci) had died.
Mrs. Martha Louise Hudson (housekeeper/landlady, wife, née Sissons, Hillwood College) introduced Lady Frances Carfax (Rufton Manor Sevenoaks, Kent) to Mr. William “Sherlock” Scott Holmes (Scotland Yard consulting detective) & Dr. John Hamish Watson (husband, Sherlock's BMF, MD, author/writer).
She had sold her valuable Spanish jewelry, & now devotes her time/resources to support charities that bring relief to the poor, & particularly Dr. Bernardo’s homes for orphans.
Cordelia de Moreau (Cordelia de Moreau) had falling head over heels for Frances Carfax (French, waiter) & gotten pregnant.
11/22/1882, Dr. Theodora Kocher had delivered a baby girl who was named Alice Carfax.
Lady Frances handed a letter she just received to Mr. Holmes & Dr. Watson.
Lady Frances you must transfer £10,000 to account # 60628 of the OberBank, 23 Obernring 1032 or else.

7/23/1903, Mr. Holmes & Dr. Watson had agreed to go to Europe to rescue a young woman who was once a kidnapped child.
Now someone had shot at the 2 of them.
7/25/1903, Now the kidnapper wants £20,000. There were more threats/demands.
Mrs. Buckner (translator) was being an immense help to Mrs. Buckner translator investigation.
The kidnapper had sent a final note to the 3 of them.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written Sherlock Holmes Mystery book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great Sherlock Holmes Mystery movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2021Sherlock and Watson do it again. But this time there were surprising twists to the story. About the time I thought I had it figured out it changed. Really enjoyed this one. And I have read all of The books in the series.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are approached by a woman who wants to find her daughter she gave up for adoption 25 years ago. It comes to a happy ending.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021Delightful Sherlock Holmes story by one of the very best authors of the genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2021The author really must do better research. He has an end note of how accurate the book is. In fact the errors start almost with the first page
A couple First a 1903 Springfield is not a single shot rifle. It was a typical Mauser clone with a five round internal magazine. Six if you used the mag cutoff and also loaded one in the chamber.
Sidney Reilly (ace of spies) was probably the first modern intelligence agent. See the BBC Sam Neil series for their take on him. Or read Bruce Lockharts book for a more accurate description. He mostly was an agent for the British. Without question he was a very dangerous guy. But he was a master spy. Not a kidnapper and murderer uninvolved women and children He was the basis of Flemmings James Bond. Copeland makes such a point of how accurate book is. Sadly not the case here and not up with his better Holmes stories.
