The Adventure of Mata Hari's Harem: A New Sherlock Holmes Mystery (New Sherlock Holmes Mysteries Book 48) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 125 ratings

“The German ambassador, madam,” said Sherlock Holmes, “is reputed to be brilliant and very difficult.”
“My dear, Mr. Holmes,” she said. “He is a man. Like all men when they are drunk and in the throes of ecstasy, he will be easy.”
“I must warn you, he has a reputation amongst men who have encountered him of being dangerous.”
“And a reputation amongst women of falling asleep immediately after, if you know what I mean.”

Sherlock Holmes blushed ever so slightly. “Very well then, I shall expect your return with the document in forty-eight hours.”
He slid a small stack of gold coins over to her. Without inspecting them, she placed them in her purse.
“Oh, you do know how to make a lady happy, don’t you.”
She stood up from her chair in the bar at the Ritz Hotel in Paris. “I do believe I shall enjoy working with you, Mr. Holmes.”
Without warning, she bent down and planted a kiss on the cheek of Sherlock Holmes and then stood back up and gave him an odd look.
Mon dieu, why is I feel nothing from you? Were you neutered as a schoolboy?”
“Madam, a man must choose between being susceptible to the wiles of a woman, or being a good detective. He cannot have both. Allow me to wish you Godspeed.”
The woman known to the world as Mata Hari, turned and glided her way out of the bar. The eyes of every man in the room followed her.
This story is a tribute to His Last Bow.Once again, at the outbreak of the Great war, Sherlock homes must engage in dangerous espionage. He will be assisted by the most glamorous and tragic of spies, Mata Hari.

Dear fellow lovers of historical mysteries: It's elementary, my dear reader. What else, after reaching the age of joyful retirement is a refined gentleman to do with his time but write more stories about Sherlock Holmes or the fascinating world of New York City between the wars?

Craig Stephen Copland confesses that he discovered Sherlock Holmes when, some time in the muddled early 1960s he pinched his older brother's copy of the immortal stories and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked. He first visited New York City in the summer of 1963 and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked.

He is very grateful to his high school English teachers at Scarlet Heights Collegiate Institute in Toronto who inculcated in him a love of literature and writing, and even inspired him to be an English major at the University of Toronto. There he was blessed to sit at the feet of both Northrup Frye and Marshall McLuhan, and other great literary professors, who led him to believe that he was called to be a high school English teacher.

It was his good fortune to come to his pecuniary senses, abandon that goal and pursue a varied professional career that took him to over one hundred countries and endless adventures. He considers himself to have been and to continue to be one of the luckiest men on God's good earth.

A few years back he took a step in the direction of Sherlockian studies and joined the Sherlock Holmes Society of Canada--also known as the Toronto Bootmakers. In May of 2014, this esteemed group of scholars announced a contest for the writing of a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although he had never tried his hand at fiction before, Craig entered and was pleasantly surprised to be selected as one of the winners. Having enjoyed the experience he decided to write more of the same and went on a mission to write a new Sherlock Holmes mystery novel that was related to and inspired by each of the sixty stories in the original Canon.

Having competed that task—sixty short novels and twenty short stories—in the autumn of2023, he set out on a new quest. He is currently writing a series of mystery/thriller books set in New York City during the era between World Wars One and Two. Each story takes place in a subsequent year. The series began in 1920 and will end in 1941.

While writing these stories, he and his fabulous wife have been living in Toronto, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, New York, Bahrain, Kuala Lumpur and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. They might settle down when he turns ninety. Or not.

I always enjoy Craig Copland's take on the Holmes canon. This is set right at the beginning of WW1. I learned a lot about Mata Hari and even did some research on her. I love when a book gets me to do further research.

This is my favorite. The part where S.H. meets the little Belgium is great despite, in later years he disparaged his investigative methods in favor of his " little grey cells " !

Great stories about Holmes and Watson. Great research by the author. Highly recommended
One of the best authors currently doing Holmes stories

The motorcycle Lord was interesting. Otherwise I will stay with my cozy mysteries. If I wanted horrible happenings could watch the Nightly News!

It is Craig Stephen Copeland’s intention to write “a tribute to each of the original stories in The Canon.” This one picks up immediately after “His Last Bow,” carrying Holmes and Watson through the early weeks of World War I. Conscripted to continue his espionage work against the Kaiser, the great (but avowedly asexual) detective enlists a most unlikely ally: Mata Hari, Europe’s notorious erotic dancer, courtesan, and—now—budding spy. Despite his book’s lighthearted tone, Copeland poignantly depicts the fading beauty’s courage as the world that has supported her in luxury collapses into madness. When Holmes upbraids Mata Hari’s “shameless opportunism” in working for both sides, she asks how else “a woman of my age who is alone in the world [is] to survive and prosper whilst all those honorable men . . . send much younger men to be slaughtered.” “If I perish,” she insists, “I perish.” Happily, neither Mata Hari nor Our Heroes perish here. Instead, they concoct a convoluted plot to steal the latest version of the Schlieffen Plan and save the Allied armies from destruction. Various figures from history and literature appear along the way, including Winston Churchill, Holmes’ old foe Hugo Oberstein, and a diminutive refugee from Belgium. Although Copeland admits to making a few things up “in order to complete the story,” the historical record is largely left intact. His plot developments are not implausible, and the novel (told in breezy third-person rather than by Watson) is a delight to read throughout. Fans of military history, Sherlock Holmes, and even Casablanca (yes, the movie!) will find a great deal to enjoy.

Sherlock Holmes is ask to spy on Germany before WWI. He and Dr. Watson are successful in their spying.

I would recommend this series and author to fans of Sherlock Holmes and readers of British mystery novels 🎉🤗. 2024 😉😮

The continues to bring Sherlock and Watson to life in these new adventures. I found this one to be quite thrilling. It's got spies, intrigue, and the famed Mata Hari. Not to spoil it but a certain Belgian detective and his little gray cells makes an appearance as well. A wonderful look into Europe in the early years of WW1.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

Not a good effort. Holmes and Watson weren't used well. neither was Mata Hari. Too much toing-and-froing via rail in war zones! A lot of typos and poor grammar. The idea was good but it was poorly done.

At the end of a previous Sherlock Holmes book written by Craig it states if you wish to be considered as a character in one of his books to contact him which I did and I am thrilled he used my name for one of the characters. It is also yet another great book of the Sherlock Holmes adventures

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasic Novel where Sherlock shares the spotlight with Mata Hari
Reviewed in Canada on October 31, 2021
Another fantastic novel continuing the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. This one has WW1 in it, and Sherlock being older.

The Acknowledgement gives us a brief history of Mata Hari, and the author's enthusiasm shines through that I would advise everyone to read it.

The novel isn't so much a mystery, but more of an spy adventure, as gambits pile upon gambits, and is set before the beginning of WW1. It is interesting to see Sherlock Holmes and Watson react to this global event. The book is full of humor and wit, similar to the previous works of this author.

The only sticking point is that Sherlock Holmes and Watson share the driver's seat with Mata Hari. If you come into this book expecting that, than I think you will enjoy it!
