About the Author

Once upon a time Craig Stephen Copland was an English major and studied under both Northrop Frye and Marshall McLuhan at the University of Toronto way back in the 1960's. He never got over his spiritual attraction to great literature and captivating stories. Somewhere in the decades since he became a Sherlockian. He is a recent member of the Bootmakers of Toronto (www.torontobootmakers.com), and mildly addicted to the sacred canon. In real life he writes about and serves as a consultant for political campaigns in Canada and the USA (www.ConservativeGrowth.net), but would abandon that pursuit if he could possibly earn a decent living writing about Sherlock Holmes.

This is the third book I've the read by Craig Stephen Copeland. In short, it is a stunner. Mr Copeland, in my view, ranks with the very best creators of Holmes/Watson pastiches. Placing Holmes and within actual historical contexts can be a tricky task and some writers fall down pretty badly when they try. A story where Holmes and Watson are intent on a case and, say, Abraham Lincoln strolls by includes historical elements but whether they contribute to the actual story is something else.

In this book Mr Copeland has set Holmes and Watson in the midst of environments that are historically accurate. Most who have studied a little history are familiar with Tammany Hall but a story like this brings out the horrors and corruption existing at the time. Also, this is a first-rate story. Save it for a Friday evening when you have nothing scheduled the next day. Mr Copeland exhibits an especially deft touch with his characters and you, the reader, soon realize that so-called minor or supporting characters are anything but. In short, this is a magnificent outing and i highly recommend his other works although I did come down rather hard on 'A Scandal in Fordlandia.'

Mr Copeland is now on my list of writers whose offerings go into my shopping cart sight unseen. Keep them coming Mr Copeland although the English teacher in me (36 years in public schools) would admonish your getting an elderly dictionary and verifying that 'Waived' and 'Waved' have different meanings.

Craig Stephen Copland is a man with a mission –to write 60 new Sherlock Holmes stories. He’s well on his way. Two of them take Holmes and Dr. John Watson well away from England – to the United States and Japan.

In The Hudson Valley Mystery, Holmes and Dr. Watson (ably assisted by Mrs. Watson) travel to New York to investigate what appears to be an open-and-shut case. Charles McCarthy, who had made a considerable fortune in the California Gold Rush, has been murdered, and his nineteen-year-old son James has confessed, pled insanity, and is now confined in a prison for the criminally insane. The widow (and mother) has retained Holmes, not believing that her son could have committed the deed.

Involved are the nearby neighbor and Gold Rush partner John Turner and his daughter, and Holmes and Watson soon learn that few of the people in both families are telling the truth. Something is being hidden, and Holmes is determined to discover what it is.

Copland is a longtime fan of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. After he retired, he set himself a goal of writing a new Sherlock Holmes mystery related to and inspired by each of the 60 stories published by Conan Doyle. He’s also written monographs on Holmes and two non-Holmes mystery stories featuring a detective in the Old American West, the Reverend Ezekiel Black. He currently lives and writes in Toronto, Buenos Aires, New York, and the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia.

The story is great fun, but readers should not expect an exact reproduction of Holmes and Watson. Copland’s Holmes make mistakes, and he often has to directed on to a better path by Watson and his wife. That said, it makes for a more realistic detective, one that is still paying homage to the original stories.

I loved this book, not only for the brilliance of Holmes and Watson, but that the author uplifted women’s contributions as well. Recognizing Mrs. Watson, Patience Moran (the servant girl), and the victims wife in such a way, was probably my favorite parts of the book. They were not just wallflowers and eye candy, but real players of the game. Bravo for writing such a good story with a great plot and lots of extremely interesting characters and places. Truly a wonderful book!

Mr. Copland writes his novels in a very similar to Dickens style. I can see he desires to put the settings, manner of speech, clothing, etc., in an appropriate tribute to Dickens. I enjoyed this story very much and am ready to dive into the next book in Copland’s Sherlock collection. Read the book! :)

I like the Holmes characterization but the story was so so.

Craig Stephen Copland takes "The Boscombe Valley Mystery," "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," "A Study in Scarlet," and contemporary history, blends them expertly, and serves up a story both reminiscent of, and totally different from, all four.

I’ve always loved Sherlock Holmes. I recently came across this series by pure chance, and I have found it to be quite entertaining. This particular book is definitely one of my favorites. While there are some spelling and grammatical errors in some of the stories that can be a little jarring to the flow of the plot at times, they are still fun to read. This book kept me up until well past 2 am, laughing out loud when I really should have been sleeping. I love how Mr. Copland is writing companion pieces to the beloved tales from the canon, and I LOVE that they are all available relatively free through kindle unlimited. I highly recommend this adaptation of the greatest consulting detective ever.

Mr. Copland has given us another wonderful Sherlock Holmes book. It follows Sir Doyle's Idea of the great detective. He writes books so fascinating that you cannot put them down.

All right if a little political. Nice tie in to the Washington Irving story.

This book is worthy of Sherlock Holmes original. There are tragedy in the book, but there are also a little of humour as well.
