Dear fellow lovers of historical mysteries: It's elementary, my dear reader. What else, after reaching the age of joyful retirement is a refined gentleman to do with his time but write more stories about Sherlock Holmes or the fascinating world of New York City between the wars?
Craig Stephen Copland confesses that he discovered Sherlock Holmes when, some time in the muddled early 1960s he pinched his older brother's copy of the immortal stories and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked. He first visited New York City in the summer of 1963 and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked.
He is very grateful to his high school English teachers at Scarlet Heights Collegiate Institute in Toronto who inculcated in him a love of literature and writing, and even inspired him to be an English major at the University of Toronto. There he was blessed to sit at the feet of both Northrup Frye and Marshall McLuhan, and other great literary professors, who led him to believe that he was called to be a high school English teacher.
It was his good fortune to come to his pecuniary senses, abandon that goal and pursue a varied professional career that took him to over one hundred countries and endless adventures. He considers himself to have been and to continue to be one of the luckiest men on God's good earth.
A few years back he took a step in the direction of Sherlockian studies and joined the Sherlock Holmes Society of Canada--also known as the Toronto Bootmakers. In May of 2014, this esteemed group of scholars announced a contest for the writing of a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although he had never tried his hand at fiction before, Craig entered and was pleasantly surprised to be selected as one of the winners. Having enjoyed the experience he decided to write more of the same and went on a mission to write a new Sherlock Holmes mystery novel that was related to and inspired by each of the sixty stories in the original Canon.
Having competed that task—sixty short novels and twenty short stories—in the autumn of2023, he set out on a new quest. He is currently writing a series of mystery/thriller books set in New York City during the era between World Wars One and Two. Each story takes place in a subsequent year. The series began in 1920 and will end in 1941.
While writing these stories, he and his fabulous wife have been living in Toronto, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, New York, Bahrain, Kuala Lumpur and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. They might settle down when he turns ninety. Or not.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is the third book I've the read by Craig Stephen Copeland. In short, it is a stunner. Mr Copeland, in my view, ranks with the very best creators of Holmes/Watson pastiches. Placing Holmes and within actual historical contexts can be a tricky task and some writers fall down pretty badly when they try. A story where Holmes and Watson are intent on a case and, say, Abraham Lincoln strolls by includes historical elements but whether they contribute to the actual story is something else.
In this book Mr Copeland has set Holmes and Watson in the midst of environments that are historically accurate. Most who have studied a little history are familiar with Tammany Hall but a story like this brings out the horrors and corruption existing at the time. Also, this is a first-rate story. Save it for a Friday evening when you have nothing scheduled the next day. Mr Copeland exhibits an especially deft touch with his characters and you, the reader, soon realize that so-called minor or supporting characters are anything but. In short, this is a magnificent outing and i highly recommend his other works although I did come down rather hard on 'A Scandal in Fordlandia.'
Mr Copeland is now on my list of writers whose offerings go into my shopping cart sight unseen. Keep them coming Mr Copeland although the English teacher in me (36 years in public schools) would admonish your getting an elderly dictionary and verifying that 'Waived' and 'Waved' have different meanings.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCraig Stephen Copland is a man with a mission –to write 60 new Sherlock Holmes stories. He’s well on his way. Two of them take Holmes and Dr. John Watson well away from England – to the United States and Japan.
In The Hudson Valley Mystery, Holmes and Dr. Watson (ably assisted by Mrs. Watson) travel to New York to investigate what appears to be an open-and-shut case. Charles McCarthy, who had made a considerable fortune in the California Gold Rush, has been murdered, and his nineteen-year-old son James has confessed, pled insanity, and is now confined in a prison for the criminally insane. The widow (and mother) has retained Holmes, not believing that her son could have committed the deed.
Involved are the nearby neighbor and Gold Rush partner John Turner and his daughter, and Holmes and Watson soon learn that few of the people in both families are telling the truth. Something is being hidden, and Holmes is determined to discover what it is.
Copland is a longtime fan of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. After he retired, he set himself a goal of writing a new Sherlock Holmes mystery related to and inspired by each of the 60 stories published by Conan Doyle. He’s also written monographs on Holmes and two non-Holmes mystery stories featuring a detective in the Old American West, the Reverend Ezekiel Black. He currently lives and writes in Toronto, Buenos Aires, New York, and the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia.
The story is great fun, but readers should not expect an exact reproduction of Holmes and Watson. Copland’s Holmes make mistakes, and he often has to directed on to a better path by Watson and his wife. That said, it makes for a more realistic detective, one that is still paying homage to the original stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book, not only for the brilliance of Holmes and Watson, but that the author uplifted women’s contributions as well. Recognizing Mrs. Watson, Patience Moran (the servant girl), and the victims wife in such a way, was probably my favorite parts of the book. They were not just wallflowers and eye candy, but real players of the game. Bravo for writing such a good story with a great plot and lots of extremely interesting characters and places. Truly a wonderful book!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMr. Copland writes his novels in a very similar to Dickens style. I can see he desires to put the settings, manner of speech, clothing, etc., in an appropriate tribute to Dickens. I enjoyed this story very much and am ready to dive into the next book in Copland’s Sherlock collection. Read the book! :)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2020Format: KindleI like the Holmes characterization but the story was so so.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2017Craig Stephen Copland takes "The Boscombe Valley Mystery," "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," "A Study in Scarlet," and contemporary history, blends them expertly, and serves up a story both reminiscent of, and totally different from, all four.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’ve always loved Sherlock Holmes. I recently came across this series by pure chance, and I have found it to be quite entertaining. This particular book is definitely one of my favorites. While there are some spelling and grammatical errors in some of the stories that can be a little jarring to the flow of the plot at times, they are still fun to read. This book kept me up until well past 2 am, laughing out loud when I really should have been sleeping. I love how Mr. Copland is writing companion pieces to the beloved tales from the canon, and I LOVE that they are all available relatively free through kindle unlimited. I highly recommend this adaptation of the greatest consulting detective ever.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2015Mr. Copland has given us another wonderful Sherlock Holmes book. It follows Sir Doyle's Idea of the great detective. He writes books so fascinating that you cannot put them down.

All right if a little political. Nice tie in to the Washington Irving story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A mystery worthy of Sherlock Holmes original!
This book is worthy of Sherlock Holmes original. There are tragedy in the book, but there are also a little of humour as well.
