About the author

Dear fellow lovers of historical mysteries: It's elementary, my dear reader. What else, after reaching the age of joyful retirement is a refined gentleman to do with his time but write more stories about Sherlock Holmes or the fascinating world of New York City between the wars?
Craig Stephen Copland confesses that he discovered Sherlock Holmes when, some time in the muddled early 1960s he pinched his older brother's copy of the immortal stories and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked. He first visited New York City in the summer of 1963 and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked.
He is very grateful to his high school English teachers at Scarlet Heights Collegiate Institute in Toronto who inculcated in him a love of literature and writing, and even inspired him to be an English major at the University of Toronto. There he was blessed to sit at the feet of both Northrup Frye and Marshall McLuhan, and other great literary professors, who led him to believe that he was called to be a high school English teacher.
It was his good fortune to come to his pecuniary senses, abandon that goal and pursue a varied professional career that took him to over one hundred countries and endless adventures. He considers himself to have been and to continue to be one of the luckiest men on God's good earth.
A few years back he took a step in the direction of Sherlockian studies and joined the Sherlock Holmes Society of Canada--also known as the Toronto Bootmakers. In May of 2014, this esteemed group of scholars announced a contest for the writing of a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although he had never tried his hand at fiction before, Craig entered and was pleasantly surprised to be selected as one of the winners. Having enjoyed the experience he decided to write more of the same and went on a mission to write a new Sherlock Holmes mystery novel that was related to and inspired by each of the sixty stories in the original Canon.
Having competed that task—sixty short novels and twenty short stories—in the autumn of2023, he set out on a new quest. He is currently writing a series of mystery/thriller books set in New York City during the era between World Wars One and Two. Each story takes place in a subsequent year. The series began in 1920 and will end in 1941.
While writing these stories, he and his fabulous wife have been living in Toronto, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, New York, Bahrain, Kuala Lumpur and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. They might settle down when he turns ninety. Or not.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love mystery stories, and I've always loved Sherlock Holmes. When I learned of this collection of new Sherlock Holmes stories I jumped at the opportunity.
This a collection of forty novellas. I binge read the entire collection, but you can read them in smaller increments. Each novella is a self-contained story and complete unto itself.
One of the things that is a little disconcerting is that the time frame of the stories jumps around a little, from the late 1880s to the early 1900s, and they are not sequential. The time of each is well established in the text, but I'm not sure why the author chose to do it that way. It does not detract from the quality of each of the stories, which as stated previously are self-contained.
Craig Stephen Copland has purposely woven elements of the Holmes original Conan Doyle stories into the plotlines of his work. He knows the body of Conan Doyle's work well, and it shows. Copland is also a master at dialog, and he was able to place the reader right in the middle of the conversations. Well done.
Something else that I breezed past without distraction is pretty sloppy editing. There's quite a lot of obviously wrong words and some garbled sentences, as if the author started with one thought, changed tact to go another direction, and didn't completely correct the sentence.
I still give the collection Five Stars. I'm glad I read the stories, and I'll look for more by Mr. Copland. Well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseForty will written Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson stories by Craig Stephen Copland. Each story is different with interesting well developed characters lots of action and misdirection leading to each conclusion. I listened 🎶 to these individually. As a Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson fan I would highly recommend this series and author to fans of Sherlock Holmes and readers of mystery novels 👍🔰. 2023 😀👒☺👑
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCopeland really came through with multiple stories of the adventures of homes and Watson. Love the way he articulated all his stories, kept you in suspense, and delivered a great ending each time.
Just a sidenote Mr. Copeland, fire your proof reader. I found myself rereading multiple lines and sentences only to come out with grammatical errors and multiple word copies that totally pissed me off.
Other than that, I look forward to your next series of novels
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSorry, I couldn't resist. Having read the entire Canon by Sir Arthur, some of them more than once, having read several biographies of Sir Arthur, and having studied under Owen Dudley Edward's at the University of Edinburgh, I longed for more adventures with Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson. Mr. Copland provides wonderful stories that pick up threads that Sir Arthur left behind. Well written, imaginative, historically detailed, and well told, these stories are fun to read. I am looking forward to reading the new stories that he has added to his collection. The game is truly afoot!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have been a fan of all things (well, most things) Holmes since I read the first adventure some 55 or so years ago. The first story was in a book requiring side notes to explain what some of the British terms meant in American. And that was my start of my love for reading and of Holmes & Watson in particular. And this author and his collection of tales have been a joy to consume! I highly recommend this book to everyone, Baker Street irregular or not!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI bought this novel for my Kindle so I could read whenever I had the chance. It turned out that I made the chance to read this book without putting the Kindle down hardly ever. The writer, Craig Steven Copland made you feel as if you were part of the story with Dr. John Watson. There were 36 novellas in the book and every story was written to make you feel part of it. The writer is every bit as good as Sir Arthur Canon Doyle. A must read book for Sherlock 'olmes lovers.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2025Format: KindleStory plots are okay, but lacking is the special observation and deduction that he is known for.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe stories were exciting and helped me with hours of enjoyment through this trying time. Mr. Copland is one of the best of the Sherlock Holmes story tellers. I am looking forward to more novels and adventures.
The only compliant I have is the large number of grammatical errors throughout the entire collection. Some of the errors were minor but I felt others were obvious and should have been edited before print.
Thank you Mr. Copland and of course Holmes and Watson.

1.0 out of 5 stars Some jarring errors
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseOn the whole, pretty much as I expected, but a few jarring things. Without giving too much away : page 33 : Watson addresses Mrs. Hudson as 'Mrs. Watson'. Page 55 Mycroft's rudeness to Watson out of character; throughout the stories, Lestrade addresses Holmes by surname alone, without the 'Mr.' There are several references to the Fall :
Dr. Watson should have written 'Autumn'. Page 235 : Holmes rudeness to the bell-boys is really sickening to read; totally out of character. The Story ' A Sandal from East Anglia' is reprinted in the 'Collection Two' book.
Pages 210-211 : Sherlock Holmes would never use such expressions : turd, flabby bottom, loo !
I'll stick with the series for a a further volume or two and see of it improves. David Marcum's books are so much better.
