In the untamed and unforgiving desert of southeastern Utah, Mitch Westland and Edie Zimmer are among the Mormon settlers determined to make their homes amid the harshest of circumstances. Threatened by Indians, competing ranchers, and cattle rustlers, the young couple must prevail against man, nature, and their own fears in order to fulfill their dream of establishing a ranch—and a family—of their own. This sequel to the bestseller Only the Brave covers the time period of 1888 to 1919 and merges the story of Mitch and Edie with the author's continuing series Fire and Steel.

In typical Lund fashion, here is good story telling. Lund makes history interesting by adding in a few fictional people to let us see it through their eyes, There are places and events that you wonder about, but not enough to really learn about them on your own. Lund did the hard work, with learning all the details, reading the diaries and journals and other records, and then he organized it into a wonderful story.

I have been to the places Lund so vividly describes. The land is rugged, harsh, desolate, yet beautiful. Lund adds the human element. He shows the hopes, dreams, struggles, accomplishments, and tragedies of real history. You laugh and you cry, but when you are done, you are satisfied.

Excellent story by one of my favorite authors - again we learn about the saints early in UT history that set up the south east corner of the state. The determination, faith and strength of these pioneers facing many problems but over came - and this last generation in the book saw great progress into the modern world. A wonderful love story.

A "Must Read", in the best Tradition of this great writer. If you want your Frontier History in a way that makes you not only empathize with these Pioneers, but makes them so real (and many of them are!), that you come to love them, and agonize with them at the Adversity that toughened them, as did the crucibles in the fires of their ancestors. Small wonder the world would join us in this land, chosen of God, to work His wonders among us.

I prefer strong female characters. The lead female character was not brave like suggested in the book 2 Title. I have autobiographies of many real pioneers who were strong and independent women.
