The Undaunted: The Miracle Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 535 ratings

The journey was impossible.
But they had no other choice.

At the call of their prophet, they left well-established farms and businesses to strike out yet again into the untamed wilderness. A small band of men, women, and children formed the 1879 pioneer company.

Their mission: stand as a buffer between lawlessness and civilization.
Their road: only what they created themselves, blasting out a perilous trail over slick rock and through desolate cliffs.
Their hearts: UNDAUNTED

Excrutiating, Compelling, Inspiring, August 14, 2009
By Adam

I may be a bit biased. I am a great great grandson of Platte D Lyman, who was one of the leaders of the San Juan Mission, and a great grandson of Hanson Bayles, who was a member of the first expedition, and Evelyn Lyman, who traveled the Hole in the Rock road in late 1880. I knew the story before I read the book, but upon hearing that Brother Lund's book had been published I couldn't keep myself from picking up a copy... couldn't keep myself from devouring it either. Anyone who has read Gerald Lund's other work will know his style. He fits fictional characters into the narrative of history in a particularly effective way and The Undaunted is no exception to that formula. In this story, however, he also sets out to correct the sentiment of many historians and others familiar with the San Juan Mission who consider it to have been a failure at worst and a mistake at best. In truth, the Hole in the Rock pioneers were called of God to establish new settlements in an untamed, dangerous and lawless area. They accepted that call for what it was and clawed and fought their way through to magnify it. Though the Four Corners area has not blossomed into a major population center in the intervening 130 years the saints have remained firmly and fiercely entrenched. They now even have a temple to show for their dedication, tenacity and faith. Beyond even that, those few hundred courageous pioneers have inspired thousands upon thousands of descendants and admirers to face their own treacherous trails through life. Now Brother Lund has made their story available in a more personal way than ever before and I hope that it will be able to touch many, many thousands more.

I know individuals who are descendants of some of the people in this book who settled Southeastern Utah. From the individual histories that I have read, I believe this book to be a pretty accurate account, although in the format of historical fiction. The fiction is well defined, as is the historical aspect. It was hard for me to put the book down whenever I picked it up. Thank you to Gerald Lund for his excellent research and description of the events that were true. It made me appreciate more than ever the huge sacrifice these pioneers made in order to settle this part of the state of Utah.

I got this for a pre trek hike trail of faith award, and when it arrived I was a little nervous I would finish the 800 pages before the trek in 2 months I had. But this book is so well written, just like most books by Gerald N. Lund, that I finished it in 2 weeks! I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in pioneering experiences. He does such a great job weaving the historical aspect as well as his fictional characters. MUST READ!!

I have loved all of Lund's books. He has brought many of historical facts to light through fictional means. This has given me great pleasure in reading. Especially not wanting to read something that gives me other than increasing my faith.

This 800 page book looked very intimidating at first, but since it was our book group's choice for the month I felt obligated to read it. (We have learned to give ourselves at least 3 months to read a book this size.) Once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. We had just finished "How Green Was My Valley" about a coal mining family in Wales, so this was a natural progression because it began with a coal mining family in England. At some point the family sails for America and ends up in Utah. While telling the story of an impossible move into the wilds of the West, the author sweetens the story with romance. Don't be afraid by the size of the book. It is an easy, enjoyable read.

I love to read about the Mormon Pioneers. The Pioneers had amazing faith. When I think about these faithful men and women I think of all they went through all that they had to do to get to their destination. In today's Times we have vehicles to get to ware we want or need to be, they didn't they had to walk they had to build wagons strong enough to get through the rough Terrain, we have rodes to drive on. The Mormon Pioneer's had the most amazing faith, we go through trials in our lives and when we do think about the Pioneers and their faith and pray and read the scriptures so you can too have the faith that they had and those trials in your lives can make it a little bit easier to get through.

Love the way the author makes you see life the way the characters in his stories see it. And love the way he makes you feel that you want to know those characters....and how you come to feel like you are friends with them. Appreciate the author's research about the events and locations in his stories. There is a second book about this part of the country - although this one and the other one are stand-alones. This first one is pretty long - so having a few year's break in the story (when you go to the second book) helps somewhat.

It started with The Work and Glory series. Then there was The Kingdom and The Crown series. I've read both series multiple times. I anxiously waited for the release of The Undaunted. I pre-reserved a copy on Amazon.com. When it arrived I started reading it the same day. I found I had to pace myself because I didn't want to read it to fast. I enjoyed the extensive use of references at the end of each chapter. This is an excellent book that does a good job of bringing to life the experiences of the Hole In The Rock pioneers who settled the wild San Juan valley in Southeastern Utah.

This book is quite long on first appearance, but I can tell you it was well worth the read. It's one of those books you just can't put down because you are so curious about what is going to happen next. I loved reading about the immigrant experience in our early US history that eventually lead to becoming a pioneer in the rugged west. Like the characters of this historical fiction novel, I would have never imagined that they would end up where they did from destitute coal mine workers in England to where they ended up... As I would think many of our great country's immigrant founders did.
