A Scholarly Pursuit: A Traditional Regency Romance (The Ellsworth Assortment) Paperback – September 11, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
He’s paid to make promises he’ll never keep. She dreads nothing so much as empty words. But when he’s hired to win her for another, will feigned fondness become literal love?
Tyrone Ellsworth’s career as a literary lover-in-lieu began at university, where he found amusement and steady spending-silver in writing poetry, love letters and offers of marriage for fellow Oxonians. So when schoolmate Gareth Boulton purchases his pen to win the wealthy Miss Agatha Weeks, what could be the harm? The task will be all the easier, in fact, because Tyrone has known her for years as his sister’s dearest friend.
Miss Agatha Weeks has never felt for any young man what she felt for the one who broke her heart years earlier. And while she doesn’t pine for him any longer, she has begun to doubt there are any worthy, honest young men left. But then suddenly there are two! Mr. Gareth Boulton, whom she dismissed earlier as a callow fortune hunter, reveals new depths in his pursuit of her. And Tyrone Ellsworth—thoughtful, kind, comfortable through long acquaintance—if Tyrone cannot be trusted, no one can.
Murder will out, however, and so will mendacity. Can the deceiver escape the consequences of his own deception, or will the girl he deceived be lost to him forever?

About the author

When a Charles Dickens Final Jeopardy question saved her from total humiliation on the game show, Christina Dudley decided her degrees in English Literature and lifelong reading obsession might actually come in useful, and she sat down to write her first novel.
Now, twenty books later, she is the author of three series of sparkling Regency romances and the contemporary Jane Austen adaptation PRIDE AND PRESTON LIN (Third State Books, March 2024), which was named to the 2024 Best Romance lists for Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, and Library Journal.
Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area on a diet of classics and Regency romance, her tastes have grown to include sci-fi with robots, survival epics, and doorstop-sized histories, but love stories will always be her favorite.
She and her family live in Bellevue, Washington.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2023Christina Dudley’s books are all beautifully, impeccably written. Her characters always engage me from the first few paragraphs, and behave like rational, reasonable, lovable humans. The romance is always convincing, with plenty of authentic chemistry, without any need for explicit sex scenes. The dialogue flows and all the books are filled with subtle humor that adds to the story. I only know of a few current-day authors with standards this high, and often seek out authors from decades ago whose books are being re-released, because frankly, authors were better educated and had to be better writers (pre-1980s or so) to get published. Christina Dudley is on my very short list of modern writers (maybe 5 at the most) who can hold their own with Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen. Her books are an automatic pre-order for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2023My only problem was that the ending was a bit abrupt. The rest of the story was lovely and fun. I laughed out loud several times. I always marvel at the wonderful quotes from oft archaic sources Ms. Dudley uses at the beginning of each chapter.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2023This book was an absolute pleasure to read, I utterly devoured it in one day!
After falling in love with Aggie and Tyrone in the previous books I was very eager for them to get their own story and it did not disappoint! I think Ms. Dudley's books get better and better but this one is superb.
I loved the pacing of the book,it was perfect, not too fast and not too slow.
The romance was slow burn and utterly delightful, I was so happy for Aggie to have a happy ending.
Highly recommend and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2024I was of mixed emotions about this book. First of all, this series is about the Ellsworth assortment, and yet, as soon as one person gets married off, she disappears into the woodwork, and is practically never heard from again. Even Minta, Aggie’s, very best friend, Is really not a part of the story at all. Where are the other sisters? How are their lives playing out? We don’t even hardly get a glimpse of Bea as she grows up. I got very tired of all the conversations about Aggie‘s misery over Taplin, and eventually skipped to the end of the book to finally get some action. And behold, there was the end of the book, Stark, sudden, totally unsatisfying. I really like the characters in these books, but wish the Ellsworth family featured more prominently in all of them. Maybe I should’ve given this a four star, but probably not.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2024Christina Dudley is a delightful new discovery for me. I love her style, and I really love her characters. The Ellsworth Assortment is a treasure trove of interesting, unique, charming people in a family that will win your heart and keep you up at night to see what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2024Tyrone has been such an uninvolved character in this series that I had to read his story. He is still self absorbed and satisfied with his life of perpetual college life, then things change.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2023Once I discovered Christina Dudley's books I never looked back, my new favorite author. Her writing is so absorbing and her characters and stories so unique and entertaining, I've enjoyed every minute. Tyrone's story is no different, couldn't put it down. I've read all the Hapgood collection and only have Miranda's story left in this one. I'll be sad when it's over!
(I personally don't like long reviews that basically tell the story, I want to discover it for myself)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2024I had originally skipped this story, as I don’t care for misunderstandings…and this seemed like the genre trope ad nauseam. In the end however, it was not quite as bad as I had worried. Both Aggie and Tyrone are sweet and likable. The misunderstandings are more with others than the two themselves. I sympathized with Aggie concerning everyone’s obsession with Mr Taplin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty and Wonderful
It was brilliant reacquainting myself with the Ellsworths. This story has some truly hilarious moments whilst still providing a heartwarming romance. Great characters, excellent story, and definitely well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, feel-good Regency
I stumbled across one of Christina Dudley's books on Kindle Unlimited earlier this year, promptly worked my way through all her Regency books and spent the past five or so months impatiently waiting for this one to come out. She is one of few authors who can make me actually laugh out loud while reading as her dry wit is vastly entertaining and her characters endearingly flawed.
Also, I gotta say as a person who normally finds epigraphs superfluous, she's very good at picking the right ones. Her books keep getting better and I look forward to reading the next one in The Ellsworth Assortment (hoping we'll get to see more of Bea as well!)
