- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2024Well, let me tell you, Sacrificial Waters by A.D. Jones is not for the faint of heart! When these poor souls, a group of urban explorers, stumble upon a cave with a mysterious grotto, things take a dark turn real quick. What started as a thrilling adventure quickly turned into a battle for survival when an ancient evil was unleashed. The way that supernatural force tormented them was downright chilling! Now, I must say, the friendships that grew out of this dire situation were a heartwarming touch, but Lord have mercy, the terror these folks endured! The villain in this book is as wicked as the day is long, and the story just keeps you hanging on. It’s the kind of book that’ll make you think twice before going spelunking anytime soon. If you like a little grit and gore with your supernatural thrillers, I’d highly recommend this one, y’all!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2024If you love urban exploration, Sacrificial Waters by A.D. Jones will make you think twice before venturing into any dark caves! This fast-paced horror story pulls you right in as a group of explorers accidentally releases an ancient evil. Things go from bad to worse as they try to escape, and the villain is relentless. I especially enjoyed how the tension built as their bond strengthened, which made the story even more engaging. It’s got all the makings of a perfect supernatural horror movie—plenty of gore, spine-tingling twists, and a villain with some serious power. Even though some parts were a little predictable, I couldn’t stop reading! If you’re a fan of urban legends and supernatural horror, this one’s a must-read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2024A really nice take on supernatural horror. Despite their large number, the characters in this book successfully made an impression and evoked sympathy by giving us a glimpse into their emotional state. The villain was incredibly well-crafted for an otherworldly being, and its terrifying presence was always looming. This story will keep you on edge with its tense plot, numerous twists, terrifying moments, and gory scenes.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2024If you love urban exploring, you may change your mind after reading this book. This group of explorers had very little in common except exploring. They found this amazing cave that seemed like a dream come true. Not really urban exploring but they decided to give the cave a go. There were not many red flags as they continued to get closer to the cave. Some were just hoping to find a lost spirit and have video footage of the experience. Little did they know they were in for a mind blowing experience. How awful it must have been to find out that an ancient entity was released by one’s actions. Then to only have matters become worse when the team discovers they cannot get rid of the entity. Thus problems occur when they realize they are up against something as old as time. This group of people showed just how brave one must be to face an evil entity meanwhile experiencing terrible, horrific actions presented by the entity. This book was beyond thrilling, terrifying and disturbingly gore filled. 👻👻👻👻👻 recommendation!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2024Say you are in a group of urban explorers and happen to find a trail that leads to a cave. In that cave there is a grotto. Several of you decide to jump into the water. This turns into a mess around and find out situation with a supernatural twist. Come for the exploration and stay for the grisly part of finding out in this fast paced story.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2024When a group of urban explorers normally on the search for all manner of supernatural, murderous, or otherwise spooky locations wander outside of the city, they stumble upon an ancient evil that begins hunting them down one by one.
Sacrificial Waters by A.D Jones (@the_evergrowing_library) feels like a book just begging to be made into an over the top supernatural horror movie. As the story progresses the remaining friends develop a closer bond in their attempts to survive which gives you more buy-in to the cast.
The evil pursuing them has a long reach and a lot of tricks up her sleeve. The way her appearances are woven throughout the story was my favorite part of the book and is one of the biggest arguments for a film adaptation.
This is a fast pace romp that feels nostalgic and modern at the same time, and I'm excited to read more from Jones 🤘
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2024Loved the characters and the story. Some parts were really gross and I mean that in a good way.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2024I had a blast reading this! Who doesn’t love a malicious evil witch relentlessly pursuing their prey?
We quickly get to know each character from multiple POVs, each different from one another with their own personality traits and their love for urban exploration is what brought this unique group together. It’s not until after the group of friends find a hidden cave and swim inside it’s pool that spooky things start happening. From possession to Living Dead Dolls coming to life, Tree Monsters and malevolent Vines, the characters are subject to unbelievable tortures and brutal deaths! It gave me b-movie vibes and I mean that in the best way possible. The gore is inventive and over the top with some gross out moments that felt Sam Raimi-esque, especially during the final act. It was suspenseful and action-packed, I devoured those moments and really enjoyed how it all played out. The only reason why it’s not a full five star is because sometimes the group of friends made too light of certain situations that felt unrealistic. But this still took me on a wild ride and I enjoyed it for what it was.
Overall, I had fun reading this and recommend it to fans of Occult Horror that features as many laughs as it does scary moments. I would even label this as a Horror comedy as it’s kinda gross, a bit silly and entirely entertaining! I will be keeping this author on my radar and will think twice before swimming in a caves pool hidden away in the side of a mountain…

5.0 out of 5 stars Supernatural modern horror at its finest
Jones’ work has become a firm favourite with me in the last few months. Loved his most recent novella Born of Bloodshed and now Sacrificial Waters is another 5 star read for me.
It’s the summer of 2022 and a group of urban explorers decide to explore a hidden cave located in the middle of a forest in the Peak District. Finding a hidden grotto, they decide to cool off and relax. What they don’t realise is that they’ve stepped into the lair of a malevolent force who will stop at nothing to end them.
One of the things I love about Andy’s work is the way he writes his characters. They’re multi-dimensional; the banter between the group is brilliant, their interactions genuine and bloody hilarious. Having to stick together to figure out what the hell is trying to kill them off brings out the best (and worst) in them. They’re all likeable and relatable characters and you end up completely invested in their survival.
Andy gets the perfect balance between the supernatural elements, mystery and horror. And one thing that he excels at is giving you moments of absolute terror and gore (we won’t talk about the broken car glass). There’s plenty of jump scares and shock revelations too to wet the reader’s appetite. The tension builds subtly throughout the story and there’s an insidious creepiness throughout. And when you meet the malevolent force, you will understand exactly what I mean.
It’s fast-paced, well constructed and the nod to classic horror tropes and films makes it feel special for the readers. It’s a rollercoaster ride from start to finish and Jones’ delivers a truly memorable modern horror story. All the stars! Keep an eye out for Andy and his work- he’s one to watch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gore Galore!
After reading Umbrate and tasting both Andys writing style and his no holds barred way of detailing gore I instantly knew I would be begging to be an early reader for his first horror, Sacrificial Waters.
Straight off the bat all of the characters are wholly grounded, each having certain traits that had me seeing myself or someone i know within them, and subsequently I formed a level of attachment to them i hadnt been expecting.
The dynamics within the group also felt very real in terms of differing personalities and interactions, the switch in povs had me seeing and hearing multiple angles to the group and heavily lended to the instability of trust.
I did joke a little with Andy because i couldnt shake the image of those that had been murdered just lying around in their own blood whilst the others continued their demonic persuit, and while yes i know this is a horror we cant just stop for a funeral, the visualisation and intricacy of the characters had me always viewing the world as a whole and those gone were never truly forgotten by me.
And dont get me started on the witch, i had this eerie sense of being watched by her the whole time which gave me shivers, plus the GORE... oh it drew me in with disgust and sent me off with disgust and left me gasping and gagging for more horror to consume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great!
I was introduced to this author in the Twelve Months of Horror anthology. I loved his story Swap Meet and his writing style. I was thrilled when I learned he had a full length horror novel being released soon.
And it did not disappoint.
This is exactly the type of book I want to curl up with on a gloomy day. If you enjoyed Final Destination, Fallen, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Ritual, and La Llorona, you’ll enjoy this.
The author has a very concise style of writing that is impactful— both in imagery and conjuring emotions and visceral reactions. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just read it!
An early contender for book of the year for me. I read this in less than 24 hours. This book is well constructed, pacy and just brilliant.
There’s shocks, jump scares and some truly clever plot moments. The true beauty of this horror is in its subtlety- there is a tension in this book that leaves you on edge but also unable to put it down. It’s an insidious creeping kind of horror… it’s a breath down the neck, movement out of the corner of your eye when you’re home alone, what was that kind of horror. Then there’s a moment that is pure gore that tests your gag reflex.
The relationships between the group are believable and incredibly well written, each character is someone you could know, their joint connection of a passion in common brings a disparate group of people together in a way that avoids cliche and instead focuses on nuance of connection. Andy has done a great job of creating a cast of believable, multi-dimensional, layered characters who you can’t help but root for. The people are what make this so special, in a relatively short amount of time you become attached to this group- the moments of human interaction between the out and out horror helps to build the suspense and sense of unease.
Loved the nods to classic horror movies and tropes. There are some real moments of nightmare fuel.
The twists and turns of this story made it for me. It’s hard to review without spoiling- just read it ok?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense and shocking horror tale
This is the second of A.D. Jones’ books I’ve read after his awesome debut, Umbrate. While it is wildly different from his debut it still maintains the quality and shows the versatility of the author to be able to jump to different genres.
Sacrificial Waters comes with a classic horror set up of a group of friends enjoying themselves, in this case exploring abandoned urban sites, but a chance find leads to a new area to explore that has deadly consequences for the group.
The group dynamics are key in Sacrificial Waters, the group are friends but mainly due to a shared passion which means whilst they can joke around and mess with each other which felt very natural, they don’t fully know each other, this in my opinion left the potential all the way through of a shock involvement coming from within.
The characters were well written in such a short period, it was so easy to feel attached to them individually and as a group.
There were two out of nowhere shocks, obviously this is a horror and there is going to be death and terror but I was genuinely surprised by what occurred at times. The book never lets the reader get comfortable and that works really well with horror stories.
Sacrificial Waters is an awesome horror story with the right level of scares, gore and humour. It has some twists that throw you and some genuine shocks.
