Sarah's Shadow Paperback – December 6, 2017
If you could change something about yourself, would you do it?
When Sarah Simpkins is teased about her shadow in the school playground, she finds herself wishing she didn't have one. That night she has the chance to make the wish come true. But will losing her shadow really make her happy?
Nick Jones' critically acclaimed debut children's picture book deals with issues such as bullying and self-confidence from a refreshingly original angle. Illustrated beautifully by Si Clark, Sarah s Shadow taps into the young reader s imagination and leaves them with a powerful, positive message.
Jones and Clark have put together a truly lovely children's book here, reminiscent of beloved children's classics like Peter Pan. Red City Review
A book written for children by someone who obviously understands them completely and who is a cracking story-teller into the bargain. Linda's Book Bag

- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2018Sarah is tall and thin. One day at school while in the playground, Yasmin makes fun of her shadow, and the other children quickly join in the teasing. Sarah feels sad and depressed. That evening when she sees a shooting star, Sarah makes a wish. She wants her shadow to disappear forever. When that wish comes true, Sarah feels happy again. The situation changes when Sarah goes to summer camp, and the other campers are making shadow pictures on the wall. Sarah realizes that we must be careful with our wishes.
The book teaches lessons about bullying and going along with others. It shows children the value of thinking for oneself. The illustrations are expressive if a bit stylized and unusual.I would rate this book four and a half stars. Recommended especially for children in the six to nine-year-old age groups, but appropriate for any child with concerns about bullying.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2018What a great book! The book layout is engaging. The main character, Sarah, is lovely. I enjoyed the way the book's story subtly solves several issues for Sarah. The illustrations are fun. The book covers a lot of ground and includes examples of children participating in many activities like kayaking, camping, basketball, and hiking. It's really a wonderful book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2018This book illustrates a classic example of “Be Careful What You Wish For!” Sarah was a carefree girl who had a great time playing with her shadow. That was - until some other kids made fun of her for doing so. She made a wish upon a star for her shadow to be gone. That was a wish she soon came to regret.
Many times in life we find ourselves in uncomfortable situations. If only we could wish the unpleasantness away, wouldn’t things be so much better? Not always.
The lesson I learned from this book is that some things are very important to many aspects of our lives. It is better to embrace them and learn from them rather than trying to change things or wish them away.
The personality of Sarah’s Shadow was clearly revealed in the simple, clean lines of Si Clark’s artwork. I can honestly say I simply loved this little story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2020This is a story that will help readers learn to accept themselves just the way they are. Sarah demonstrates that when we don’t appreciate what we have it could be gone forever. A great read for kids and families.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2018My Pre-K students loved this story! I am teaching them about shadows and silhouettes so that we can create a shadow puppet show. This is a great introduction for this and is an extension to their unit on light. It's also great for critical thinking such as prediction and inference. I believe this book would engage students up through second grade. LOVED IT!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2018This was an interesting angle to bringing many messages in one simple book. Loving yourself, stepping out to be accepted and many more lessons are all something kids go through. This is a great book! A must read for any child going through self-acceptance issues.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2018The story had an easy message to understand, all age groups could associate with the story. Bullying might also be addressed in the story, as with loving who you are. The writing was sightly mature and wordy for the age group it appears to address. For some age groups with issues this might be a good read. The story did give a warm fuzzy feeling, because hate was not generated by a person, only situations that might naturally occur.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2018I just loved this cute book about a girl who makes a wish and then gets it! Though it may not be exactly what she truly wants. There's a nice message about self-love and the pictures that accompany this adorable book are very sweet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sure to become a family favourite
Many children (and adults) will identify with Sarah when an unkind comment about her shadow (so really about what Sarah looks like) leaves her dejected and with her confidence crushed. But when she takes the opportunity to wish her shadow away, her problems just get a whole lot worse! This original story draws you in from the start, and the illustrations are really appealing, particularly in the way that they capture the range of Sarah’s emotions. There’s an important message about being comfortable with who you are that’s subtly conveyed through the action, especially the humorous and delightfully satisfying ending. An absolutely brilliant and beautifully produced book that’s sure to become a family favourite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be careful what you wish for!
A great book which was loved by the children at my school. Sarah's shadow is a fantastic story which also has an underlying message. Older children will love reading the story themselves but younger children also enjoyed listening to it and particularly loved the superb animations. The ebook would also work well as a text to base PSHE lessons around for teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and supportive
A charming work from author and father Nick Jones. using his skills picked up as both Nick has created a tale that enchants but also informs and reassures a young reader.
The layout is large and easy to get involved with and there is beautiful artwork.
This is a topclass piece of work and lovingly constructed. A sign of more good things to come from this budding author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story about loving yourself as you are
Really loved this book, it cuts straight to the heart of kids wanting to fit in and be accepted by their friends. Sarah is bullied about her shadow being skinny like her, and wishes it away. I think most kids can relate to being picked on for being different.
However, Sarah quickly realises that she hadn’t wished it away, as they’re on a camping trip doing shadow puppets. So it comes back to her and she wows them all with her shadow animals. I think this part of it, kids like in particular.
Beautifully illustrated, at its moral centre is the message to love and accept yourself the way you are - which is a great message for children and adults alike. My 5 year old nephew really liked it, and when I asked him what to give it out of 10, the answer was 10!
