The Scars That Bind Us: The Magi Accounts 1 Kindle Edition
What kind of mage would be crazy enough to crush on a shifter? Me. Apparently me.
The world is a messed-up place. Especially for those of us who have magic, and I know just how terrible it can be firsthand. Which is one of the reasons I try to stay away from people… humans and shifters especially.
Unfortunately, the NHSO forces magi to work alongside shifters to help protect the humans from taragorians—scary beasts from another realm. Which means I’m thrown onto a new team and forced to work with Cosmo Ono-Nai, a lion shifter.
And for some reason, I can’t keep my eyes off him.
The Scars That Bind Us is a 115K word novel and the first book in the MM urban fantasy series, The Magi Accounts.

About the author

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.
She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2022The Scars That Bind Us is a stellar start to the Magi Accounts series. I was at first hesitant to read this book but I am glad I gave this chance.
The story is engaging and well-paced. I love the world that was presented in this story from the magic that exists, the paranormal species and fierce other dimensional creature that the had to fight. The brief history that was presented of the war that created the current state of their world is interesting while the sufferings and injustices that magi and shifters had to endure were pretty rage-inducing to say the least.
The cast of characters in this story so far have been endearing. I love the close bond between Madeo and Jude. They've been together practically forever and have been the pillar for each other. Theirs is platonic relationship that has a lot of skinship as both are very affectionate along with the fact that it is what makes their magic work better. Logan is such an adorable kid and what happened to him was quite sad. But it was a joy to see him grow close and find a family in Madeo and Jude. Cosmo and his pride grew on me later on in the story. At first I found a tad bit of a bore and quite one-dimensional, but they did get fleshed out a bit much later and have become quite endearing.
The romance between Cosmo and Madeo is nicely written and hopefully would have more development later in the series. I hope that Cosmo would be given the same depth of character as Madeo down the line and Jude to get his own HEA.
Overall, The Scars That Bind Us is an action-packed, paranormal story with interesting characters, a fascinating world and a compelling plot that will hook you until the end. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
This would be 4.5 stars out of 5 stars.
I received an ARC of this book via GRR and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2022I would have given this a 5 star rating, except for one thing that bugged me in reading the story:
1. The main character, Mateo, came off as WAY needy, with many pages of self dialogue and introspection. He had a crappy start to life, got it, but so did practically every other mage or shifter. I tended to skip over those pages as they were repetitive after the first 1/4 of the book.
Other than that (and it was just my opinion) this book had a fantastic storyline, great editing and fantastic, believable characters. Loved the humor!
I will definitely read the second book!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2022I am so blown away by this book! I am always looking for a great storyline, interesting magic system, and of course love interest that will keep me interested and this did not disappoint! I stayed up way too long and devoured this book before heading into the next!
The caste system between the humans, shifters, and magi in this world is appalling. I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't real. Like alot. The injustices that Mads, Jude and Logan suffered were atrocious. The Ono-Nai clan also had their own hidden scars as well, but shifters fare slightly better than magi in this system. This made it very hard for them (Mads especially) to trust the clan and Cosmo throughout the book.
The bond that Jude and Mads share is extraordinary, but not well fleshed out in how it develops other than it started when Mads was 3 days old. But they are extremely powerful together, extremely experienced fighting taragorians, but it also makes them a target for their superiors.
I did find this book to be heavy on the info dump, but first books in a series can be that way, and this did not bother me or detract from my enthusiasm in any way. Michelle does a very good job of harnessing the readers emotions exactly how she wants to, and many times I felt what Mads or Cosmo were 'feeling' or what I thought they might be feeling. A dual POV would have been cool for this book between Mads and Cosmo.
This was a great start to this series, I'm excited to lose more sleep and continue on to the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2024I was cautious about this book. The description made me think it could go either way. And when I was reading the prologue, I thought it might be full of political propaganda, which I don’t need in my recreation. But then it turned out to be really funny! And the characters were dynamic, 3D, and compelling. The plot progressed at a good pace with a riveting climax. If I try really, really hard to find a flaw with this book, then I think I spotted a typo once. But who cares? It was awesome!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2024I think this is the first book of this author that I have read and I absolutely love it. O M G the main characters so fit for each other they are perfect together. The side characters are also up there with them especially Jude. I LOVE Jude. I love his relationship with Mads. They love each other so much we can feel with every word they say and how their actions speaks for them. I can feel Mads is a very powerful magi and he will do everything to protect his family. I love Cosmo he is such an amazing alpha for Mads. Their first encounter I find it very funny. Recommend it wholeheartedly. Now to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022My first book by this author, I read this through Kindle Unlimited. Please be aware of the trigger warnings in the beginning. Past abuse, physical, emotional, and sexual are a running theme through the book. Jude and Mads have been practicing magis for twenty years. They have rescued a young magi after he was badly beaten by his shifter teammates. Teams consist of one or two mafia and a group of shifters (all shifters are felines). Mads and Jude have a new team of shifters, led by very alpha lion, Cosmo.
In all phases of life, humans rank first, shifters a very poor second, and magic are ignored or treated like dirt. The story introduces a group of people very easy to grow fond of, and care for. Well written and edited, and excellent continuity. Plenty of room to continue to story, with developing relationships and ongoing threats, but this story is complete in itself.
Looking forward to continuing to read this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope in the dark
A truly excellent start to a series with a rich world and plenty of important characters with complicated lives.
Madeo is a mage in a world that hates mages, just living as best as he can with his dyad Jude. Bit by bit we learn their history which is horrific and shows the wrongs of this world and the struggles to overcome (honestly, read the trigger warnings, there is some dark stuff in their past). But when a young mage, Logan, is in trouble, Madeo can't help but step in to take his job and change the course of his and his family's life. The new job leads him to working with the Ono-Nai pride and alpha Cosmo, which shifts things in ways he never expected.
There is a lot of darkness in this book. Humans have been horrible to shifters and mages and though things have changed a little bit they are still truly horrendous to mages. Seeing everything that has happened in this world and knowing that it honestly feels true is saddening. But despite the struggles and problems, as we get to know Madeo and Jude we see two people who still have goodness and heart to them, who look after others and try to do good even as the world doesn't look out for them. Having the pride come into this and the slow shift as the Ono-Nai's and Cosmo not only appreciate the mages but actively look after them as well shows hope. There is so much wrong but little pieces of hope and happiness poke through. This will clearly be a difficult series but the rich story and complex world promise an amazing read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and enjoyable
A great read, nicely written and well worth picking up. The story flows well, characters are likeable and interesting. Many of them have traumatic background stories but the two main ones get their happy ending in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow.
This book made me cry.
The start of the book, it was triggering for me.
Just the suffering the mages go through, the feeling of dispare that the life you have just have to be accepted and suffered because your a child and has no voice in this world that you're born in.
I have first-hand experience.
But I was so happy to see the characters having some good come there way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling fantasy romance
The discrimination of this dystopian society was enough to make me want to scream at times, and it was tough reading some of what Madeo and Jude went through in childhood, but it definitely helped with understanding the world and why Madeo is the way that he is. He definitely doesn’t trust easily, has a lot of walls, and has a bunch of prejudices that he uses to try to protect himself (and Jude). I enjoyed the slow process of Mads getting to know the Ono-Nai pride and learning that there actually are some decent people in the world.
The book brought me to tears on a few different occasions, and I loved to see how Mads and Jude took care of those they cared about (Logan, the kitties, innocents, and eventually the pride). The romance was understated, but I thought that worked well for getting past all Madeo’s walls. It felt a lot like platonic romancing of the whole pack and the magi, really, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone and starting to see what they’re up against.
Looking forward to what’s next!

2.0 out of 5 stars tellement larmoyant !
