The Sea Dragon King's Slave: A Gay Fantasy Romance (The Dragons of Serai Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 250 ratings

The Dragons of Serai Series continues in another gripping, sexy tale that crosses worlds. Get transported to Serai, a world populated by exciting fantasy races and ruled by Dragons searching for their eternal mates.

My life wasn't going anywhere, but it was still my own.

Until the day a light appeared on a Hawaiian beach and swallowed me whole. It spat me out into a deadly underwater world full of monsters and magic. But I was saved from the monsters by the greatest monster of all—a Sea Dragon. A monster who is also a man. A king, no less. And having saved my life, he claimed it as his.

King Asmar of the Rosrae Sea says I'm his slave. He says it over and over despite my protests. He doesn't believe me when I tell him that I'm from another world. Nor will he accept the fact that I will not call him master or serve him in bed. But the King doesn't force me into his arms. He seduces. He ensnares. He enthralls. And the Sea Dragon King is the most amazing man I've ever met. Arrogant, yes, but how could he not be? King Asmar is one of the most powerful men in the seas of Serai, with a legend that has survived centuries of hibernation. Men and women willingly offer themselves as tribute to him, entering contracts of slavery just for the chance of catching his eye and becoming his bed slave.

If I don't escape him soon, he will wear down my defenses, and I will become one of the many slaves who willingly serve him. But his city lies on the ocean floor, beneath thousands of feet of water, and no one within it would dare oppose the Sea Dragon King to help me. Unless I grow gills, my freedom is only a memory. The best I can do is hope that Asmar won't claim my heart as well.

The Dragons of Serai is a Gay Fantasy Romance series with stand-alone books, each one a new epic romance. But they are best read in order for clarity of Serai events.

Trigger Warning: This book contains some scenes that may disturb readers who are sensitive to abuse, including bondage, domination, sex with multiple partners, and some brief torture.

I knew the situation was going to be bad, so I was almost let down and relieved at the same time when it didn’t get as bad as I knew it could.

That doesn’t mean this didn’t go places. At one point, I realized how far this story had come and all that the “slave” had already been through. And there was still a whole lot more for him to go through.

I blame how the last story ended for what I was thinking about his friend until I was shown otherwise and that came with a small twist at the end. Of course.

Any sex warnings this time? Maybe, but I was good with most of it this time. I only half sympathize with Kaleb’s fight at being a “slave”. I totally blame another book I read where the couple pretended to be master and slave when out and about, and that was all it was. So they could function in that world and be able to go do the things they wanted or had to do.

At one point Az says this, but Kaleb couldn’t play along. I say half sympathize with him because Az had to be made aware that forced slavery was not good and for what he wanted with Kaleb this was not needed and could and, as it turned out, did backfired on him.

At the start of their story. Once they had clearly fallen for each other and the whole slave thing was just for appearances, I personally would have played along. Granted, how long could I have gone on like that? That would be a What If scenario.

I swear the amount of essence they produce for mating just keeps growing and growing. The first book did not have anywhere close to this much. Or the second one for that matter. I can see she was trying to get her foot in the door with those and didn’t want people running for the hill. She also has the excuse that, for these last other books, we are now dealing with two dragons instead of one.

With the next book I’m starting to feel like we are checking off a list with each story. And yes, it’s a sexual one.

Full five stars for this story. No half star hold outs here, because it all worked out in the end and I was entertained by the journey.

    Later.

Slavery theme was not to my liking as it frustrated me how Kaleb was being treated. But it's part of the story so... It was funny, sexy and intriguing.

As much as I love the book I start to notice all the series on how all the dragons are real A******. They always seem to cheat on their partners claiming they didn’t know till it was too late. In a way I wished kaleb had ended up with someone different like Az’s brother.

This is another fantastic book in an amazing series! I love how descriptive the author is and how easily she pulls you into her worlds with you. Kaleb and Asmar don’t have any easy or typical romance, and I love that they work through it to find each other. I can’t wait for the next book!

I have enjoyed the Dragons of Serai series; the world-building is interesting, the characters are engaging and the stories have the right amount of complexity to be both fun and absorbing.

The word "slave" is right in the title of this book, so readers will already know that this story uses the "slave falls in love with master" trope . While enslaving people is not treated as completely morally neutral in this book, it still glossed over the issue more than was comfortable to me. I have enjoyed the other books in this series enough that I expected better treatment of what is, to me, an already problematic trope.

    *slight spoilers ahead*

Hawaiian human Kaleb fights and protests being enslaved himself, but the story does not fully engage with the broader issue of slavery in the sea kingdom in a way that felt complete. Whilst the "sex slave" romance is a recognized trope and was expected because of the book's title, the king's "wrongs" with respect to slavery overall were forgiven too easily and the issue is not dealt with on a kingdom-wide level.

While challenging, the author is talented enough that I believe they could do better on this topic if she deals with it again in the future.

I liked this book because it twisted me up in all the right ways. It was hot and sexy while being sweet and endearing. Great characters with lots of room for growth.

I generally like this author, but feel very strongly she should have stayed away from this trope. This series is already rife with dubious consent and fantasy racism. To add Master/slave as the primary kink explored dials up the dubious consent to extremely uncomfortable levels for how it is handled. I don't have a problem with dubious consent, people should read and enjoy what they want. The issue here is that the author bends over backwards to portray this not as a dubious consent. Sexual coercion is a primary factor in most of the main characters sexual interactions and it is treated as romantic plot development. The mc justifies to himself on more than one occasion that what he experienced wasn't really rape because he physically enjoyed it, even if it caused him mental and emotional trauma. The main relationship in this book is abusive. Full stop. There is not a rewarding redeeming arc what so ever. After being treated awfully and finally getting away, the mc forgives their abuser after being pressured by his friend because of how romantic the abuser is being. This book is disturbing in how cavelier it portrays abuse as a trope for romance with no real arc dealing with the consequences, processing the trauma, or any sense of moral justice for the abuse inflicted. And all of that is fine, but the author needs to be upfront that this is what the story is about and not glamorize this situation.
