Sea of Wolves (The Wolves WW2 Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,191 ratings

1941 and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

Across the stormy North Atlantic, battle rages between wolfpacks of U-boats and escort ships fighting to protect the Allies’ vital convoys. Meanwhile, teams of codebreakers at Bletchley Park struggle to penetrate the German Navy’s Top-Secret Dolphin code, and unlock the flow of vital intelligence that will swing the battle in the Allies' favour.

Sea of Wolves plots the lives of three people caught up in the centre of the battle. Vera Baldwin, a young crossword-enthusiast, lifted from her quiet suburban life and thrown into the middle of the greatest codebreaking effort the world has seen. Otto Stuckmann, the rookie commander of U70, a German naval veteran struggling with the ceaseless demands being placed on him. Leonard Cole, the newly appointed first lieutenant of HMS Protea and a man with unfinished business to resolve.

Each is unknown to the others as their fates spiral around each other, touching and twisting towards a final encounter that will change their lives forever.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Sea of Wolves, a World War II thriller in the tradition of Douglas Reeman, once again evinces Philip Allan's considerable prowess as a storyteller."

George D. Jepson in
Quarterdeck Magazine
"Allan's prodigious research is deftly interwoven throughout, but it is at the level of storytelling that Sea of Wolves cruises most ably...The novel does an excellent job of illustrating how the outcome of an enormous event such as World War II depended upon the interconnectedness of minor figures often neglected by history."

John La Bonne's review in The Historical Novel Society

"
Sea of Wolves is a fascinating story, a tale of three parts, based on events that actually took place. While initially, the stories appear to be connected only by the thread of war, as the tale develops, we begin to see them join in more detail, as the battle for supremacy in the North Atlantic swings one way, then the other. The great skill in writing this sort of story lies in using the facts as a basis for the fiction, and in blurring the line between the two. So that, in the end, you cannot be certain which bits did happen and which might not have.

And this book does it perfectly."

Philip K Allan is a British author. He lives in the UK with his wife and his two teenage daughters. He has an excellent knowledge of the 18th century navy and believes the period has unrivalled potential for a writer. On the one hand there is the strange, claustrophobic wooden world of the period’s ships and on the other hand there is the boundless freedom to move those ships around the globe wherever the narrative takes them. All these possibilities are fully exploited in the Alexander Clay novels. Philip’s inspiration for the series was to build on the works of novelists like C.S. Forester and in particular Patrick O’Brian. His prose is heavily influenced by O’Brian’s immersive style. He too uses meticulously researched period language and authentic nautical detail to draw the reader into a different world. But the Alexander Clay books also bring something fresh to the genre, with a cast of fully formed lower deck characters with their own back histories and plot lines in addition to the officers. Think Downton Abbey on a ship, with the lower deck as the below stairs servants. Learn more at www.philipkallan.com

I couldn't wait to get up the next morning to continue the gripping tale. You'll fall in love with the characters. It's masterful the way he balances the human struggle between love of country and mankind. He is a true historical novelist, who does his due diligence before he writes. I couldn't help but imagine this story on the big screen and found myself even casting the film. What a talent to be able to write so smoothly and fluidly, the words just rolled off the page with such ease that I felt like I was there. I have a new favorite author.

This is a good book by an author who has found his stride. I really enjoyed it, but, if it were possible, I would have rated this 3.5 instead of 4. I enjoyed the story, but it was a bit short (A shortcoming of most self-published ebooks, I'm afraid). Things came together too easily to accurately portray the war. On the positive side, it was a good plot. The author did an excellent job of showing the interconnectedness of disparate groups and events that happen in a war.

While my tastes run to longer books where you get fuller character development, Mr. Allan did a good job of making his characters 3 dimensional. Overall, I would recommend this book.

I am a huge fan of the Alexander Clay series, and am constantly amazed by the depth and detail of Mr. Allan 's research. For that reason, I was a bit surprised by a couple of technical errors. Flower class corvettes were single screw vessels, not twin screw. Accommodation for ratings were hammocks, not bunks. Still, he did know that a major drawback to the original Flower design was the extreme separation of the mess decks from the galley. Countless meals were lost or ruined while being carried forward on the open decks.

If this is to be a series, I will certainly buy the next book.

This is an excellent series and the author succeeds in handling the complexities of the technology involved in a manner that is satisfying to both the novice and those very familiar with convoy battles in WW2. I hope that he continues the series, perhaps, even expands it to include U-boat ops against the USA (The second Happy Time).

Good read. Interesting characters with enough historical facts to flavor this brief glimpse into U-boats, sea warfare, and the naval use of the Enigma code machines. Author notes at end also very interesting.
