The Book Folk’s Seaside Psychological gathers together three of Mark West’s superb suspense thrillers and packages them together into one bargain boxset of novels. These books are perfect holiday reads. The short chapters and breakneck pace make for a compelling and entertaining reading experience.
In the first book, Don’t Go Back, Nick accompanies Beth to her childhood town of Seagrave to attend the funeral of a once-close friend. But she hasn’t told him everything about her past. Memories of one terrible summer will come flooding back to her. And with them, violence and revenge…
We get to experience Seagrave as a holiday destination in Still Waters Run, the second novel in the set. A short caravan break at the end of summer should be a chance for sixteen year old Dan and his recently-divorced mum to unwind. Yet despite quickly striking up new friendships, their vacation takes a nasty turn when a holiday worker is murdered. Dan becomes embroiled in events. Can he escape, or is he in too deep?
The final entry – We Were Seen – involves Kim Morgan, a local councillor whose opposition to the building of a new golf club in the area pitches her into a nightmare of blackmail and murder. Someone has discovered her dark secret and is using compromising photographs to exert some pressure. There are twists and turns and Kim has to use every ounce of her guile to stay ahead of her unknown blackmailer and avoid professional disaster.
Despite all three of these novels being set in the coastal town of Seagrave, each has an individual, clearly defined story and boasts a distinct array of characters. The plots are entirely self-contained, but they do all share those qualities that a reader looks for in a thriller novel - excellent prose, a decent pace, and an exciting story. It’s the town that’s the common denominator. You could almost think of it as the 'Westiverse', populated by damaged characters, dark deeds, and sinister shadows.
For those on a limited budget, or even those just on the look-out for an absolute bargain, Seaside Psychological is a great way to acquaint yourself with the twisted mind of Mark West. However, a word of warning - be prepared to set everything aside for the next few days, as once you start, you’ll be hooked. Highly recommended.
