The Second Time Around: A Small Town Second Chance Romance (A Willow Bay Novel Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 756 ratings

He broke her heart…but now he’s back to mend it.

When Brie Watkins’s ailing aunt asks her to return to Willow Bay to help at the family resort, she sells her beloved home, quits her job, and goes back to the last place she wants to be…only to find her aunt healthy, The Brown Resort thriving, and the man who left her at the altar living next door and looking as handsome as ever.

Why can’t life be fair?

Carpenter Carter Kessler left Willow Bay like he left his first love at the altar — swiftly, and without a backward glance. But the love that could have been has haunted him ever since. When his father passes away unexpectedly, Carter reluctantly returns to his hometown to find his family’s resort in shambles.

But even disaster has a silver lining — his new nextdoor neighbor is none other than his jilted bride. Determined to start afresh, Carter talks Brie into helping him with the refurbishments, but first she lays out the ground rules: they aren’t friends, they’ll never be lovers, and she’ll never stop hating him.

As far as Carter is concerned, it’s a start.

As summer heats up, so does their relationship. But as they peel back the layers, painful family secrets threaten to surface. Can they restore what they had, or are some things better left buried in the past?

This was a sweet and sad all at the same time.

Here are parts of the book I like: Brie and Carter ~

Today, she would set out on a journey to test her theory about love and loss, and heartache.

"Life is comprised of many small decisions that have great impact."

It's crazy how one decision can alter so many lives.

"Bless his soul" and "I'll pray for her."

"Men don't buy the cow if you give away the milk for free."

"Where are we now? Should we start from the beginning?"

"We've already had a beginning and an end."

"What do you say we start in the middle and write a new story."

It's time to erase the pain - make fresh memories to override that hurt and finish the love story they'd started.

This was a nice story by a talented author. Read the other two books. Happy reading.

This was one enjoyable and sweet small town romance that distracted me from what I should’ve been doing far too easily. It was well written and engaging for sure, and I liked Carter and Brie as characters. Author Kelly Collins portrayed Carter’s horror, frustration, and betrayal perfectly, and I absolutely understood his behaviour.

Brie came across rather naive as well as being heartbroken, which worked for the whole plot in that this was a small town and everyone knew everyone else’s business. She had a beautiful heart, that’s for sure and I sympathised so much with her.

My only beef was with the aunty who was a lying meddling busy-body with lovely intentions, absolutely the best and most noble intentions, but on the whole I found her unapologetic and somewhat annoying.

In all, I appreciated the structure of the whole story even I did find it to be too ‘non-spicy and nice’ for my usual tastes. But, if you love well-written-sweet-second-chance-small-town-romances, then I recommend this for you. 4-Sweet-Stars 🍭❤️🍬

Carter should have talked to Brie instead of running on their wedding day. Even after she hears his reasons I don't know if it should be quickly forgiven. Brie was naive about her parents and I was surprised considering how her father died that she would make the assumptions she did. But they were young and I wonder where their lives would have gone if they hadn't taken different paths. She's struggled with loss and seems to cling tightly to the ghost of her husband. Her aunt schemes to get her back to the inn to move on and enjoy life again. I loved the boat parades and the yummy sounding recipes in the book.

    3.5 stars

This is a quick read and started off strong. Brie, a 32 year old widow for the past 5 years, is called home to take care of her aunt. She sells everything, packs up her memories of her deceased husband and starts the drive home to Texas. Once she gets there, she realizes her aunt is not sick. She tricked her into coming home. This was all fine and good - it starts to get a little far fetched about now.

Once in Texas, she runs into her ex fiancé (which we knew nothing about). Apparently he left her at the altar and they haven’t spoken since. After just a FEW conversations (and without him explaining why he stood her up), she takes him back, I had major whiplash - there was far too little groveling going on.

It’s a cute story, but too many things seemed a little unrealistic (how Brie was the only one that didn’t understand why her fiancé left her at the altar; that she didn’t know her mother’s lifelong secret; that she didn’t know how her own father died and under which conditions; the list could go on and on).

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A sweet story of first love getting a second chance. Much more complex than the title would imply. All sorts of characters from a small southern beach town. Some twists are predictable but there are several so you may not guess them all. Got this one free but did not have to promise a review, it was so good I wanted to leave one. Also so good , have already purchased the next book in the series!

This gave me all those small town vibes that I was looking for with a second chance romance thrown in. It was pretty typical stories that I have read in this same vein, which wasn’t a bad thing, but nothing knocked my socks off either. I think the only different thing that stood out was the secret of Brie’s mother and Carter’s father, and how that messed with Brie and Carter’s relationship. I did like them together, but I wish there was a little more angst. I think it was pretty easy for them to get in the groove again and not that strong of a denial. It was a solid read though.

What a memorable story. Sometimes things happen in life, you are hurt beyond what you feel is possible. Life takes you in a different direction, then thru life's circumstances and again reasons you don't understand, you are back where you grew up. Giving you a second chance, new beginnings, and learning things you may feel betrayed by, but through the years, you have grown up to have more understanding. Beautiful family, story ❤️, love comes full circle.

This is a beautiful and lovely book. I always love second chance romances especially if they are together a long time and this was truly lovely. Even though the story graph downed in the middle slightly the finish was too good to make it a 5 star book. Follow my Goodreads page habit_of_book_reading for many such reviews.

Light easy read, second time around love can be stronger than first time around, provided family secrets can be overlooked.
