    This book has EXCELLENT character development. The emotions felt through all of the characters are absolutely felt by the reader. I thought this was one of the best books I have read in awhile, focusing on a small town romance with a bit of a city twist. Highly recommend! I hope there is a part 2!

    Jackson is a police detective and secret billionaire. He became a billionaire by the simple act of investing a `bunch of money’ in the stock market. Easy peasy. Jackson was formerly on the police force in NYC but became disillusioned because of the corruption in the judicial system there. He returns to his hometown of Cedar Ridge, Virginia and joins the police force. Unfortunately there’s not much to do but search for lost cats (???) and chase his sister’s best friend Allie. That is until the infamous Talon Gang from NYC makes an appearance.

    Allie is temporarily managing Sweet Grains Bakery for Jackson’s sister while she’s away. Allie has been badly treated by her ex boyfriend so she is distrustful of men. She is snippy and snappy with Jackson saying - `I don’t need your help!’ When he kindly offers to help with the bakery. But Allie has no problem asking her untrustworthy but wealthy ex Michael (also a cop in NYC) for a loan to start her own business in property management. Little does she know a secret billionaire is right beside her!

    At the same time the Sweet Grains Bakery is repeatedly vandalized. Jackson believes it has something to do with the Talon Gang. Is Allie’s ex Michael connected to a criminal empire, the Talon Gang ? Is Allie putting herself in danger by going to Michael for money?

    Jackson has returned home from NYC and still remains a detective but now for his hometown. He promised his sister, Emily, that he would keep an eye on her bakery, while she recovered from her appendectomy at her parents’ in Florida. Her bestie, Allie is doing her own work in finance as well as baking at the bakery and keeping it going and she is frazzled because things begin to go weird. Jackson is still recovering from a case that went from being open and shut regarding drug trafficking and other nasty things, when it was covered up and Jackson is angry and resentful at first. But, he is shocked at the difference he sees in his sister’s bestie, Allison Raven or Allie. She is very independent and doesn’t want Jackson’s help when things go awry. Poor Allie is semi-fascinated and dislikes how “alpha” Jackson is and how he wants to take care of everything. Her mom’s cat, Mister Whiskers is a troublemaker and I love the little nut. lol. Cats are crazy and funny most of the time. I too, had a cat named Whiskers when I was younger.

    The town went from almost no crime to pretty much a crime wave. Things go from mischief to crazy and scary in only a short time and finding out all about the Jackson’s NYC case and the things that happen, is just crazy. Allie is in danger, although she doesn’t believe it at first. Things just get worse and worse and finally Emily comes home to heck in a hand basket. I was impressed with how all of the characters worked together and how they figured stuff out. Allie and Jackson end up staying at Emily’s and things progress that neither expected. It was definitely a shocker when they did things I didn’t expect them to. I needed the AC on the whole time and I chewed on my nails with worry. The book was awesome and suspenseful and my stomach hurt too. I laughed a lot at how Jackson and Allie interacted with each other. Or when he interacted with other certain people. I hope we get to see Emily find someone.
