Nicola Cornick is a historian and author who works as a researcher and guide for the National Trust in one of the most beautiful 17th century houses in England. She writes dual time novels that illustrate her love of history, mystery and the supernatural, and focus on women from the footnotes of history. Her books have appeared in over twenty five languages, sold over eight million copies worldwide and been described as "perfect for Outlander fans." Nicola also gives writing and history talks, works as a consultant for TV and radio, and is a bookseller at the Wantage Bookshop.

Her new dual time novel, 'The Secrets of the Rose' is set during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 and features the Northumbrian heroine Dorothy Forster, whose family owned the mighty Bamburgh Castle.     This is another excellent dual-timeline novel written by Nicola Cornick, one of my favorite authors.

    In this story, we have Dorothy Forster in the early 1700s during the uprising to restore King James II to the throne. Dorothy and her family live in Bamburgh Castle.

    In the present day, we have Hannah Armstrong, an author who has been commissioned to write a biography of Grace Darling, a local heroine who helped rescue survivors from a shipwreck.

    The Rose appears in both timelines.

    A lovely little historical novel based loosely on a little know woman character in the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. Told in dual timelines of the present and the 1700s there are parallels in the characters lives and as you read you'll discover the connection.. With a touch of magic and romance, this story is an entertaining read that also gives some insight into a historical time and place.

    Reading about Dorothy Forster, John Armstrong life then they got married with her cousin Guy Forster and her aunt Rose gave their blessing and stood by them to be witness to their marriage.
    Hannah Armstrong and Aaron, Hannah’s stepmom Diana and Bill
    are very happy Hannah has come back home to live and are happy she’s found Aaron.
    I love read Nicola Cornick stories, I always let my friends know when she has a new book out.
    I enjoyed reading 1715 Dorothy Forster, William, her ailing father, her two brother her older brother Thomas, you're brother Nicholas, when her mom died she was a child she took care of Nicholas.

    This is a fabulous story it is a long time since I have read one of Nicola Cornick’s books and I am so glad I picked this one up, set over two time lines centuries apart in the same home and town we meet Dorothy Forester during the Jacobite Rebellion and Hannah Armstrong in the present, the story is intriguing, so well written and it was hard to put down.

    1715 the country is on the brink of rebellion, Dorothy Forester lives in Bamburgh Hall with her ailing father, her older brother, Thomas is away at parliament in London and younger brother Nicholas is as Oxford, but trouble is brewing and Dorothy gets caught between the warring factions, all she want is to keep her family safe and then there is the mystery of The Rose a talisman that is hundreds of years old and it is said that her family is the keeper of The Rose and she knows she must keep it safe from falling into the wrong hands. The local blacksmith John Armstrong is there to support and help Dorothy and they get closer throughout the trying times.

    Present times Hannah has returned home to Bamburgh to write a biography on a local hero Grace Darling but when she arrives she finds that her step-mother Diana is not well and that she has kept things from Hannah about her brother Brandon and Hannah is determined to get to the truth and this brings her to researching Dorothy Forester another local heroine during the Jacobite Rebellion and the more she digs the more she seems to think that there is a lot more to this myth about The Rose and is there a chance that somehow she is linked to The Rose as well and then danger arrives and like in her past there is someone there to save her Aaron her teenage crush, will they find the answers to the myths and secrets that abound around The Rose?

    Nicola Cornick has researched and come up with a story that is intriguing, magical and has the reader thinking about myth, legend and facts, the characters are so very good and I felt a connection to them from the start, well most of them there are some that show their true self and I have no problem highly recommending this one to any reader and lover of a good historical story with a touch of everything in it. I loved it.

    Not knowing much of the UK's history, it's heroes and heroines, and the importance upon future generations and the country as a whole. I'm learning a bit by reading some novels. The storyline and characters of Secrets of the Rose are well-written and well-developed. This particular novel was captivating and very interesting. Wouldn't mind doing some historical research myself!

    I love everything Nicola writes. I'm heading to the north of England, which she describes so well. As someone whose ancestors - from Uhtred son of Uhtred - ruled the north, I was very interested to learn the later history. Always enjoy a Jacobite novel too.     I bought it on kindle and I struggled to put it down, as long twas I finished it the day after I bought it. Beautiful dual time story, absolutely brilliantly written as are each one of this author's that I have read. It is clean too, I love that they don't depend on bed scenes to fill a few pages, this story held my interest through every single page,I didn't want it to finish but at the same time I was desperate to know how it was going to end.

    I really loved this book and think it is one of the author's best. It comprises two intertwined stories both set in the vicinity of Bamburgh Castle on the Northumberland coastline of England, one at the time of the Jacobite uprising of 1715, and the other in the present day.
    Skilfully written, with two strong lead female characters, Hannah and Dorothy, that are credible, admirable and who pulled me straight into the heart of the story and kept me there right to the very end.

    I loved this story and I especially liked the character of Dorothy in the earlier period ( 1715). She was a very capable woman but was held back by the men in her life, thinking that women weren’t capable of intelligent thought and she confine their abilities to the domestic areas. There are also some very dangerous people who Dorothy needs to thwart and maybe a romance. In the present day, Hannah has returned home to Bamburgh for a writing assignment and she has to face up to seeing an old love plus finding out what her brother is up to. I loved the setting of Bamburgh and having visited there a few times, the descriptions brought back happy memories. Both women are strong characters and I enjoyed the way the stories linked together. There is a paranormal element to the story that I wasn’t expecting but did enjoy. I received a copy of this book and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. However, I did preorder my own copy.

    The two stories in this book, past and present, all circle around the Jacobite period and the mystery surrounding the two families Forster and Armstrong. I loved it! Nicola writes with such passion and knowledge which makes it all come to life and jump out of the page to you the reader. Having read the book I now want to pursue my knowledge of the Jacobite period, it made me want to know more history. Nicola's books do not disappoint and let us know await the next one with deepened interest
