This is a fun, teen-centered read that reminded me a little of H20 but a tiny bit darker. While it’s a little younger than the age range I usually read, I actually really enjoyed the mystery and the characters. Despite the darker aspects of the story (really nothing that should turn teen readers away - in fact, I think it would really excite them), there’s also plenty of humor. Glowella, the way the girls talk, and more make this the perfect read for teens, especially teen girls who love witty heroines and some unique plot aspects… mer-zombies most of all! Really neat way to combine both mermaids and zombies into a supernatural mystery with some light moments that make you absolutely fall in love with the characters.
Another cool thing is that even though I haven’t read the first book in the Merblood Saga, I didn’t feel like I was missing vital information—rather, this could be read as a standalone within a series. I fell in love with Selena and Chloe immediately, and I could see people approaching this series in whatever order and still knowing what was going on.
All in all, a unique and imaginative read for teens that mixes mystery, magic, crazy stakes, and a good dose of humor. I really enjoyed it, and I know as a teen, I would have enjoyed it just as much if not more!

I just finished Selena Flowers and the Phantom Tides and honestly, it was even more fun—and more intense—than the first book. This series has such a unique voice, and I love how it blends the whimsical with the downright weird in the best way. Zombie mermaids? Check. Magical squid? Absolutely. Haunted seas with food coming to life and sprinting down the street? I mean, how could I not be obsessed?

Selena and Chloe are such a solid duo. Their friendship feels real, and I was cheering for them the whole way. This time around, the story hits harder emotionally too. The stakes felt higher, especially with all the eerie things happening in Madderly Bay. The earthquakes, the creepy green water, and the claw marks showing up around town gave the whole book a mystery-horror vibe I wasn't expecting—but loved.

Zelda and Glowella (the squid, who is a total queen) brought so much fun and magical energy to the story. I found myself racing through the chapters just to see what kind of chaos or clue would come next. And the way the magical and human worlds are connected is written so well. There’s depth beneath all the adventure and humor.

If you’re into stories that mix mermaids, mayhem, and magic with characters you genuinely care about, this one’s worth diving into. I can’t wait to see what happens next—because after that ending? Yeah, things are definitely not over.

Ella English transports readers to a fantasy world where Selena and her best friend, Chloe, discover that their humdrum existence in Madderly Bay, a quiet seaside village, is actually overrun with dark forces. Earthquake tremors signal to the girls that the zombie mermaids may be back and up to no good. It’s up to them to save both the human and magical worlds from the threat. It is the perfect set up to a fantasy adventure that will pull in readers.

This delightful read is targeted to teens, but like the Harry Potter books, it is one of the those stories so rich in detail and world building that adults will also enjoy it. Selena knows something is off in her town before the adults do. That is always a fun premise for younger readers. She is a smart heroine and one compliments the interesting cast of supporting characters and neighbors of Madderly Bay. Ella English doesn’t skimp on colorful language that perfectly sets the stage for the plot. Selena’s backstory of nearly drowning when she was young is also a tool that breeds empathy for this wonderful main character. The setting gives off a perfect small town vibe and then launches into excitement. Readers will follow Selena’s quest and certainly appreciate the intensity.

I’ve been looking forward to reading Ella English’s Selena Flowers and the Phantom Tides after having read the first book in The Merblood Saga. Selena Flowers’s story features the same, fast-paced narrative and sharp writing as before, and I quickly found myself swept up in the Selena’s story—to the point of reading it almost all in one sitting. English’s descriptive detailing, while in some books would slow things down, does the opposite: it creates a book where instead of “just” reading a book and being entertained, one feels completely immersed in the adventure. This book has elements that I never thought I’d absolutely *need* in a story: mer-zombies, an enchanted sea, food that comes to life, and, my personal favorite, a magical squid named “Glowella” (who adds some of the most charming and humorous moments. Without giving away the plot, I think this book is smart, witty, and a great ride that adults and young adults alike would enjoy.

Enchanting, hilarious, and thrillingly action-packed — Ella English’s writing sparkles with vivid descriptions and wicked humor. Take Ellora the sea witch: “more octopus in a jar than regal sorceress.” Loved Mrs. Norris’ blue-rinsed hair hitting octaves in Madderly Bay, followed by Selena’s snarky observation about bling-based brainwashing.

English crafts an immersive world where food dances breakdance-style midair, a dough boy craves endless snacks, and Faustina—zombie queen of the sea—sows chaos under Ellora’s spell. When zombie Aunt Ada calls for aid (and divine elixirs), Selena, Chloe & Zelda plunge into underwater peril!

English shines at fleshing out characters: even Glowella the talking squid feels like old friends here! No need to read Book 1 first—the author weaves enough context to onboard newbies seamlessly.

Beneath all this whimsy? A heartfelt message of resilience & conviction against impossible odds. In short: magic! mischief! Characters you’ll never forget! 🦑✨

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome world-building (underwater!)

I read ‘Selena Flowers and the Cursed Ruby’ last summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I’m not Ella English’s target audience (think ‘Harry Potter’ with the original artwork), I didn’t care and tore through it over a sunny weekend (think ‘Harry Potter’ in the adult artwork). This sequel is just as good. It’s enchanting, fast-paced and adventurous, and it pulled me straight back into a world full of magic, mystery and, above all else, friendship. Did it matter that I’d been fortunate enough to read Book One? No! ‘Selena Flowers and the Phantom Tides ‘works perfectly well as a standalone novel.

Set once again in the quaint seaside town of Madderly Bay, Selena and her chum, Chloe, find themselves caught up in an unsettling series of events that turn their long summer into a conflict between two very different worlds. English gets straight to the point with Disney-eque bakery products (“Selena couldn’t believe her eyes. The high street was out of control. As a pancake frisbee flew over her head, she grabbed Chloe and yanked her down to avoid getting clobbered.”) Things quickly escalate as an odd green glow, reminiscent of Glowella’s backyard tank, appears at Zelda’s ivy-covered cottage, heralding the return of Faustina and the zombie mermaids... Oh, I should have said Glowella is Selena’s magical bioluminescent squid companion!

‘Cursed Ruby’ is set out in over 100 short chapters. I quite like this because it means it’s really easy to take a break (perfect for Young Adult readers and their readily-interruptable lifestyles). About halfway through, English introduces Ellora, the last of the sea witches (think Ursula from ‘The Little Mermaid’). Her search for a cursed ruby necklace brings even darker magic to Madderly Bay, forcing Selena and her friends to take action before both worlds are consumed by ancient forces.

The strong relationships between the principal characters, Selena, Chloe and Zelda, make this a standout book. Their friendship sits at the very heart of this story, as does their courage as they face a myriad of dangers. These are very relatable characters, which is exactly what a successful YA fantasy requires. As they confront their fears and progress through a variety of challenges (magical and otherwise), their bond develops, and the reader learns that growth isn’t just about winning the day.

This character development is critical. Selena is the resourceful, brave protagonist, but Chloe and the other characters breathe life into the story. There is loyalty, mysticism, wit and charm (particularly aged Aunt Ada, an undead fish teacher who communicates telepathically with Selena), which help to soften some of the darker elements of the books. And the world-building! It’s awesome, rich and immersive. English somehow merges the mundane with the mystical, both in the sleepy town and Under the Sea. I particularly liked the description of the tides (at the heart of the story) and the natural world—I live by the sea, and I’ve seen the creeping fog! This is truly impressive when English describes the underwater merkingdom and its host of creatures—zombie and otherwise—that differentiates this story from the Disney ‘fluff’. Bravo!

Ella English takes readers on another captivating journey in Selena Flowers and the Phantom Tides, the second installment of The Merblood Saga. The story plunges us into the enigmatic seaside village of Madderly Bay, where eerie and magical phenomena disrupt what initially seemed like a mundane summer for Selena and her best friend, Chloe. From food springing to life to mysterious claw marks and ominous green tides, the atmosphere brims with suspense as danger lurks beneath the waves.
The characters shine in this thrilling adventure.
