About the authors
I’m Julie Bjelland, LMFT, a Highly Sensitive, Autistic, Licensed Psychotherapist, author, and founder of Sensitive Empowerment, specializing in high sensitivity and adult-diagnosed autism in women. I love developing tools that balance our sensitive nervous system, reduce challenges, and help us reach our fullest potential so we may excel in our unique talents. I’ve created a global hub of extensive support, including a #1 new release children’s book for the sensitive and neurodivergent, online courses, the Sensitive Empowerment Community—a nurturing sanctuary—the Autistic Women’s Group, a globally top-ranked podcast, articles, free webinars, and more. My passion is helping create a world where differences are embraced as strengths and celebrated. LGBTQIA+ affirming. Learn more at JulieBjelland dot com.
Carol Huckle co-hosts “Intuitive Parenting” events inside the Sensitive Empowerment Community to support caregivers of sensitive little ones. As a volunteer Children's Librarian leading pre-K through 5th-grade reading groups, she often wished for books with characters that reflected the unique traits of bright, sensitive children. An introverted child, Carol’s favorite books were her best friends, inspiring the character Buttercup. Buttercup’s passion for research was inspired by Carol’s daughter, whose literary explorations discovered the unique, joyful dance of the blue-footed booby. This inspired the wonderfully extroverted character Blueberry. Carol is thrilled to collaborate with Julie in creating characters that celebrate being their authentic, unique selves! Carol lives by the ocean with her amazingly supportive fiancé (soon to be husband) Kyle.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2024Beautifully written book! Celebrates empathy and compassion and loving yourself for who you are.
Before reading the first chapter I was feeling heavily overwhelmed due to the fast pace of my work place. I wasn't being easy on myself, especially because my coworkers seemed to not feel as overwhelmed.
It was nice to see a character in the book go through similar overwhelm and be responded to with compassion and not criticism. I felt very heard reading that and I was able to apply the same compassion to myself.
I recommend buying this book for your sensitive/neurodivergent children. Let them understand that they are okay the way they are and their difference is beautiful! ❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2024I just read The Adventures of Niko the Highly Sensitive Dog, and I was suffused with the same warm feelings I had when my grandmother read to me as a child. This book is a masterpiece for both sensitive children and adults. Kudos to the artist, as well. It was truly a privilege to read this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2024This is a beautiful book in its words and pictures and would generally appeal to kids and adults. But its real magic is in the message it carries to children who, like characters in the book, are highly sensitive. It lets them know they are not alone in finding parts of the world just too much at times. With a tone of kindness and total acceptance it encourages self acceptance and demonstrates how HSP kids deserve understanding and acceptance by others. The characters are delightful upbeat folks who find the environment, places and people where they feel comfortable and thrive. They are great role models for kids who share their HSP traits and can use the support of knowing how valuable and unique they are.
Can't wait for more in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2024As a coach for highly sensitive people, I see this book as a great opportunity for sensitive children to feel understood and to see themselves in a positive light. The experiences shared by Niko and Juju offer examples of what being highly sensitive can be like in a non-sensitive world and not only validate them, but show ways to create resonant environments and activities. Sensitive children will see themselves in the characters and connect with their experiences and feel uplifted and hopeful. And I love the interaction of the characters with nature and its creatures, which is so important for sensitives. I'm looking forward to book 2!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2024I couldn't be more excited for this book. As an HSP I wish this story existed when I was a child. It would have helped me tremendously to know that there was nothing wrong with me. The authors have created sweet characters and a wonderful story. Niko, Juju and their friends go on an adventure filled with trust, calm, acceptance, fun and true friendship. I know this book will be a huge gift to HSP and neurodivergent children. Please consider buying copies to donate to your local library, schools and also give as gifts, so the message of acceptance can be spread far and wide into the hearts that need to hear it the most.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2024My sensitive 5-year-old has read this book every day since we got it! She keeps referring back to it in conversations too, it's very much on her mind. She loves all the characters and resonates with them in many ways. As a mom, that definitely qualifies the book for a 5 star review from our family! As a therapist and coach working with kids, I highly recommend it to my clients and anyone else who appreciates the beauty and quiet strength of sensitive souls.
