About the author

Chris describes herself as a compulsive story-teller, cat slave and hen keeper. Originally from the UK, she now resides in the Western Cape of South Africa.
Her most recent novels, 'Song of the Sea Goddess' and it's sequel, 'Spirit of the Shell Man' were inspired by the charm and beauty of her adopted country where, in Chris's vivid imagination, myth and reality collide on the southern shores of Africa.
Other novels:
'You'll Never Walk Alone - Thrills and Spills in 1980s Liverpool'
'Following the Green Rabbit - a fantastical adventure'
‘The Silver Locket’ (published under pen name, Holly Atkins)
'Song of the Sea Goddess' and 'Following the Green Rabbit' are also available as audiobooks.
A selection of her poetry is included in 'Creation and the Cosmos - a poetic anthology', published by Raw Earth Ink in 2021.
She has also published a tiny taster of her work in a short story collection, 'A Sextet of Shorts'.
More of her short fiction has appeared in 'Adler's Writing' and 'One Minute Wit'. Her work also appears in the 'Writing My City' anthology, published in Cape Town in 2019.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved reading this collection of short stories by Chris Hall. All of them are unique and interesting. A great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood set of short stories. Perfect for travel or any time you don't want to commit to a full length novel
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2020Format: KindleHits every possible mark in terms of what a reader should want out of a short story collection. I had prickly vibes of Salinger’s “Nine Stories” throughout, on account of the huge range of characters, settings, emotions, and miniature plots. Some would say that a shorter collection like this would benefit from being longer, but in Chris’ case, I disagree. “A Sextet of Shorts” is a complete summation of its parts and I am genuinely happy to have another go-to indie author to add to my favorites list. WELL DONE! 💯
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a nice little collection of shorts. I would not consider all six to be complete short stories, but that does not detract from their tales. My personal favorite, and one that makes the whole collection worth purchasing, was the last tale, A New Friend for Henry. This is a great little tale of how the old family cat and the new family kitten became friends. It provided a great finish to the collection that also included stories on soldiers arriving at a farmhouse, an advertising agency being targeted, a secret eating cow, a suicidal ghost, and the pain a family goes through when fighting for the right to die with dignity. Overall, a clean collection with no noticeable editing flaws.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2019Format: KindleI enjoy good short stories, and in this Sextet of Shorts, Chris Hall does an amazing job. Each story is complete and fulfilling, and left me wanting for just a bit more.
My favorites were "The Swindler," because it left me thinking, and "A New Friend for Henry," because it left me smiling.
Chris Hall, as usual, tells some good stories. Stories I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crisp stories to keep you rivetted
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe world is shrinking and so is the attention span of average humans. We have too many things on our plate these days, too many problems to be taken care of, too many issues to be resolved. Hence sometimes one feels overwhelmed and the mind too lazy to even decipher the intricate patterns woven by a flowing river of words.
Chris Halls stories are for such a moment, such a day....Crisp is the word that came to my mind when i read the first one. She doesn't miss out on providing the necessary details, yet she does it with a sort of brevity that is very refreshing. Besides the plot is intriguing and that helps to keep the attention rivetted as well making the crispiness of the delivery even more welcome.
I would heartily recommend this "sextet" of stories to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Skill of the Short
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTo write a short story which is effective with well developed characters and a well defined plot is by no means an easy task, yet in this collection, Chris Hall exhibits both flair and skill. Each story twists beautifully and leaves the reader satisfied yet wanting more - not because there are undeveloped themes but because her writing is joyful
This collection includes a variety of stories which touch on a range of genres, and as such includes something for everyone.
This thoroughly enjoyable anthology of shorts offers a great introduction to Chris Hall's writing, but equally is a fine stand alone collection.
I only wish there had been more stories in which to lose myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Talented Multi-genre Author
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseChris Hall's short stories remind me of Roald Dahl's " Tales of the Unexpected"; they all had a slightly skewed or 'one dimension over' perspective. The Author exhibits a true flair for everything from biography, to paranormal, to thriller, and more, and I'll make a point to buy more of her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Less IS More
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWith collections of short stories, the first thing I am drawn to is the introduction. There was none. And no dedication. And no About the author section. What drew me to this collection was word of mouth, a review from a trusted source. And when I saw the interesting cover by Cliff Davies with the tagline “An eclectic collection of short stories” my interest was piqued further.
The initial feeling I had about this book was less is more. This continued with the price. Ninety-nine pence. Sold.
The prose is polished. The editing is professional. The presentation and ordering of the stories is just right, starting with an emotional and physical bang, and ending with a heartwarming and charming tale.
The characters, the viewpoints chosen to tell the stories, fit together seamlessly despite there being no linked theme or central location. Each story is completely stand alone yet the author’s cosy and confident style make you want to keep reading.
I don’t have a favourite story or a least favourite story; I love every story in this collection. Each story feels familiar, like a friend visiting after a long absence, a true friend, one you are totally relaxed with and could listen to all night long.
Regrettably it only took me about an hour and a half to read these stories; however, I did willingly read them again and then again days later, curled up on my favourite comfy chair in the lounge with a hot chocolate early evening. Something I never do!
SUMMARY:
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this eclectic collection of short stories and wholeheartedly recommend it. I cannot wait to read more of this author’s published work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, highly entertaining collection
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis short but ever-so-sweet collection of little tales is a wonderful way to idle away a lazy afternoon, and the perfect introduction to Hall’s work if you’re new to her writing. It opens with a tension-packed story called “The Day the Soldiers Came” and ends with “A New Friend for Henry”, an adorable tale about an old cat who is forced to adapt to a new little sister. This is testament to the versatile nature of Hall’s writing; she can pen tense drama just as skilfully as sweet animal adventures.
My favourites in the collection are “Dying with Determination” and “Daisy”. The first is a moving tale about a woman who is asked by her sick mother to help her die with dignity. It’s wrought with emotion as the protagonist must figure out the ethics of the situation and choose to do what’s right, both for her mother and for herself. “Daisy” is wholly different; it’s about a seedy politician who is accosted by a man with a fearsome robotic cow and forced to reveal shady secrets about the inner workings of the council. It’s hilarious and terrifying and somehow incredibly uplifting to see a dodgy politician get his comeuppance.
My biggest problem with A Sextet of Shorts? It’s not long enough. Nowhere near. I’d like more!
