A Shadow in the Ember (Flesh and Fire Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 36,114 ratings

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns with book one of the all-new, compelling Flesh and Fire series—set in the beloved Blood and Ash world.

Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers.
Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.

However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania—she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission—one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then…end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.

Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A
monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeit—it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

About the Author

#1 New York Times and #1 International Bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout lives in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. All the rumors you’ve heard about her state aren’t true. When she’s not hard at work writing, she spends her time reading, watching really bad zombie movies, pretending to write, hanging out with her husband, her Border Jack—Apollo, Border Collie—Artemis, six judgmental alpacas, two rude goats, and five fluffy sheep. In early 2015, Jennifer was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a group of rare genetic disorders that involve a breakdown and death of cells in the retina, eventually resulting in vision loss, among other complications. Due to this diagnosis, educating people on the varying degrees of blindness has become another passion for her, right alongside writing, which she plans to do for as long as she can.

Her dreams of becoming an author started in algebra class, where she spent most of her time writing short stories...which explains her dismal grades in math. Jennifer writes young adult, paranormal, science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary romance. She is published with Tor, HarperCollins Avon and William Morrow, Entangled Teen and Brazen, Disney/Hyperion, Harlequin Teen, and Blue Box Press; and PassionFlix recently made her Wicked series into a feature film. Jennifer has won numerous awards, including the 2020 Goodreads Choice Award in Romance for her adult fantasy,
From Blood and Ash. She has also written Adult and New Adult contemporary and paranormal romance under the name J. Lynn.

Book one of the Flesh and Fire series. This series does connect with the Blood and Ash series too! So make sure you’re reading that series as well. There are different reading orders but I chose to read Blood and Ash all the way through first and then pick up Flesh and Fire. Apparently you need to read both series all the way through before picking up The Primal of Blood and Bone (not yet released). So just check your reading order before committing! It’s a great series and as much as you’ll love Cas, you’ll love Nyktos more!

A Shadow in the Ember starts a prequel series in the same universe as the From Blood and Ash series. This is the story of Nyktos and his consort. Reading this book was almost like reading From Blood and Ash again, but different enough to keep things interesting. If you loved the first series, you should love this one too since there are many of the same tropes, wording, dialogue, etc. it was kind of like getting to read a book over again for the first time. I really enjoyed it, but others might find it repetitive. For me, this was 5 stars!

i never thought i'd say this but it might be true...
Nyktos is quiet and gentle, until he's not. he's charming and a little cheeky and everything about him gives such soft daddy vibes- including the way he is with taking care of his own people.
his interactions with sera were heart pounding and the yearning in the beginning gave me butterflies.
i was, at times, a little frustrated with the story because there were multiple times that things could have been cleared up with a simple conversation, but my love for the characters and finding little things that connected flesh and fire and blood and ash kept me loving this book.

the entire cast of side characters is really fun and i LOVED seeing little reaver and baby jadis SO much! i need more of everyone immediately and i can't wait to eat up more of the history and lore of this world.

Is Seraphina going to actually fulfill her duties? or is she going to find a family who actually loves and cares for her?

I love this series and the Blood and Ash as well. I switch between reading and audible. The narrator on these books and the Blood and Ash is not great. One, this would have better being dual. Two, I feel like Stina didn't get inflections right. Her male character voices are really hard to listen to. And many times with Sera and Poppy - it felt like she got it wrong. So bottom line - I suggest reading it. Listening wasn't great for me. So five stars for the book - dropping one for the narration.

I couldn’t put the book down. I am so invested in this series now that I am so excited to jump into the next book.

I struggled through the first half of the book, I couldn’t connect with Sera and found her somewhat annoying, still do. But in the end, I love the background it provides for the blood and ash series. The inexperienced MMC was kinda creepy at first but then it was kinda endearing as you learned more about him. I don’t know how that happened to make the flip but when they were analyzing the prophecy, I found myself holding my breath. Glad I read as intertwined series after Book 3. -Mel

I went into this not knowing much other than it was the start to a prequel series for FBAA. It naturally has very similar vibes but this is sooooooo much better. Don’t get me wrong, I love FBAA but this book was such an amazing surprise and the banter/steam was 🥵🥵🥵

Rereading the series and reminded how much I love these characters. When I first read the Blood and Ash books I wasn’t sure I wanted to read the Flesh and Fire series as well - it’s a lot of books to commit to but I have enjoyed these so much they’re now a favorite.

Highly recommend but honestly would say start with Blood and Ash - though YMMV

Sera realizing that she doesn’t need to kill Nyktos and Nyktos (and the rest of the Shadowlands) learning to trust her again as well are a great start to the series. Love the supporting characters and a well developed world and magic system of the Primals. Recommend

A masterpiece. Tout simplement. Je n'ai pas d'autres mots.

Jennifer’s works are so difficult to get out of!! I get so submerged into them, the characters, the world she creates! And undoubtedly The BLOOD AND ASH World is one of my favourites! The ending unnerved me thoroughly!!!! Can’t wait for the next of both the interwoven series!!💞💞

Where do I start. WHERE DO I START.

I began this approximately 2 hours after I finished Gilded Bones; because that one left us in such a cliffhanger that I needed more more MORE of this insane world.

I went into it fully aware of the said-similarities between Sera/Nyktos and our beloved Poppy/Cas. And dare I ever utter it…but I think I may love Sera and Nyktos MORE than Poppy and Casteel. JLA knows how to write chemistry and tension between characters, and if anything that was the most present familIar theme. The witty banter and cheeky dialogue and sexual tension is just unreal.

There are definitely major semblances and nods to our awesome originals, but Sera and Nyktos have their own personalities that are present from the start. And if you just had Gilded Bones fresh in your memory, like I did, you’ll remember that Nyktos specifically tells Poppy that she reminds him so much of HER (being his consort, which we now know is Sera) and that SHE is going to be THRILLED TO KNOW THIS.

    Thrilled. To. Know. This.

If that doesn’t set up for how badass and alike Sera and Poppy are….

I absolutely loved FBAA and the world-building and characters created, but hopping back in time to experience the foreshadowing of things I already knew? Brilliant. THE PROPHECY!? The layered effect of bringing so much back into the FBAA series to make so many things click, and literally make me squeal in joy or anger or surprise. Just so so good.

The characters in this story have my heart. Nyktos is my new book boyfriend; he is absolutely dreamy in the way he has a good heart but a rough exterior; the way he only wants to fiercely protect his people; his desire to be terrifying but would literally damn his soul to save the ones he loves. Big Rhysand energy. And Nektas, and Jadis and Reaver, and the entire Draken?! We have DRAKEN. Nektas and Jadis’ scenes were too pure and adorable; I need so much more of this Draken business.

To sum it up: this was a perfect prequel that I didn’t know I needed. But now I cannot live without. Seraphina fascinates me, seeing her and Nyktos actually begin to know and care for each other gave my little heart palpitations.

Thank you JLA for creating this gorgeous, terrifying, beautiful, insane world we’ve all come to love. So ready for AWOTQ!
