Shadow of a Lie: DS Tony Heaton's Cold Cases Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 883 ratings

‘Meet your new partner.’ I shake his hand and wish I could say no. He’s brimming with youthful energy and optimism. He thinks we can solve this case, a case that destroyed my career, a case where the killer is still at large thirty years after the murder.

He’s going to make me jump through hoops even though we’re the same rank because he knows I have no choice. But he doesn’t know everything and soon he’s going to learn my secrets are far too dangerous to be revealed.

Reopen my old case? They don’t know how far I will go to protect the truth.

'Steve Higgs never fails to deliver. I thought I had this all figured out, but 'Bam!' he got me again and this time I can truly say I was shocked by the ending.'

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.

Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

Great writing in a suspenseful procedural mystery. The characters are engaging, the action entertaining. Figured out the twist early on, but it did not detract from the story. In fact, it added to the angst as I had begun to like D. S. Heaton and Long. Looking forward to more of their adventures.

I love mysteries of all types, and I especially enjoy a mystery with an ending I didn’t see coming, and boy was this a surprise. This is a great story with an amazing plot. The characters are developed and authentic.

I am a great fan of Steve Higgs, especially the Patricia and Albert series’s. I thoroughly enjoyed the “grittier” story line for a refreshing change. After reading the epilogue, can you guess which I’ll start reading tonight? Thank you Steve!!

Well written, engaging, and it will keep you up late trying to find out just who is behind the cover up. I never saw the end coming - never even looked that way. There is never a dull moment, no slowing down as the story and the detectives relentlessly track down the answers to what really happened to the boy who went missing seven years ago.

The writing is masterful and shows the versatility and imagination of Steve Higgs.

Started slow and picked up in the middle. It's definitely part of a bigger story. Good character descriptions and actions. British police narative.

As usual, Steve Higgs delivered. What a great read! I usually can guess the killer well before it's revealed but Steve got me. Wow! Well done Steve Higgs! You never disappoint.

I like a good mystery novel and this was exactly that!

There were just enough twists and turns to keep me guessing all the way to the end, along with believable characters and a genuinely likeable protagonist.

This is a great opening novel to the series and the author has taken steps to compel the reader to continue on to the next, which is what I'm about to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars The start of a promising series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 24, 2024
Good story, good characters . Only 4 stars? My only gripe became clear on reading Steve's note at the end. This was originally a short story. That explained the need for padding. I found the constant repetition of the facts and the character's thoughts a bit annoying and spoiled what was basically a good 'who done it' - although I had worked it out early on (smarty pants me)!
I'm looking forward to the rest of the books as they will be planned as full novels from the start.

Totally engrossing all through. A bit different to his other books in that there is little humour, which I would have thought I’d miss more. It is still totally absorbing with great plot twists.
Only complaint - the next book about these two detectives is said to be coming out in July 2025 - not sure I can wait that long!
