Monstrous Power (Shadowblood Souls Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 3,684 ratings

The truth has come to light... but can I ever trust my men again?

After weeks of cruel hostility, the guys I swore to save know how wrong they were—at least about what I did four years ago. Now that they've seen my horrifying new power, will they decide I'm an enemy after all?

With what they put me through, I'm not sure I even want to stick with them. These brutal men aren't the boys I fell in love with anymore.

But nothing matters more than learning how to control my own vicious urges. So I'll accept a tentative truce while we hunt down more answers... by turning to the very monsters our creator feared most.

Fun, Angsty, and Exciting
5 out of 5 stars
Fun, Angsty, and Exciting
4.5⭐️- Rounding up because I’m so glad Riva made those men BEG! I love this book!! Monstrous Power starts with a bang, picking right where Shattered Vow ended (which was in the midst of absolute madness). Riva grapples to figure out her horrific power, the relationships with her guys, and her place in the world all while constantly running for her life. The drama, the angst, the tension, the action, the demons, the spice- it’s all so good! The crew is on the run so there is lots of journeying happening- but this time there are some unexpected allies tagging along. Riva and her guys decide to seek out and team up with the monsters they were bred to hunt in order to learn more about themselves and their powers. The new characters add some complexity to the story that’s very intriguing- I can’t wait to see what comes next. Riva had strained relationships which her 4 guys after the events of Shattered Vow- and I love the pacing and development of those relationships. They beg, they grovel, and they have to WORK for forgiveness. It’s delicious. I love this series so much and am so excited to read the rest in the future!! Brace yourself, this one ends on a pretty gnarly cliff hanger

I knew it. I knew it. I knew it! I had a feeling and I'm glad it came through. Although, I'm not entirely sure it's a good thing for Riva

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This one is a 5/5 on my trauma scale, so hold your horses!

Riva and her men have found some answers, but not nearly as many as they hoped. The search for more, takes them around the country; meanwhile they’re all trying to come to terms with who and what they are, and what they’ve done.

This book has a pretty big connection with the author’s other series set in the Shadowblood world, but it’s not too spoilery to read if you haven’t yet read that series.
There’s a lot going on in this book, with emotions riding high. We do get to see some redemption arcs, and a few intriguing revelations.
It is the second in series, and yes you absolutely need to have read the first- it’s not a standalone by any means.
It’s told from multiple points of view (each hero gets a turn or two, plus the heroine), features a couple of spicy scenes, and plenty of action scenes.
All in all, it’s a rollicking ride, where our heroes really don’t get much chance for rest!
An engrossing read for urban fantasy fans, and those who’ve enjoyed other books by the author.

A lot is going on here and not a lot of answers to be honest. The shadow kind are not to be expected and Riva and her men don’t fit in. I really was going to expect them to be kind to them and they were not welcoming in the least. Riva and her men flit from place to place searching and being tracked somehow. Then they find this guy and he’s going to help them of course. Cool. But they also learn about others like themselves and they want to rescue them. But naturally they go to rescue some of them without having done any recognizance nor having gotten any handle on their abilities. The people needing rescuing need you at your best, not your inept. Like. And then I saw this coming, the ending, since book 1. I knew it. I long suspected.

I’m not sure I have it in me to continue it was a bit frustrating in that nothing substantial is going on and they are constantly running. But it will be interesting to see how Jacob takes this but I just dunno. Hence the 3. I’m middle of the road for this one.

I almost always wait until a whole series is finished before I read… specifically since I know the cliffies are coming.

While this book has the *delicious* groveling wet know and love, the entire first and second book had me really hoping and wishing for a particular thing that sooort of happened here at the end. So my heart jumped up to my throat and then took an Olympic dive down to my stomach knowing I’ll have to wait months to find out what happens.

    And.. SPOILER:

I was hoping and praying the death was part of the deception. Eva delivers them HEA I crave so I really had a feeling when no one saw an actual body…… If he is really a bad guy (not being manipulated), or a fake and not able to rejoin them all for a big happy family SO HELP ME I WILL do something drastic. Like cry. It will rip my guts out. HAVE MERCY Queen Eva I need him back in the Riva gang all happy and healthy. I believe in you!

What I did like of this book was 5/5, so it was hard to rate overall because it wasn’t a 3/5 but not quiet a 4/5. Cliffhanger- there’s a third book. But the first book in the series was brutal, it wasn’t just bully but literal torture. I was hoping for some groveling and was super curious to see what our author would write to convince us to forgive the guys. We didn’t get a whole lot of satisfying groveling, just apologies. I mean that’s great they realize they were wrong and are sorry now but it seemed shallow….Like the characters were at a loss themselves if they could even atone for something so vicious, and I felt that. I wasn’t totally convinced and neither were they. The “reason” they realized they were wrong at the end of the last book was a shocking event but didn’t really connect to the sudden guilt. It just seems a little disharmonious. Love the authors other work and will read the next book but this one was a bit of a search for plausibility in the relationship dynamics (as much as there is in a fantasy novel lol).

Riva and the guys have found out that they aren’t human and they decide to look for the monsters to learn more about themselves and to get help with their talents. Riva struggles with her feelings for the guys and trying to find a way to forgive them for what they put her through in book 1.

I love Arica and how complex her emotions are. She knows there are varying shades of grey with each person and she works through her hurt and is drawn to the boys she used to love and I just love reading her journey with them.

That ending was mean, but I’m hoping it is what I think it is (trying to be super vague! No spoilers!!!)
And I am hoping for a big fat HEV in the next book!

I absolutely loved this book. Riva is a strong mc and her guys will do anything to get Riva to forgive them and to have it the way it should be. I love how Riva didn’t give in too them right away. This book and characters definitely gave me all the feels. I am completely hooked on this series. The characters are amazing and I definitely need the next book ASAP especially how this book ended.

At first, I found it a bit boring. It was the same thing - Riva being mad with Jake and Drey, than them getting together, then a bunch of things happening. However... Folks, the ending was out of this world. I haven't been able to close my mouth yet.
