Shifting Seas: A Novella Set in the Dragon-Ridden World (Dragon Ridden Chronicles Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 588 ratings

Intrigue on the high seas

Jost has been many things over the course of his life. Pirate captain. Spy. Even a gentleman at one point. He is a chameleon capable of sliding into any skin. He lets nothing get in his way when it comes to completing the mission.

Sent to the far northern seas on an important task for the empire, Jost chases a dangerous enemy. As his crew grows increasingly mutinous, Jost is up against the edge as he races to confront the specters of his past, even as a stranger watches his every move from the shadows. It’ll take more than luck and cunning to survive on these rough seas.

Note: This is a prequel novella set in the world of the Dragon-Ridden world before the events of book one. It was previously released for free through the author’s blog.

Writing is my first love. Even before I could read or put coherent sentences down on paper, I would beg the older kids to team up with me for the purpose of crafting ghost stories to share with our friends. This first writing partnership came to a tragic end when my coauthor decided to quit a day later and I threw my cookies at her head. This led to my conclusion that I worked better alone. Today, I stick with solo writing, telling the stories that would otherwise keep me up at night.

Most days (and nights) are spent feeding my tea addiction while defending the computer keyboard from my feline companions, Loki and Odin.

‘Shifting Seas’ is a very short prequel novella from T.A. White’s Dragon Ridden Chronicles. Written from the perspective of Jost, the pirate ship captain who rescued Tate, it details the events leading up to Tate joining his crew. It is fairly short, less than an hour read for me, and I enjoyed hearing more about Jost and the crew of the Marauder. But! Why leave things unresolved at the end of the book? I don’t even remember reading a resolution through the main books in the series which is disappointing. I still liked it, but recommend you read it immediately preceding Book 1, Dragon-Ridden, or like I did, after finishing the series.

3.5 out of 5 stars! Rounded up to 4 stars.

‘Shifting Seas’ is a prequel story to the Dragon Ridden Chronicles by T.A. White. As of July 2022, the series consist of:

Book 0.5: Shifting Seas (Prequel written from Jost’s POV)
    Book 1: Dragon-Ridden
Book 2: Of Bone and Ruin
    Book 3: Destruction’s Ascent
Book 4: Secrets Bound by Sand
    Book 5: Where Dragons Collide

I enjoyed this short story. I have read all the other books in this series and this should have been read earlier but I still wanted to see the first meeting with the Captain, just was too short.

I've finally read this although I read the first two books around the time that the second book came out. The fourth book in the series is now out, so I decided to read this prequel. I liked learning more about Jost a lot and seeing these first interactions with Tate. It makes me want a re-read of the series, so I'm thinking I'll do just that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably best for those who've already read Dragon Ridden

If you read and enjoyed Dragon Ridden, then this will add a nice bit of early detail and information around that book. It's certainly made me want to go and read it again - I'll look at Jost and his crew quite differently now I know they knew what Tate was from the beginning. A quick, engaging read
