What was supposed to be a fleeting indulgence turns into an undeniable pull neither can ignore. They understand the demands, the late nights, the sacrifices—but for the first time, they’re wondering if work is all there is.

214—that’s the number of times Kelly Kay has seen When Harry Met Sally. The other day, someone called her an "Adult Content" Nora Ephron. Who knew #goals could come true?

Kelly is the author of several interconnected romcom series and some standalone romances. They’re witty, urbane, wildly funny, heartbreaking, emotional happily ever afters because nothing’s better than a belly laugh and an ugly cry. And a whole lot of kissing.

Chicago-based writer (Go Cubs!), with her roots in Pennsylvania (Sorry Phillies, I married a Cub-loving man), married to a writer, mother of a creative dynamo of a fourteen-year-old boy, and currently a little sleepy. She’s highly organized and a chaotic mess all at once, and loves lipstick as much as Chuck Taylors. And most likely has either a glass of wine or a cup of coffee in her hand right now.

Workaholics find time for love; hilarious but angsty romance
Tess is a romance writer who doesn’t believe romance exists in reality. Alex is a bipartisan political podcaster who refuses to sacrifice his career. They have an undeniable instant connection, but since they’re both married to their jobs, their non-relationship is the side piece to their daily life. Her days are packed with book deadlines and touring. He’s in the middle of an election season. When they’re together it’s perfect, but it’s finding the time in their crazy schedules that’s the problem. ••• I cannot tell you how much I loved this book! It had hilarious, truly laugh-out-loud moments paired with heartbreaking, my-throat-feels-tight angst. Alex and Tess have electric chemistry, but they’re also such complex, imperfect and relatable characters that you really root for each of them. Plus, I actually really enjoyed reading this in the midst of our recent insane election season. It felt timely, but drama-free (as far as politics go).

Just when I didn't know I could love your work more, I discovered I could and I do! This stand alone is wonderful -- it really is! This weekend, while buried in snow I managed to read 4 books of yours! Please don't ask to identify which one I enjoyed the most because I can't! I am so excited for #5 to hit my Kindle!!! I may have to put it down long enough to clean up the kitchen though. Lol. Thank you for sharing Side Piece!

🖊️Tess, a successful romance author and Alex, a political journalist and podcaster, meet at a bar one evening, and the chemistry is strong.

✈️Instead of the one night stand, and an agreement to meet in a few weeks time, the pair can’t stay away from each other, arranging to meet up as their hectic schedules allow.

❤️Both Alex and Tess are married to their work, but as the relationship evolves, the question is whether they can allow themselves to put their own happiness first.

📚Kelly Kay’s writing sizzles as hot as the sparks between Tess and Alex, and the characters come alive with her words. The story is all about exploring emotions, history and the powerful pull of love and I could picture the pair so clearly. I love the side characters and the banter, and if you have read and enjoyed Kelly’s other work, you will love to catch up with this story. ❤️

Insta love for me! The writing is everything with this book from the meeting of minds, to the dialogue to the story. You are immediately immersed in Tess and Alex’s attraction to each other and it’s off to the races as to how fast you can read. I devoured this book. No skimming, since there were no boring parts. They’re adults and have interesting lives. You get their back stories through quick moments where their current realities are impacted. I can’t wait to read more Kelly Kay books!

This is a very well written examination of the extraordinary goals and values of our times. In the end , all lifestyle choices are examined with honesty and candor. In my opinion , this results in a very important examination of the stressors of our time. This is an important read.
    Thank you, Kelly.

Kelly Kay is a new to me author and I have to say, I LOVED how her writing swept me up and made everything else disappear. I literally devoured this book.

Side Piece was an interesting trope I rarely see in romance. Alex and Tess are both workaholics and after a chance encounter at a hotel bar, both of them can't deny their chemistry. What follows is a whirlwind of sexy times and the absolute BEST witty banter I've ever read. They both agree to be "side pieces" since they're married to their jobs. Tess is a best selling author and Alex is a political podcaster. Living in different cities and having jam-packed schedules, how will these two make anything work?

The dynamics of their relationship was intriguing. I adored how they made time in their schedules to see each other. A lot of their interactions involved sexy times, but they did have awesome conversations. They definitely had good communication at first, but as more feelings came into the picture everything fell apart. While Tess seemed devoted to their unusual arrangement, Alex was held back by a past relationship that ruined his opinion of them, not to mention his views on what his father gave up for love. He really REALLY ticked me off at one point. I did not blame Tess for her reaction.

I dropped a star because of the drama. This book has a separation of the couple for months (not too brief ~ MONTHS) and the MMC sleeps with other women (not detailed, just mentioned). Yes, they are separated and there's no hope of them getting back together at that time (to them) but as a reader I KNEW they were going to get back together so that bothered me, especially knowing Alex still cared for Tess. It broke my heart. Literally. If you can handle that, then it shouldn't take away from the story for you. I develop bonds with characters so I feel emotions beyond what I'm reading lol I have to be honest as a reviewer. That ONE thing was a "me thing," (sorry Kelly!) and while it did bother me, I cannot deny my love for this book.

Side Piece was fast-paced, unique, steamy, funny, witty, and emotional. I was expecting a bit of a romcom, contemporary romance and while I got that I also got so much more. The side characters, mainly Mikey and Ari, were GOLD. Loved them to pieces (especially that epilogue! Lol). Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was exactly what I needed amidst so many dark romances I've read recently.

The chemistry of the FMC and the MMC is so good, and the banter is witty and at times laugh out loud funny. If you want a book that can take you away from your day to day - with all the feels and a happy ending - this is it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Kelly Kay does it again

I’ve become a big fan of Kelly Kay, and with every book of hers read, she proves to me time and again that my admiration is well founded. Side Piece is the fast-paced story of Tess and Alex, two workaholics caught up in a sizzling attraction that catches fire after a one night stand… and keeps smouldering even while separated (these two give good phone… ahem!). Ms. Kay has done it again with a sensual, often funny, and at times, heartfelt read. Oh, and she really should consider teaching a master class in the art of writing such scorching hot love scenes. Yowza.
