A rather steamy family drama

A rather steamy family drama
The Sisters by Kate Forster was just the palate cleanser I needed from all the *more* serious books I have been reading lately. There are serious topics, but enough humor as well that overall this book has a lighthearted feel to it. What it's about: The 25-year-old de Santoval triplets have drifted apart. Violetta is a party girl that just got on a reality TV series, Carlotta is a popular horse trainer that loves her horses more than anything else (maybe even her family), and Grace works in an auction house and has a terrible secret she has been hiding from everyone. The girls must come together again when their father Leon disappears and leaves their mom Birdie lying unconscious in their bathroom. This family may be wealthy, but all their secrets and lies are about to come out. I really enjoyed this book! It was a fast read and actually reminded me a bit of She Regrets Nothing by Andrea Dunlop due to it having to do with a wealthy family in New York. It is also filled with lots of family drama, and lots about fashion and art which was very enjoyable and interesting to read about. One thing I wasn't quite expecting was how much sex is in it. It's nothing too descriptive, but I wasn't expecting it all the same. The sex scenes are short though, and since they aren't very detailed I didn't mind reading them (usually I really don't like sex in books). The real focus was on the family and their fashion brand Pajaro which Birdie started. The Sisters switches from present which is 2017 and past which ends up being 1980-2010. It also switches between a few characters including the triplets, Birdie, Birdie's friend Spencer, and Leon. There are also other character perspectives throughout, and this is mostly done throughout the chapters as opposed to each chapter or chunk always being just one character's perspective. This normally bothers me but it worked for me in this book. For some reason, I ended up having a hard time keeping the triplets straight though and wrote myself notes about them so I would remember who had what characteristics. I thought the characters had pretty distinct voices though, so this might have just been a personal problem. I just read a book with tons of characters and was fine, but for some reason I couldn't keep the 3 girls straight. The only thing that was weird for me with this book was that even though the girls were born in the United States and the book is set there, the author would use language like "jumper" and "mum" and other words that aren't distinct to the US. It didn't really bother me but it did come across as odd to me. Also, Birdie is from Georgia but I didn't find her voice to really seem like she was from there. The author lives in Australia so I'm thinking that is the reason behind this, but I feel that if you are going to write a book set in the US you should use the language for the US and not for other countries. Final Thought: I laughed a lot during the book, but I also cried as well. It ended up being a very emotional novel even though it had a lighthearted feel. I loved seeing the triplets coming into their own, and finding out what they were supposed to be doing with their lives and where they belonged. If you are looking for a novel full of laughter and drama with a dose of emotion I would definitely recommend checking out The Sisters!

This is an engaging novel where the 3 sisters and their mother share a loving bond, tears and laughter, drama and loving relationships. You will laugh and cry alongside the characters as this book pulls you in and you share the emotions. A truly wonderful read. Thankyou Kate Forster

I loved the book. The storyline was new and it was very well written. However, I didn't care for the vulgar language and the raunchy sex scenes. I've read similar books that were just as good without them.

An interesting plot, but the sexual conversation and sexual descriptions were too graphic and yet repetitive. The 3 sisters (triplets) were flawed characters but you felt they could "make it". I skimmed over the graphic parts.

What a great family story. Pride, jealousy and deceit all in one book. The love of a family can withstand anything.

Entertaining writing! Her writing keeps me very engaged. Each new book and its characters have their own identity and descriptions. The locations are so vivid and transition well from one to another. Even her short stories in the Smitten series are fully evolved characters. Just love her!

The young and gifted de Santoval triplets have been brought up in a world of fashion, money and privilege. Over the years the three have drifted apart, with Carlotta immersing herself in the horsey set, Grace in the art and auction house business, and Violetta in the party girl, reality TV life style.  When their father Leon, does the bunk with his long term mistress, and their mother Birdie is found unconscious and in a coma, the three sisters are reunited. Unaccustomed to adversity, the sisters must work together to rebuild their family business, and deal with family issues, support their ill mother, and maybe find love on the way.The characters are a little annoying in parts, somewhat believable in others, with a few relatable traits in each. With loads of sex, fashion, art and fun, "The Sisters" by Kate Forster is a wonderfully light read, suitable for days by the pool, weekend reading, and an escape from daily routine.  Good fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Riot of Wealth, Sex, Fashion, Art, Horses and Bad Behavior
Reviewed in Australia on February 10, 2019
The Sisters by Kate Forster is riot of wealth, sex, fashion, art, horses and bad behavior. Triplets Violetta, Carlotta and Grace have dysfunctional relationships with each other and with their ruthless father, Leon, head of the Pajaro fashion house. When their mother lies in a coma after an accident and their father disappears, the sisters are forced to confront their mutual and individual histories. Secrets creep into the open creating turmoil and angst.
The self-centered triplets become far more likeable as they acknowledge their issues and try to change. Their mother, Birdie, sits at the center of it all, a loveable, kind matriarch.
In this light but gripping tale, Kate proves a dab hand at writing conflict, romance and showing character growth. If you are looking for a rollicking read with heart, this is the one.
