Sisters at War: The utterly heartbreaking World War 2 historical novel by Jina Bacarr (The Wartime Paris Sisters Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,507 ratings

'A moving novel of strength and resistance in the face of evil but also an inspiring journey of resilience after loss' Erin Litteken

Paris, 1940: Two sisters separated by the Nazis… After a devastating attack, Justine and Ève Beaufort find themselves on opposite sides of the war, both in their beloved Paris. But can they ever find their way back to each other?

It was the day that changed everything. When the Nazis broke into our home, destroying everything, taking our home and our security. I thought it couldn’t get worse. But then they also took my sister.

After that day nothing was the same. I thought I’d never see her again. I thought she was lost to me forever. I joined the Resistance, vowing to fight against the evil German army with every last spark of fire in my body. Nothing and nobody can stop me.

Until I catch a glimpse of a woman who looks just like my sister. Alive. But this is not the sweet darling girl I once knew. This is a platinum blonde happily conversing with a terrifying Gestapo officer. No longer my sister. But a traitor.

And I know what I must now do…

Gripping, heartbreaking, historical fiction, set in Nazi-occupied Paris – perfect for fans of The Nightingale and All the Light We Cannot See.

A good book, but some vocabulary issues. Apparently the proofreaders & editors aren't very particular about their jobs! Still, the storyline is good enough. The subject is WWII & the Holocaust, but from a different POV than most other books. This time from two French young ladies rather than the Jews or other ethnic groups targeted by the Nazi monsters. There's a huge cliffhanger so I'm eager to start the 2nd book in this series! Very much recommended!

I found it sad and cannot imagine being afraid to stand up for myself if it meant hurting family. WW2 was more that just the battlefield!

The story line had great promise but some of the writing is trite. Silly to use French phrases when the reader knows all the characters are speaking French.
The ending was not a good one. Is this a way to encourage a sequel?

I did enjoy the book but get upset when this is Book 1. I did not know that and of course it ends abruptly. I go to get Book 2 and it’s not in kindle format. I go on my Libby library site and they don’t have it. My advice is to forget Book 2’s. Finish the book in one version . Frustrated.

The story of two sisters who are caught in the mire of Paris after the surrender of France in the initial days of occupation of WW II. Justine and Eve are fighting on the same side, resistance but one is seen as a collaborator and the other is an active member of the Resistance. They are both keeping secrets from one another to protect their Maman and Ninette. Come along and read the story of women who always did to help free their country from the Third Reich when they could while protecting those they loved.

I absolutely loved this book, I enjoyed it very much, however, I was really disappointed at the end. Maybe there is to be another book, in which case that all makes sense. I have so many questions which were left unanswered !!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Two Sisters Separaby War
Reviewed in Canada on May 14, 2024
This novel was told from the point of view of two sisters (Justine and Eve) who loved each other dearly but due to the circumstances of war, were pulled apart and lost communication with each other. It does include sexual attacks that may be triggering to some. The story alternated between the voices of the two sisters and gave a realistic picture of what the situation was in France at that time. It made me sad that Eve, the younger sister, could so easily question the ethics of her sister Justine and didn't take into account her personal knowledge of her character. It was an intriguing book and I suspect from the ending that there will be a sequel. I received a copy of this as an advance read from Netflix, but also purchased a copy for myself.
