Sleigh Bells Ring: A Sapphic Romance Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 788 ratings

For Nicole Robinson, Christmas means returning to the family home in Hebden Bridge with her sister Beth and their brother Liam, who has lived with permanent delays since a childhood accident. Though Beth and Nicole have grown up and moved away, every December the Robinson kids reunite for a month of family and festive traditions.
One tradition, however, has always stood out: the mysterious source of the sleigh bells they’ve heard every Christmas for as long as they can remember. The magic of it all keeps them searching year after year, convinced the answer is just one clever plan—or perhaps something more magical—away.

And while the Robinson household is brimming with holiday cheer, Nicole’s love life is anything but merry. Every year, like clockwork, she finds herself single by Christmas—dumped by one girlfriend after another who can't handle the intense month-long family tradition. This year is no different, and Beth has even made her an Advent calendar to track her sister’s inevitable seasonal breakups. But a familiar face from the Robinsons' past begs to ask if maybe, just maybe, Nicole’s luck is about to change.

Niamh, a childhood friend of Liam’s and the only one who stayed by his side after the accident, has returned to Hebden Bridge. A decade away has turned her into a stunning Irish woman with raven hair and sparkling green eyes, and as the scent of hot chocolate fills the air, she stirs something warm and unexpected in Nicole.

Can Niamh fit into the Robinson family’s quirky Christmas traditions, or will this holiday romance end like all the others? As sleigh bells ring and festive cheer fills the air, Nicole just might discover that the real meaning of Christmas isn’t in the mystery of the bells, but in the magic of love.

Alyson Root is the sapphic author I read The most this. That's saying something. I adored this novel. Usually in slow burn novels I want the story to take its time unfolding.

Not with this. I could not wait to read the next page. I wanted slow burn but I wanted sincere romance. I got that burn..

The Robinson have a unique tradition where they spend then entire month of December with each other. For them, and the myriad of neighbors they have this seems to works fine

Their oldest daughter, Nicole, had has terrible luck with women. This tradition ended many relationships she had. She also has a younger sister that almost always seems to get the better of her older sis. I never had any siblings, much less a sister , so I'm not sure if this is generally how it is but it a great addition to the novel. Their younger brother is also a wonderful, childlike character.

Alyson paces this story just right. Before long Nicole meets Niamh, a woman she knew years ago before she moved away to make a life of her own. And was successful at. And the sparks fly. Maybe too good at first. There is sex and there is heartfelt romance.Still.... well just read it.

At least this hopeless romantic thinks so.

And then those sleigh bells- each year the Robinson kids hear then, first on December 19th. This year is no different. But where are they coming from? Who is doing this? It has to be their Mum. But how?

There's a humorous incident involving a roof but please read to find out about that. Each year these kids, no longer kids, put great effort into finding the source of these bells.

Alyson does a cool job of creating a fun mystery in this unforgettable romance.

    Highly recommend.

This is one of my top reads ever. It has a coveted place on my “Read Again” shelf!

Alyson Root is an amazing artist. Her storytelling abilities are amazing. Not to mention the characters she created, Nicole and Niamh, are two of the favorite characters I have read; and I read a lot! They are smart (mostly! haaa), wonderful, fun and incredibly sexy. The side characters are amazing as well. It’s even more special that she based some of the characters and Christmas celebrations on events from her own life. This is a fantastic book. Do not miss out!

Like the perfect cup of spiked eggnog, this Christmas story hit the spot. It has the usual tropes you expect. Plus adds a dash of mystery, high jinks, slapstick, athletic and acrobatic hookups, an expansive definition of family, and enough good cheer and Happy-Ever-After for all. This story was fun and a joy to read. It leaves you feeling happy and satisfied. Will add it to my reading list to get in the holiday mood every December.
I also listened to the audiobook. I'd advise earbuds/headphones if you're not alone. Lillia Green did a great job as narrator. But if I could ask Santa for one more thing... More of Niamh's Irish brogue please!!!

I am not one for romantic Christmas movies, but I would watch this one every year. Since it’s not a movie, I will be reading this book every year around Christmas time. Absolutely beautiful. I fell in love with the characters. I absolutely love the family, and the story is very heartwarming and perfect for this time of year.

Lovely story of Christmas and the importance of prioritizing family. My only complaint is that the mystery is left unsolved. For many readers that is the magic of the story.

This could really be a fun Christmas movie filled with beautiful family traditions, siblings that fight but really love each other, and a rendezvous with all grown children for the entire month of December. I haven't read that before in a book! The main characters, Nic and Nim, have a sweet and sexy love story and I also loved the innocence of brother Liam. The bells are a fun mystery which leads to many shenanigans. The writing is loving and so humorous. It will definitely put the reader in a holiday mood!

Great book; fully evolved characters, just enough comedy to go along with the drama, good editing! That is a trifecta in my book. I made the mistake of starting this around midnight, to just read for a few minutes before bed. Ended up finishing it at 4am. Oh well, what can you do? I did like that the book wasn’t quite your normal HEA story. Not trying to spoil anything, they get there in the end of course, but the road is a little crooked and there were a couple of things that make you go “hmmm”. Overall, highly recommend.

This book is very sweet. I enjoyed the characters and the mystery of the bells. Parts were a little frustrating and cold have done with a bit more detail but I hope there will more from them. Even short novellas. All in all a cute cozy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicole & Niamh
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 5, 2024
I’m trying to become less of a grinch this year by reading lots of Christmas themed sapphic romances (that’s my excuse) Im a fan of Alyson Root’s work and the author has come up with a novel storyline involving the quirky Robinson family of Hebden Bridge, a town famously known as ‘the lesbian capital of the U.K.’
Nicole is a firefighter who comes home on December 1st and, as family tradition dictates, will stay until Christmas Day, minus her most recent in a long line of girlfriends who doesn’t understand why Nicole has to spend nearly a month with her family. Also returning to the town after 10 years away is beautiful Irish woman Niamh, also recently having split from a controlling girlfriend. Nic & Niamh are wildly attracted to each other but, despite some bouts of intimidatingly athletic and acrobatic ‘intimacy’, a third party causes some angsty potential ‘spanner in the works’ moments, before they realise they mean more to each other than just the amazing s.e.x. A cast of fun supporting characters helps the story along but I’m not sure what the ‘mystery’ of the sleigh bells had to do with anything really, apart from providing the book title. It doesn’t spoil what is an overall delightful, cold winter’s night cockle warmer. Do I feel less of a grinch having read it….? Maybe a little. Would I spend the whole month of December with my family…? No way!!
