Story of My Life (Story Lake Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 26,929 ratings

A Gilmore Girls meets Schitt’s Creek redemption romcom.

Hazel Hart was a successful romance novelist until a breakup drives her straight into writer’s block. Having failed (and failed some more) to deliver her new manuscript, she’s hiding from the world behind a wall of old takeout containers until her publisher lays down the law. If she misses her next deadline it’s The End.

Desperate for inspiration, Hazel impulse-buys a historic home online and flees Manhattan to tiny Story Lake, PA. Upon her dramatic arrival—involving an incident with a bald eagle—she discovers the charm of her new home may have been
slightly exaggerated.

The house is a wreck and the town is struggling after their biggest employer shut down. Also, since her raccoon-infested home came with a seat on the town council our introverted heroine is stuck with a front row seat to all the small-town shenanigans.

But Hazel isn’t worried. Not since all six-feet-three inches of grouchy contractor Campbell Bishop slapped a bandage on her forehead and unintentionally inspired the heck out of her. There’s only one thing to do: Hire Cam and his equally gorgeous brothers to renovate her new spider museum…er…house.

Okay two things. A fake date for “research purposes” will really put her work-in-progress on track. Before Hazel knows it, she’s writing a romance novel
and living one. At least until the drywall dust settles, the town she’s falling in love with faces bankruptcy, and growly Cam remembers why he can’t live happily ever after.

A Five Star Love Letter

A Five Star Love Letter
Lucy Score has done it again! Story of My Life isn’t just a book—it’s an experience, a world you want to live in, and a love story that takes root in your heart. From the very first page, I was hooked, completely swept away by the charm of Story Lake and the irresistible, sharp-witted, fiercely independent Hazel Hart. Hazel is everything. Strong but vulnerable, guarded yet overflowing with heart, she’s the kind of heroine you root for with every fiber of your being. And then there’s the romance—sweet, slow-burning, and electric in the way only Lucy Score can deliver. The chemistry? Off the charts. The banter? Pure gold. The emotional depth? It wrecked me in the best way. And then there’s Campbell Bishop—the grumpiest, sexiest, most deliciously broody hero I’ve ever had the pleasure of rooting for. His gruff exterior, hidden vulnerabilities, and undeniable chemistry with Hazel made every interaction pure gold. Watching him slowly unravel, let his guard down, and fall so deeply had me grinning, swooning, and clutching my heart at the same time. But what truly made this book next level was the entire Bishop family—every single one of them stole my heart. Their dynamic, their love, their fierce loyalty—it added so much warmth and depth to the story. They weren’t just background characters; they were the kind of family you wish you could be adopted into. And I have to give a huge shoutout to Zoey, Hazel’s best friend and agent, because I adored her. She was everything you could ever want in a best friend—supportive, hilarious, brutally honest, and always in Hazel’s corner. Their friendship was so real and full of love, and Zoey’s unwavering belief in Hazel made my heart swell. Every time she was on the page, I knew I was in for a perfect blend of sass, wisdom, and the kind of ride-or-die loyalty that makes a book even more special. But it’s not just the romance that makes this book so special. Story Lake itself is a character—quirky, cozy, full of life and unforgettable townspeople that make you want to pack your bags and move there immediately. Every detail, every scene, every moment felt alive. It’s more than just a setting, it’s a place that feels like home. The town, the quirky side characters, the small-town charm—it all came together to create a world I never wanted to leave. I wanted so badly to finish this book, but at the same time, I never wanted it to end. That’s the magic of Lucy Score—she gives you a story so unputdownable, so deeply immersive, that you feel homesick for it the moment you turn the last page. If you love small-town romance, heart-tugging storytelling, grumpy-sunshine perfection, and characters that live and breathe on the page and heroines who steal your heart, Story of My Life is an absolute must-read. Five stars aren’t enough—I’d give it a hundred if I could!

I absolutely loved this book! Even though it’s over 500 pages, it flew by—it was such an easy and enjoyable read. The witty banter between Cam and Hazel had me laughing out loud more than once. Hazel, in particular, felt incredibly relatable. Her quirks, vulnerabilities, and determination made her feel like someone you’d want as a friend. The family dynamics added a wonderful layer to the story—both heartwarming and humorous—and gave real emotional depth to the characters.

I also adored the small-town setting. The sense of community was so strong and charming; it made the world of the book feel cozy and real. I sincerely hope there’s a sequel—I’d love to spend more time with these characters and see where their journey takes them next!

Lucy Score delivers another heartwarming small town romance with Story of My Life, blending the charm of Gilmore Girls with the quirkiness of Schitt’s Creek. This is a love letter to her readers, and you can totally tell. I felt it was a more grown up and refined version of her past books, but still has that signature small town charm and banter (and of course, spice) that Lucy Score is known for. If you love a grumpy contractor falling first for a sunshine FMC in a town full of eccentric yet lovable characters, this book is for you!

Hazel Hart is at a crossroads—recently divorced, struggling with writer’s block, and on the verge of losing her publishing deal. In a moment of impulsivity, she buys a fixer upper in a tiny Pennsylvania town, hoping the change of scenery will rekindle her creative spark. What she doesn’t anticipate is Cam Bishop, the broody and rugged contractor tasked with helping her renovate. Their dynamic? Fake dating for “research” purposes that quickly starts feeling way too real.

Lucy Score excels at crafting vibrant small town settings, and this one is no exception. The town is delightfully oddball, complete with endearing townsfolk, a bald eagle named Goose who has a penchant for tricking people, and a strong sense of found family. Cam’s large, tight knit family stole the show for me—I already want books about his brothers!

As for the romance, it took me a bit to warm up to the chemistry between Hazel and Cam. Hazel is easy to love—witty, determined, and full of heart. Cam, on the other hand, takes the grump factor very seriously, which made him harder to connect with at first. But once he starts falling? Oh, it’s game over. The tension, the reluctant softening, and the undeniable pull between them kept me hooked.

With a just right level of spice, Story of My Life is a slow burn, fake dating, opposites attract romance that delivers plenty of banter, heart, and sweet moments. If you’re a fan of small town rom coms with a grumpy sunshine trope done right, this one’s perfect!

I have enjoyed other titles by this author but Story of my Life is The.Best.Ever!!!!

The characters are ALL excellent, the small town setting is comfortable, and Heart House sounds delightful. The HEA story is simultaneously poignant and LOL hilarious! (And steamy; soooo steamy!)

But beyond this reader being titillated, entertained and emotionally engaged, the author earns my Mad Respect for empathetic and realistic inclusion of diversity and disability with accommodations situations!!! This story is fun and funny but goes way beyond frivolous fluff,

Soooo looking forward to book 2 in the series!! Also, don't miss out on the Bonus addition to this first book, where the author reveals a similar real life experience. However, even the bonus left me wondering . . . If even more of Hazel's story was autobiographical of the author?!?!?

What a cast of characters! I had heard so many things about this book before reading it, and honestly, most of them rang true. I found this read to be delightful, lighthearted, entertaining, and ultimately really funny.
I rooted for Hazel and Cam, even though I was slightly disappointed thag this wasn't a book where she could have all three Bishoo brothers 🤣... but it was the everyone, the entire town of Story Lake that won me over 😍.
This book is a big one, and it took me longer to get through than I would have liked, but that happens sometimes. This was my first Lucy Score book, and I will be back for Zoey's story 👀.

I enjoy Lucy Scores books, they are typically fun, lighthearted reads that have humor and heart. Story of My Life was a good, small town read and I loved when the FMC and MMC would fight and the FMC mentions how they are going to communicate and works things out, not be like the hero and heroine of books. It was an enjoyable read and I liked both the main and side characters. The Bishop family is fantastic, Zoey is the best friend we all need and the town is a hoot! This is not a clean book, but it is easy to skip the scenes and not miss plot points or story.

If this is not a Lucy Score love letter to her readers and the romance community than I don’t know what is. This is a delightful easy read filled with her signature grumpy MMC’s, hot mess FMC’s, mad cap small town antics and a swoon worthy happily ever after.

Heading back to her small town roots Lucy Score delivers a charming, funny and heartfelt story of two people each battling their own challenges who discover that the right one can find you even if you’re not looking.

Hazel is a hot mess New York City romance author who impulsively buys a house in a small town after seeing an article featuring Cam and deciding that’s the inspiration she needs to get back writing.

Cam is back home in his small town after a tragedy trying to fix it all and keep it all together. He’s working with his brother and does not want a relationship (until he does).

Secret meet ups develop into real feelings as Cam not only fixes Hazels new house but her inspiration for writing. I loved how Hazel quickly became an integral part of the town and genuinely wanted to fit in and save the town.

The chemistry and banter between Hazel and Cam is off the charts. Classic Lucy Score writing. It’s a book you want to climb into to experience the joy of a small town romance.

The eccentric small town of Story Lake is filled with zany characters (a teenage mayor and a house raccoon called Bertha!!!), a beautiful family and neighbours who support each other. I loved every page and can’t wait for the next story that takes us back to Story Lake!
