Soul of the Crow: YA Dark Fantasy (Reapers of Veltuur Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 94 ratings

A prince on the run. An assassin on his heels. And a death sentence neither of them can escape.

When mortals want someone dead, they summon a Reaper of Veltuur—assassins forged in the underrealm, with death magic coursing through their veins.

Sinisa is one of them.

When the King of Oakfall orders his own daughter executed for a “crime” that should never be punishable by death, Sinisa is the first to accept the contract. It should have been simple. A clean kill. A soul delivered.

But Prince Acari refuses to let his sister die for his father’s cruelty. Fleeing the palace with her at his side, he defies the Reapers and vanishes into the wilds. Now, Sinisa has two choices—hunt them across the mortal lands, or face the wrath of the underrealm for returning empty-handed.

She doesn’t hesitate. No one outruns a Reaper.

Soul of the Crow is a dark young adult fantasy steeped in gothic intrigue, perilous bargains, and an enemies-to-lovers romance set against the backdrop of a ruthless underrealm. Come. Walk the forest of the underrealm and discover what’s lurking there in the shadows.

From the Author

The world is a dark place. There, I've said it.

As a reader, it always bothered me that fantasy worlds were different. Why shouldn't they have characters who are just as messed up as the rest of us? Why would they be built on sunshine and rainbows with little to no consequences for anything. At least, those were the fantasy books I grew up reading, the ones that made me feel even more isolated than I already was.

If you're new to my writing, let me say this upfront: I write dark fantasy. Maybe not as dark as some, and maybe not in the ways that are typical for the genre, but my characters are put through the ringer, my worlds unfair.

Soul of the Crow explores a lot of darkness: grief, trauma, deception, discrimination. If you're looking for a series that will help you forget how broken our own world is, then my books aren't them.

However, if you're looking for characters that you can relate to, ones who have endured as much strife as you, ones who have hardened themselves to the cruelties of the world and still--beyond all odds--have it in themselves to care, then I promise you won't be disappointed.

Sinisa is a dark, sarcastic Reaper who knows her place in the world. She's not ashamed of getting her elbows dirty or of being surrounded by death, but she's also never known anything different.

Acari was raised to believe that his brother would take the throne, until his untimely death. Now, in the midst of his grief, he's having to rethink what his future will look like as King of Oakfall. But he's never prepared for something like this. He's never been allowed to. His father is ashamed of his speech impediment, and he isn't the only child he's ashamed of.

His sister, Gem, is different too. Born with a cleft lip, the laws of the land state that she has been marked by death and should've been killed years ago. And yet, she's survived.

The Reapers of Veltuur series is one of self-discovery, overcoming impossible odds, facing one's fears, and, of course dark magicks and epic adventures. It's a series that may not be for everyone, but for those of you with a little darkness in your soul, you will feel right at home on these pages.

LOVE THIS BOOK 😍😍
4.5 ⭐ I really loved this book 😍 and it's surprised me a lot. This book is about Sinisa, a sixteen years old girl who became a Reaper, then of killing a man. Because, in this fantasy dark world created by Jessica Willis anyone who murder to another person is taking to Veltuur, the place of Reapers and serve for it all his or her existence. But this a great challenge when Sinisa has to complete her task of killing a princess that nobody knows about her, just the King and his son, the Prince Acari. Acari has a mission, to protect her little sister no matter what obstacle he will effort, and Sinisa doesn't want to loose the chance to becoming a Shade taking her 5000th life. Love the world building in this story. And It's very interesting story to read. Definitely if you loved Nervernight this story is for you.

I loved this story. I loved the characters, and I loved the theme of moving past bad things that happen to you. I thought it was really cool how the Guardians were changed Reapers, and I thought it was really interesting how the crows are the people who the reapers killed originally. The concept of the world is really interesting, but the fact that reapers hunted and killed the guardians makes me wonder what god is trying to get ahead and why. What happened to Acari at the end of the book was a good way to end it, and I want to know what happens to him and Sinisa in the next one.

Soul of the Crow was a delightfully dark fantasy centering around a girl who reaps the souls of the dead and a prince determined to protect his sister at all cost. At age 13, Sinisa committed murder and became a reaper of the dead, forced to collect 5000 souls as penance for her deeds. When she’s contracted by the king to reap the soul of his daughter, she is so close to becoming a Shade as she has dreamed of since she was pressed into service. But Sinesa meets her match in Acari, a prince who is determined to save his sister. When Acari escapes her clutches with his sister, So Sinisa’s mission changes, and now she must help Acari if she has any hope of becoming a Shade. But both Sinisa and Acari soon learn that what they know about their world—and themselves—is not what it seems, and that their secrets may put their own souls at risk.
I adored this book. I bought it after seeing it all over the place on IG and I am glad I did. Morally grey and imperfect characters, a unique world and magic system, and dark secrets all culminate into a fantastic story. I loved the whole system of reapers and how well it was built. I also adored Acari and how adorably awkward he was. Soul of the Crow is a super unique and twisty dark fantasy that kept me riveted from the first page, a story about family, redemption and forgiveness. Now I am dying for the sequel. Y’all. Don’t sleep on this book. It’s fantastic. Go read it!

This book was fabulously written. Sinisa is leading lady who forces you to twist your perspective and experience the adventure as if you are truly beside her. I am very much looking forward to the next in series and enjoying the publishing progress that the author shares on her social media accounts. She is definitely an author to follow! I went into this series with my suspicions of how things would play out, but I was surprised and moved by the way the author worked her magic. Here's to book two in just a couple weeks!

Cliff hanger, I hate cliff hangers. Liked the characters, interesting plot, interesting details, but ended as a cliffhanger so others books could follow. Don’t know why authors do this. You can have each book as a separate adventure, with the same characters. I assume each of the books in this series will end this way. Very disappointing. Will avoid books by this author in the future.

I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review, thank you so much to the author for this wonderful read!

This book honestly went so above my expectations. I wasn’t fully sure what this book was going to be like but I’m so happy I read it! Actually, I more devoured it.

It is written in duel perspectives, switching between the prince Acari and the Reaper Sinisa. Reapers are who a mortal turns to when they want someone or some type of life dead. This includes animals and insects. Mortals put in a request with a Reaper who works for the underworld and carry the souls through passing. If a mortal takes a life, they then become a Reaper. This story follows Sinisa as she is contracted to kill the secret princess. Acari, her older brother, refuses to let this happen and runs away with his toddler sister. Sinisa must follow and complete her contract or face her own punishments in the underworld.

The world building of this novel was so well done. I feel like I was so immersed in this world and the characters were really well fleshed out! I was in love with Acari and all his goofy flaws. It made him a really fun character. It really makes his character as a 16 year old prince who was never supposed to be a ruler believable!

Pros and Cons: MAY HAVE MINOR SPOILERS

    Pros:
    1. I loved Sinisa’s story. Having it all fall together and realizing why she is in the position she is was absolutely heartbreaking and eye opening. It really brings into question if a life ever deserves to be taken.
    2. Princess Gem and Prince Acari’s little speech differences really add an almost comical but sad feeling to the story. The fact that even royals can be unwanted and this uneducated is so sad.
    3. The world building was absolutely amazing in this novel. It was really well thought out and every time I questioned something, it was answered within the next few chapters.

    Cons:
    1. Sometimes the dialect was a little off. For example, Sinisa would say something and it would seem weird or like it did not quite match her usual tone. It could be distracting every now and then.
    2. I wasn’t all too surprised with the ending. The story could be a little predictable at times but overall it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story! I think all stories have their areas of being predictable.
    3. It was a bit of a slow start for me. I wasn’t fully sure where the story was going or what exactly was happening. But everything really came together nicely! Just let yourself be confused for a little while.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading what happens next! I highly recommend it to any YA fantasy lovers.

The first few chapters were a bit of info dumping that most of it went over my head. But once you get past that, the book finally kicks in. Interesting world about reapers and how they deal with it.
    Was a good read.
