Sound Off: Carriage House Chronicle 2 (ChiTown Love Stories Book 5) Kindle Edition
Music always tells a story. You just have to find the right note.
Opposites Attract, Enemies to Lovers, Close Proximity, Workplace romance set in the recording industry.
Morgan Sumner is good at two things. Wardrobe choices and telling stories through music. She hears music differently than others. She can take an unfinished chord and create a symphony from it. She runs a recording studio in Chicago with the band Grade Repeated and rules her kingdom with an iron fist. She's produced and engineered pioneers, rookies and journeymen musicians to unprecedented success. She hears a story in their words, notes and voices and guides them to put something new in the world. No one and nothing new enters her world without approval.
Until Wade Howell invades her world with a friendly, happy smile.
He's actually interested in people's days. Morgan doesn't know what to do with someone like that.
Best-selling author Wade Howell's creative juices have dried up along with his personal life. He has one chance left to save his career. He pushed deadlines too far and spent his advance for a book that's never materialized. He's agreed to ghostwrite blues legend Marvelle Lubelle's life story. The only problem is that she's recording an album with a woman who keeps blocking all his progress. He's got to win her over to access his subject as she records. And somehow, his almost flawless charm isn't working on a beautiful but unpleasant pixie record producer.
Forced to work together, neither has a choice but to push forward. But when the music stops and the lights are low, a new story unfolds and this one neither of them saw coming.
Sound Off is the second story in the Carriage Chronicles. Randomly released novellas that are swoony, steamy, funny reads for when you don't know what to read next. No cliffhangers, and always a happily ever after.

About the author

214—that’s the number of times Kelly Kay has seen When Harry Met Sally. The other day, someone called her an "Adult Content" Nora Ephron. Who knew #goals could come true?
Kelly is the author of several interconnected romcom series and some standalone romances. They’re witty, urbane, wildly funny, heartbreaking, emotional happily ever afters because nothing’s better than a belly laugh and an ugly cry. And a whole lot of kissing.
Chicago-based writer (Go Cubs!), with her roots in Pennsylvania (Sorry Phillies, I married a Cub-loving man), married to a writer, mother of a creative dynamo of a fourteen-year-old boy, and currently a little sleepy. She’s highly organized and a chaotic mess all at once, and loves lipstick as much as Chuck Taylors. And most likely has either a glass of wine or a cup of coffee in her hand right now.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2023A great read. For Wade & Morgan’s story Ms Kay injects her customary humor and pathos into it from the start with a meet cute that will make you laugh, ending with a scene that is emotional and will bring a tear to your eye. Along the way we get Morgan’s sparkling sarcasm and teasing hatred at Wade's goofy grins and sunshine. When they do get together, these two burn hot and steamy!
I loved that they both find in the other a muse for their respective creative endeavours to the point where Morgan worries that without Wade her genius will never flow. Both are broken people when we meet them, but for Wade, Morgan fills up all the cracks in him making him a better person. Whereas she feels that if they don't last, she'll lose everything and sends him packing. This third act break up is well handled as is the eventual reunion within the author’s narrative, this being a moment of the book I really enjoyed.
A great little story with common elements to the first Carriage House Chronicles book but could totally be read as a standalone.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2024"Sound Off" by Kelly Kay
A compelling workplace romance set in the recording industry, blending the tension of opposites attract and enemies to lovers tropes. Morgan and Wade, both dealing with personal and professional struggles, meet in a coffee house, sparking a fiery yet reluctant connection. As they work on their respective musical projects, their defenses gradually crumble, allowing them to rediscover their passions and find solace in each other. The story beautifully explores themes of overcoming the past and daring to believe in a hopeful future. A satisfying read with depth and emotion.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2024Sound Off is the second story in the Carriage Chronicles. Kelly Kay's writing style is distinctive; it's witty and smart with well-chosen words and unique expressions. The way she writes Morgan and Wade's story is absolutely enjoyable. Although Morgan and Wade seem like polar opposites, they have much more in common than they realize. Life has a few surprises as they fall for each other. They couldn't be more different, yet they are perfect for each other. This short novella has a lot of fun and humor but also spice and emotion.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2023Whether a story is 400 pages or just 138 a good story is just that a good story. And that is what Sound Off by Kelly Kay is. As part of her Carriage House Chronicles, Sound Off is a story that deals with big subjects in a real way, and still has a way to make you smile. And that’s because whatever Kelly writes comes from her heart, she feels what she writes and that comes through on the page. That being said this is a Kelly Kay novella, so know along with the big subjects there will be light hearted moments to make you laugh as well.
I am a Kelly Kay fan no matter how long the story is I’m going to read it, and know that I’m going to get a smart, emotionally funny story with the perfect amount of heat just to keep it interesting. Don’t miss out on this series, they are all short and not always sweet, but for sure always spicy!

Morgan, the fiery “pixie” music producer, works closely with former rock star Jake in their Chicago studio. Jake’s wife Meg has her friend Wade staying in their carriage house and he’s now writing about the Motown star whose music Morgan and Jake are working on. He’s strait laced and charming, she gives off all the “don’t touch me” vibes, but is there more to this situation?

I am thrilled that Kelly Kay is once again letting us into her Sonoma/ Chicago world of musicians that started in the Shock Mount and Crossfade stories. We met Wade as one of Meg’s close friends before and get the chance to see inside his kind, caring and wise thoughts here. Morgan was there in previous stories too, but here she has a chance to shine, and be her scared, anxious and brilliant self. It’s hard accepting the love that is being offered, especially when you have been so hurt before. You can easily read this as a standalone but it’s so awesome if you immerse yourself in the backlist 😉❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2023'Sound Off' was entertaining. The hilarious plot focused on two lost souls who met accidentally and changed each other's future endeavors after unloading their baggage. Wade and Morgan, the protagonists, were made for each other and oozed chemistry. Also, I liked the word choices the author used, including figurative language, humor, and vivid descriptions such as, "Assorted teens mill around, ordering cold drinks piled high with cookie crumbs and hormones," or this gem: "I bite my cheek and let my brain buzz take over like static on a TV." Overall, I liked the levity-filled narrative.
I received a copy for free and am voluntarily giving my honest review.
