Stepbrother's Secret: An MPREG romance (A Men of Meadowfall Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 329 ratings

What's worse than losing the love of your life? Answer: Finding out that he's now (1) a single dad and a widower, (2) your business rival, and (3) still very much your stepbrother.

Lonely and estranged from his family, Olivier wishes for love. His music shop is sinking—no thanks to Total Sounds, the new music chain in town. But that's not all: The alpha stepbrother he'd grown up loving? Eric's moving back to Meadowfall with his baby girl, and Ollie's life is officially a mess.

Eric has two goals: One, to raise his late wife's daughter. Two, to ensure that Total Sounds beats out all its competition, especially that one shop, Olivier's Strings. Except the owner of Olivier's Strings is an omega from his past—someone Eric had been truly, madly, deeply in love with. The very omega who had broken Eric's heart right outside their family home, and, unbeknownst to Eric, is still in love with him.

To escape the grief of his wife's passing, Eric confronts Olivier about their past... except Ollie's in heat.

One simmering encounter turns into another, and that new honey scent of Ollie's... It means Olivier is pregnant. Eric has his suspicions. Ollie insists that the baby isn't Eric's. Could it be...?

Stepbrother's Secret is a 99,000-word standalone non-shifter MPreg romance, with second-chance and hurt/comfort themes, an adorable 9-month-old, and an alpha who falls madly in love with his omega again.

Hello! Thank you for wondering about me; I'm a funny, sausage-loving goofball with a surprisingly tolerant husband (his ghost, now!) When I'm not busy writing (which is very rare), I haunt grocery stores and stuff my freezer with my favorite food.

I've been scribbling since I was fourteen, and I believe that everyone needs a safe place. My dorky guys fall in deep, devoted love, the way Huz showed me a person can be loved, and every book is guaranteed to end in a HEA.

Olivier and Eric had loved each other as more than stepbrothers for as long as either one could remember. The only problem is Ollie lied to Eric and told him he never loved him, and pushed him away for what he thought was Eric's own good. Years later Eric returned to town and sparks truly flew this time between him and Ollie despite a lot of emotions on both sides. Poor Ollie used lying as a defense mechanism to protect himself from so much growing up that he didn't know how to stop and always unleashed it on Eric "for his own good". It was sad how oblivious Eric, Cole and Aaron were to how their mother treated Olivier for his entire life, but sweet how Eric stood up for Ollie once he actually knew about the abuse. Jenn was a little ball of happiness both Eric and Ollie needed in their lives and was too cute.

Although I see the need for some social conventions, I am saddened by the ones that keep people apart and get in the way of them finding happiness. Olivier and Eric loved one another and Olivier lied to Eric and said he didn't love him to keep him away for his own good. Or so he thought. And he continued to not be truthful to keep Eric at arms length even when he returned to town and they still desired one another. Kudos to Eric for hanging in there and helping Olivier when he realized that Olivier did not even realize the extend his mother's abuse affected him. It was so cool that they got their HEA and two beautiful kids after their long struggle against circumstances to one another. This is such a good series overall and this story was another very good installment of that series.

I received a ARC and voluntarily reviewed this book.

OK, so I love Anna Wineheart and I love this series. She usually writes some great emotionally-driven angst, there's a short-term breakup oftentimes somewhere in the story, and then things end with a HEA. But through that journey, I love the characters and their chemistry together, and their story, so I'm OK with the angst and a breakup.

In this story, I never connected to Ollie or Eric. Olivier especially, I hated the things he'd tell Eric, the lies (especially the lies in regards to Zan), and the wishy-washy back and forth he had through the whole story. Eric was only slightly better, but he'd waver back and forth between things like "I maybe kinda like you," and calling Ollie his step-brother and brother - big difference between those two words for these two. Miscommunication is my biggest pet peeve, because all of the confusion, heartache, and drama could be resolved with one fifteen minute honest conversation, and these two went through the whole book needing that type of conversation.

Add in family drama (I mean...they're NOT related, guys!), what Ollie said about Eric's late wife and their kid, more lies and avoidance, this story just didn't work for me. I felt like Eric and Ollie were both too emotionally immature to deal with having a kid, let alone raising two.

Levi, however, definitely interested me and I hope he will get a story! And I still would recommend this series - not every story can work for you every time, so I'm still really looking forward to more from Meadowfall!

I received a pre-release copy of this book in return for a review. All opinions are my own.

This is the third or fourth Wineheart book I've reviewed. If you've read her Meadowfall series, you know what you're getting. If you haven't read her, Wineheart is a competent storyteller, with a good feel for handling characters and story. (You don't need to read the other Meadowfall novels to enjoy this one. This is a standalone story.)

This novel is not plot-driven; she has covered the same general plot arc before. The storyline here is emotion-driven, and the novel divides into two halves--the first half of the book focusing on the characters' (mostly Olivier the omega's) struggle to accept their attraction and growing relationship, and the second half focusing on the larger society around them. Wineheart creates her world with quick strokes, because she is more interested in character-building than world-building. For readers of alpha/omega relationships and the MPREG genre, this means readers can expect a novel that focuses on the characters' emotions and internal struggles.

We readers are told repeatedly, especially in the first half, that our heroes are stepbrothers, not "real" brothers. Yeah, we got it--could maybe have done reducing the frequency of the "but we're stepbrothers!" refrain, and Olivier is a bit of a doormat at the beginning, but that does work to keep driving the characters' emotional struggle forward through both halves of the novel. Wineheart's focus on internal acceptance (of their attraction/relationship) and external acceptance (of the introduction of their relationship to their family and friends), she has two villains in her story: Zan, Olivier's abusive ex-alpha who plays into Olivier's self-doubt and sense of himself as a failure; and Wendy, the stepbrothers' disapproving mother, the novel's voice of social condemnation, and an all-around bitch. The villains both exit the story through quick, violent ends, as often seems to happen in Wineheart's books, though the mother continues to cast a shadow over the rest of the novel. Wineheart uses villains' speedy exits to move her story onward, since her focus is on the heroes' emotional journey through self-acceptance, to social acceptance, to the happy ending readers expect in the genre. Love conquers all, and happiness comes to nearly everyone at the end. (Well, mother Wendy remains a bitch, but I guess you can't have everything, and she is "off-screen" by that point.)

This novel hits the major marks in the alpha/omega and MPREG genres. The heroes decide they belong together?--Yep, though their journey encounters a few bumps along the way, as a good read usually does. Somebody ends up pregnant after the first time they have sex together in non-explicit erotic scene?--Yep, and that "but I can't be pregnant" struggle drives a lot of the emotional action here. Wineheart sets out to entertain and doesn't try to challenge the reader that much. Since she works within the blueprints of her genres and doesn't try to challenge the rules that much, she can focus on the emotional drama her characters work through over the course of the novel. Wineheart is a competent writer, with a good command of character and emotional development. That means her novel moves along at a pace that's both brisk and readable.

The novel is a little long in spots, working over some of the same "but we're stepbrothers" territory a few more times than is absolutely necessary, but generally the events move along quickly. Her novel delivers exactly what she sets out to give us: the story of the developing relationship between the main characters who are destined for each other, if they'll just get out of their own way.

In the final assessment, this is a well-told story of the heroes' emotional journey toward a happy ending. For fans of the alpha/omega and MPREG genres, this is a good choice.

I loved this book. It's hot and steamy, but it's also written so that you can feel every emotion. I laughed and cried and loved every word of this amazing taboo story!

Back in Meadowfalls and it's a great book.
This time we meet Omega Olivier, Ollie, from Olivier's Strings, and his stepbrother, Alpha Eric.
    .
The story is marked by the violence that Ollie is exposed to. Through his stepmother and his ex boyfriend. He is completely confused and needs a lot of time to realize that Eric is his "fated mate". Eric, on the other hand, learns how much his mother has infuriated Olivier, how much she despised and shoved him off. He also fights the feelings of guilt left by the death of his wife.
    .
It's a very emotionally charged story, no light fare, Anna Wineheart is very straightforward in describing the violence. This is absolutely important for the story because it shows why it is so hard for Olivier and Eric..
    .
The story is very emotional, heartwarming, the kink is absolutely cute. Eric's daughter Jenn is an absolute highlight, like all the children in the Meadowfalls books.

We meet old friends again, which I personally like very much. I can recommend the Meadowfalls series and this book to anyone who loves stories that have depth, are not light fare, but still absolutely rousing. One of my absolute favorite series.

I had to push just to finish, the omega was hard to like. But I think what annoyed me the most was constant denial, I don't like you.. I don't want you, I'm not good enough. It didn't come across like low self esteem.. it made me skip many pages. And I generally love high angst books.
