The Summer of 71: A Crooke and Loch Story Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 56 ratings

An attack, a shouted warning and a race to safety!

I whirled round putting an arm up defensively, as I did my crash helmet struck an arm and a cosh dropped to the floor with a thud. A curse and heavy boot lash towards me, I put a foot out to block the kick. The reinforced sole of my biking boot crunches against the shin of my assailant. The perfect over the ball tackle. My attacker falls and hits his head on the wall.
“Get out of here!” It is a skinhead girl, she is pointing up the road to where a gang of, maybe, twenty people are heading my way, fast.

A well-crafted plot and snappy dialogue. says author of The Girl in the Baker's Van Richard Savin.

Mick Crooke is a mild-mannered student of Computer Science ... The owner of a Triumph Trident, yes, he is a biker.
On a hot summer night, back in June 1971, Mick meets Samantha Loch under unusual circumstances.

A meeting between a young man and a young woman.
Set against the undercurrent of the all-pervasive violence of Britain the early 1970s. The aggressive youth culture of the Skinheads and post-Kray Twins criminal underworld.

I was born in London, lived most of my life in the south of England. I only say that to excuse writing with a Sarff Lundin accint.

After a lifetime of not knowing what to do, RAF Officer, TV delivery driver, medical rep, trainer, computer guy … I'd even spent three summers running a naturist resort in Portugal. I decided to try something new and retired.

Lying by the pool in the South of France, a story started to take shape in my mind. Then the days got shorter, and the evenings longer, and I started to type. The string of random words turned into “The Uncovered Policeman.” Writing this story, I met the central characters, Bea being the most important. She nagged me into telling what turned into a series of 12 light, cosy romances with a cast of pleasant happy people, with quirky characters.

The New House trilogy, about a couple's first year of retirement in France, followed. “Almost a Year in Occitanie” - No, it is not autobiographical. OK, not very autobiographical.

More recently, Crooke and Loch launch their careers, solving mysteries and crimes in “The Summer of '71” and in a series of follow-up stories spanning the 1970s.

2020 marked the debut of another character … Melody. A lady of a certain age, a generous size and blinding intelligence, who first appears in "Problems and Passions."

The darkness of the great lockdown inspired some darker tales, for example "After The Event." As well as a few more escapist ones, such as "When The Music Stops" featuring the delightful Juliet Evans the singing solicitor

This book may well be author Ted Bun's masterpiece. I haven't read all of his books... yet. But this one is a very well-written story, a combination of romance, police procedural, adventure, and an interesting introduction to the world of naturism in the South of France. The characters of Mick Crooke and Samantha (Sam) Loch are very well-defined and endearingly real. The plot features thugs, skinheads, villains with guns, and members of organized crime dealing drugs. And the setting is very real and brought to full-color life both in the Kentish region of England and in the beaches of Southern France. I definitely recommend this one as a first-class read, and I will definitely be reading more from this gifted author.

A young man, Mick, saves a young lady, Sam, from certain harm. She needs a place to stay for a few days. They become fond of each other and fall in love quickly. Mick is a university student just ending his term for the summer, Sam gets a surprise 2 week vacation, so the go off to France. While there, they discover a connection between her trouble in England. Mr Bun once again weaves love, mystery and a realistic naturism in an engaging story that features characters you will love. If you fell in love with Bea & Rags, you will fall for Sam & Mick.

I read a later installment and came back to number 1. A delightful beginning. Bun tells a good story with just enough detail to flesh out the characters and keeps a good pace.

A story set in the early 1970s.A fortunate meeting between the two main characters starts a story full of surprises. The details give great insights to the times and give the reader a vivid picture of the areas where the story takes place. As far as the adventures, you will have to read to find out.One hint, there is one element present that Ted is well known for. This is an enjoyable story perfectly set up for a sequel or possibly a series.Well done,Ted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crooke and Loch a new couple to love

Ted Bun has done it again with a new book that introduces us to a new uncovered policeman or to be accurate, policewoman.
This book is well written with a believable story line that introduces us to a new couple of heroes. This time though the police element is a woman a WPC no less. It is well written and holds one’s attention from start to finish. The background once again is centred on the nudist lifestyle of the principle characters but doesn’t descend into soft pornography. It shows that nudism or naturism is a healthy approach to life and is not just a front to a world of sex and debauchery. It fits naturally into the storyline.
I look forward to the second instalment and more.

It continues to amaze me how Ted finds so many little strings of connection with real life whilst writing fiction. Clever and thorough research and an uncanny coincidental connection with my own life and dreams/desires. I shall work my way through all Crooke & Loch stories with relish.

A good story, nicely written in a year I remember well, with very likeable characters. Had to light the fire while reading it though as the thought of being outdoors on a typical British summer's day 'in the buff' caused me to shiver.

At last, finally had the chance to read the rest of the book, that l'd started ages ago, I had to read from the start again, but worth it, a great storyline, getting into naturism, chasing the baddies also.
