The Summer of Going Topless: a heart-warming, feel-good romance Kindle Edition
"The Summer of Going Topless’ reminded me to love myself a little more. Can there be anything better than that?" (Trails of Tails)
Candice Summerville is fast approaching fifty-years-old and wonders if she might be invisible. No one seems to notice her - not really. Heck, she often doesn’t notice herself, except for her monthly scrutiny in the mirror to check on her body’s steady slide towards middle age.
But when her ancient, practical estate car is consigned to the scrap heap, Candice falls in love with a cute, purple convertible, and from that moment on her life begins to take on a whole new meaning. Strangers wave at her and people stop to talk, and suddenly she isn’t invisible any longer.
Life seems to be looking up, especially when she meets silver fox and handy-man, Paul. There’s just one fly in the ointment, one thing that has her second-guessing herself.
Is it the car that Paul sees - or is it her?

About the author

Liz Davies writes feel-good, light-hearted stories with a hefty dose of romance, a smattering of humour, and a great deal of love.
She lives on a Welsh mountain with her very patient husband and incredibly sweet dog, where she grows veggies (if the slugs don't get them), bakes (badly) and loves making things out of glitter and glue (a mess, usually). She's been an avid reader ever since she got her hands on a copy of Noddy Goes to Toytown when she was five, and she once tried to read everything in her local library starting with A and working her way through the alphabet. She loves long, hot summer days in the garden, and cold winter ones snuggled in front of the fire, but whatever the weather she's usually writing or thinking about writing, with heartwarming romance and happy-ever-after always on her mind.
She also writes romantic fiction as Lilac Mills

- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2019Well, I did know that the hashtag for this summer is #HotGirlSummer, but I didn’t know we were going topless. But after reading Liz Davies’ delightful book, I’m #Solid.
We’re talking about a convertible. But you knew that, right? So, jump in the car with me and I’ll tell you why I enjoyed this light-hearted romance.
Our heroine, Candice Summerville is in the slow lane of life. No one notices her, and she doesn’t really notice much around her, either. She dresses sensibly in dark colors. She is in a foggy routine that takes her from work to home. Her mother recently passed away. Now, she’s almost 50.
“She’d spent most of her adult life taking care of her husband and family and had paid only a token gesture to taking care of herself.” Her young adult children have left the nest and are doing well. She’s been divorced for over ten years; the breakup of her marriage was hard.
What a woebegone life- until she finds Jelly Bean! Sometimes, it takes just one spark to make a difference and for Candice, her life begins to change (or rather SHE begins to change) the day her old car dies. When her mechanic loans her a Mazda convertible sports car, the road opens up for Candice again and she and Jelly Bean (her pet name for her new car friend) begin to thrive. #Bae
Readers, you will be delighted with the opportunities that Candice now sees and the hope she begins to express. From yoga to romance, Candace is ready to embrace it. “She had lost herself in her marriage and she had found herself again now. She had finally become the person she was meant to be.”
Author Davies writes with a light, clear style filled with whimsy and joy. She writes humor with a deft touch and presents us with a variety of loveable and believable characters. I know you will enjoy Candice’s summer of going topless, and you may want to create your own #HotGirlSummer. #5Stars
Thanks to the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for a digital review copy. This is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2019When you get to a certain age or stage in life, you begin to feel "differently." I don't want to say you feel OLD, but you feel less vital, or needed, or, to be honest, less noticed. Candice Summerville has reached that age. Not only are her kids grown and very self sufficient, her husband has traded her in for a newer model, along with a young son by the OTHER woman, now his wife.
At least Candice has her IT job, at which she excels. Her life has become routine, dependable, perhaps boring is more apt. Until one morning when her same old routine is disrupted by her old car giving up.
That is when she meets Jelly Bean. Life begins to change, color is added and Candice decides to figure out what she has been missing. As Candice begins reawakening to the possibilities in life, the reader may also start seeing the world with fresh eyes. What are you settling for, when there are endless possibilities all around you?
This is a fun read and a gentle reminder that we are no older than we make up our minds to be. Life is not over any day we wake up. Does one need a beautiful and fun car to make a fresh start? It may be exciting to try for a while.
The author makes us feel like we are visiting a friend and gives us something to look forward to as Candice figures out her future.
I accepted this book to review (looked forward to it) but the rating and review are my own opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2019This is a contemporary romance that may or may not appeal to you as the heroine is in her mid-late 40s.
I know not everyone likes reading romance novels when the main characters could be your parents age. I mean ew right? No one wants to think of their parents like that!
What I really loved right off the bat was that Candice was real. In every sense of the word. She’s not a perfectly fit size 8 (my American friends that’s like a size 2 for you I believe), she has some grey hairs, her fashion sense is a bit outdated and her body isn’t holding up like it used to. She even went through a messy divorce that left her lonely, especially when her kids grew up and moved out.
Although Candice went through almost a complete make over, none of it was triggered by a desire to be young and pretty or to impress a guy. Her car broke down, so she got a new one. Her normal hairdresser was out, so the step in one did something a bit different. These were catalysts for change that she rolled with and only did what she was comfortable with and I loved it.
I’m all for, if you’re not comfortable with who you are, how you look or how you feel then do something about it. But I’m also massively against changing who you are to fit in or to impress someone else. For example, even though society, my family and my partner all tell me I should dye my hair to hide my greys. I’m adamant that I want to age gracefully. That’s my choice.
Candice’s choice was to take control back of her life and live it to it’s fullest because you only have one. And I love it! This message of body positivity, acceptance and being who you are is so important for people to read. And I love that this is being addressed in an age group that’s probably feeling quite self-conscious about how they look thanks to marketing and social media.
Thank you for bringing us a real book, with a real character!
