4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

When seventeen-year-old Thomas arrives for his freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, he thinks he is ready for anything. Anything arrives quickly in the form of Dondi Whyte. Dondi is handsome, glamorous, and rich—everything Thomas is not. Is Thomas really ready for anything?

Thomas falls helplessly in love with Dondi and the two begin a love affair. When it ends abruptly, Thomas is devastated. To make up for breaking his heart, Dondi invites Thomas to spend the summer at his family’s mansion by the sea. There, Thomas meets Dondi’s brother, Matthew, and discovers it is sometimes in an ending that we find our beginning.

Bronx-born wordsmith, Larry Benjamin considers himself less a writer than an artist whose chosen medium is the written word rather than clay or paint or bronze. He is the author of gay novels "The Sun, The Earth & The Moon" (November 2019), "In His Eyes," and "Unbroken," which was a 2014 Lambda Literary finalist, and a 2014 IPPY (Independent Publishers Book Award) Gold medalist. He is also the author of Damaged Angels, a collection of short stories, and the allegorical novella Vampire Rising.

While in his writing, he sees to be inclusive, his main goal is to give voice to the previously voiceless, the overlooked, those outside the white homonormative narrative. He strives to take readers, from all walks of life, by the hand and say, “Come. Walk with me in my shoes; this is my life; this is what it’s like to be ‘other’.”

He lives in Philadelphia with his husband and their two rescue dogs.

This is an intriguing love story with interesting characters, colorful situations, a good cry and a perfect ending. And the best part of it is that it illustrates some history and really makes you think.
    Another Bravo for Larry Benjamin.

This was my first book from this author, and I will definitely be reading more.

The story begins in 1977, and I'm very impressed with his ability to honor the trauma of this generation without destroying my heart. I wouldn't have thought it possible to pull off that kind of balance without minimizing the amount of pages spent on the rough parts, and he definitely does not (although he keeps it very specific to these characters and only alludes to the fact that they're surrounded by this horror outside their own small family unit). It's enough detail to have impact without lingering on the pain and horror of the situation, which is partly due to the personalities of the characters and partly a storytelling decision, which I appreciated and which also makes perfect sense because of their personalities.

And I loved the characters. Every single one of them. Matthew and Dondi are filthy rich, and it wasn't annoying for even one moment, which is also impressive.

There is both an awesome Romance (with a capital R) and a story that has nothing to do with romance. This is Dondi's story and it feels powerful even though there's no overarching message that's trying to be delivered here. Really, I think that's *why* it feels so powerful to me. But for the majority of the book it was just interesting and entertaining and even beautiful at times, while also feeling very realistic. It completely lived up to my high hopes. Highly recommended.

***Note: I read the original version of this book, titled What Binds Us. The publisher says of this new edition: "The revisions expand and tidy up the original text, but the story remains essentially the same." The official GoodReads page count shows a six-page difference, but I can't imagine they've changed much since there's not a whole lot of room for improvement :)
