Sun Burns: Pillars of the Empire Book 3 (The Winds and Pillars 7) Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

A power out of control. A Pillar in the hands of a Priestess. A deadly desert burning with heat.

Sun Snake’s life is coming to its sacrificial end. His best friend is already gone, and he’s ready to join Moon in death. When his Power goes rogue as the knives come out, Sun literally falls into a new life fraught with danger.

Scared and lonely, Sun struggles to control the fire that bursts from his fingers at the worst moments. He has a single ally, the Priestess who fell with him – if only he could trust her. Desperate to get out of the Holy Empire, Sun allows Laisal to guide him as they sneak across the mountains to the east. Soon they end up being hunted by Houses, driven into a vast desert, towards certain doom.

Can Sun cheat death a second time?

“Sun Burns” explores a part of the continent no other Wind or Pillar has seen yet, in a tale filled with action, magic and desperate acts.

If you like enemies to friends and slow burn, amid the struggle to simply stay alive, set in a magical world with ever greater stakes, the third book of the Pillars of the Empire by Hannah Steenbock will grab your heart.

Hannah Steenbock is a German writer of Speculative Fiction. She uses both her native German and English as languages for her tales, as she loves English and tends to think in that language when plotting Fantasy.

She prefers stories with satisfying endings and generally refrains from slaying her characters. That's why she likes to call her stories “feel-good fantasy”.

After finishing university with a degree in English and Spanish, Hannah lives and works in Kiel, the northernmost state capital of Germany. Her other pastimes include strolling along beaches, talking with trees, and devouring as many stories as time allows.

Her book "Sequoia" won two awards in the Turning the Pages Book of the Year Awards, for Best Short Story Book of the Year 2013 and Best Folklore Book of the Year 2013.

I'm excitedly awaiting Book 8 Moon Rises :)
I've enjoyed ALL the characters' own stories - South Rabbit, West Whale, East Lion, North Deer, Earth Bear, Sky Falcon and Sun Snake: the twists and turns of their adventures have kept me immersed in the entire saga of the Empire for the past month. I'm wondering if Hannah will go off on another tangent/series with the rescue/escape of the captive Stars, and would be fascinated to see what all their powers are. I can't wait to learn if the "missing" Moon (Rises) will be Gennie grown up, and see if all 8 (plus the Keeper?) will be a new "house" together with Saya/Madu (and other shamans?), who take down the Priests and the Empire! Am re-reading the series now waiting for #8 and picking up on details I missed on the first romp thru the 7 books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this series

I usually stay away from series that aren't finished, but I'm making an exemption for this one. Sun Burns is part of the Winds & Pillars series, and each book is a finished story on its own, but they all tie nicely together, and I enjoyed all of them!
Sun Burns is indeed one of my favorites as it gives the whole arc a new spin with Laisal, the priestess. Sun himself is again a very liekable character, his struggles real, his kindness touching. We also get to meet some of the other characters again. On the whole, I throroughly enjoyed reading this book and am keenly waiting for the next.
I recommend starting with South Breaks, the first book, but it is not a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars The seventh book - the great final is looming
Reviewed in Germany on July 18, 2024
We know the drill. OF COURSE this pillar will also escape his gruesome death so, for that part, every new book will be more about HOW it will happen and discovering the new personality and power we are dealing with. But a murder mystery doesn't get boring because someone gets *gasp* murdered, right? Right?
So, we follow Sun Snake in his escape. He has fire power and struggles quite a lot with what that means. He can also never be sure who he can trust, here.
Everything else I can say would be a huge spoiler but let's say perhaps this book ends a tad bit different than expected and there is quite some foreshadowing of what will come.
Seven books down, one pillar left, two books until we will get a great, epic final. I, for one, can't wait!
