"
Gone in an Instant: Losing My Son, Loving His Killer is a memoir of faith. Choices that teenager Luke made were not the best and led to his murder. Yet, Tammy reacted with love for her son's killer. I lost two boys and was angry for many years at God for the horrors my sons at four and five years old endured. I know my boys are in heaven and I wait for the day when I can see them again. I need to practice more of what Tammy has done as she has motivated me to try meditation with God. Thank you."

"
Gone in an Instant is a book any mother can connect with. The author's kind heart is apparent. It was so very touching. We've all been prodigals in our own way, yet God forgives us. Tammy is an example of showing God's grace in one of the hardest situations imaginable."

"Tammy's story is one of heartbreak, forgiveness, and hope from the moment she first heard of the tragic murder of her son.
Gone in an Instant is about a mother's love and more importantly her faith in the Lord that gives her the strength and courage to carry on. I personally witnessed her incredible love, mercy, and grace. The source for these attributes comes from her Heavenly Father. The truth that permeates Tammy's book and life is that with God in your life, you can face anything life throws at you. A must read."

About the Author

Author and speaker Tammy Horvath lives to travel, love God, and love others. She loves spending time with her son's friends, reminiscing about Luke. She knows Luke is happy with his Creator in heaven and that she will join them one day. Tammy loves to share the story of Jesus' death on the cross and his offer of grace so that all can choose him as their Lord and Savior.

Tammy's favorite vacation destination is the beach, and her favorite travel partner is her husband of over 20 years. She also travels with family and friends and loves making new friends wherever she goes.

Her second favorite vacation has been the many times she has seen aurora borealis. The first time she saw the northern lights was in Iceland, only one month after Luke's murder. While there, God blessed her with four nights of the glorious green dancing sky. In 2023, Tammy saw the northern lights again while staying with friends in Canada—that time, purple mixed with green. She was very blessed when she saw the southern lights, also known as aurora australis, in Australia in 2024. Sightings are fleeting and faint, and people rarely see them Down Under, so tears rolled off Tammy's chin when the sky danced light green and then purple before finally turning a vibrant fuchsia. God truly blesses Tammy in all she does; her joy proves it, and seeing the lights makes Tammy feel close to Luke.

Tammy is a perfectionist, and no one is harder on Tammy than she is on herself. She's proud to have written five very candid memoirs in the Journeys Through Life series, where she doesn't leave anything to the imagination. Her books share travel adventures, losing her son, and forgiving and building a relationship with his killer. Book 5, One Text Away, was the hardest to write because it shows Tammy is human when a doctor propositions her, and Tammy longs to feel his love.

Tammy shares her love with everyone she meets and hopes they will learn that God loves them.

For those who, like me, are puzzled by life, this book provides material for thought.
Tammy Horvath’s heartfelt “Gone in an Instant” will be read by different readers in different ways. There will be those who sympathize, those who condemn, those who lament, and those who are puzzled. I admit to reacting in all these ways though my dominant reaction is puzzlement. “Why?” I ask, “Why when our modern world offers so much that is good and wholesome, do so many choose the repugnant and the deranged? Wouldn’t it be simpler and wiser to choose the former?” The stories that Tammy Horvath tells – for there are more than one – constantly asks that question implicitly. Alas, there appears to be no easy answer to it. “Gone in an Instant” is first about the author’s childhood and adolescence and then about the birth and growth to late adolescence of her son Luke. The author offers a series of incidents that are as much unfathomable as they are unhappy. An abusive, often absent father who is alcoholic and thereby sabotages what might be a happy family. Children who are provided with leisure, have money to spend on themselves thereby glamourizing adolescence and turning it from a right of passage into a permanent state eschewing adulthood and its accompanying responsibilities. From this social disorder, Tammy Horvath successfully embraces the tenets of Christ’s teaching, not so much to make sense of this world as to make the world a place in which life can continue. For those who, like me, are puzzled by life, this book provides material for thought.

    “Gone in an Instant”:
This life is only a vapor. We never know how long or short life may truly be. Our five-year-old son, Austin, unexpectedly passed due to the negligent decision of three police officers. My heart hurts for Tammy Horvath since she also lost her young son, Luke. He was only nineteen when he was murdered. Tammy’s book reflects honest feelings that come after the death of a child. There is a choice to make—hold onto hatred for the murderer OR be directed by God’s plan to forgive. She chose forgiveness. How did she forgive? You will need to read this book to find out. It is a must-read! It’s a 160-page story that will captivate your emotions and thoughts about life’s journey.

Tammy, we have never met, but we shared similarities between our sons’ stories. May God continue to direct your path and shine light in the darkness. Your book is wonderfully written.

Confronting pain, finding forgiveness, and going through the healing process are all important ingredients for surviving any trauma. And as many of us know, it's not as easy as it sounds. I believe that forgiveness is the hardest part, but the author demonstrates how that is also perhaps the most important part of opening your heart and finding peace again.

"Gone in an Instant" will rip you to shreds and then force you take a deep examination about the way you live your life.

I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child in any way, but to forgive his killer is something I can't imagine even considering. Tammy teaches us that forgiveness is not so much for the person you forgive - rather, forgiveness makes our own hearts whole again. Her tremendous strength, fueled by her tender and genuine faith, are truly an inspiration.

Anyone who has suffered severe trauma may find parts of the book triggering. But if you push through to the end, you will find comfort, strength, and healing in Tammy's unbelievably powerful story.

Gone in an Instant is not in the genre I would normally read, but I bought the book because I was curious to know how anyone could forgive their child's killer. The scenario is one every parent dreads – I know I do – someone deliberately, or accidentally, takes the life of your beloved son or daughter. Having lived in a dangerous city where my own daughter was held up at knifepoint, I've lived through all the 'what if' possibilities. So I wanted to know how Tammy Horvath came to terms with her son's death.

This memoir is a rollercoaster that had me glued to my Kindle, and through its pages and the story of her life, I came to understand how the situation arose that ended in such tragedy. Tammy's faith has been her salvation in many ways, but the act of forgiveness is something she chose to complete by freeing herself from her own destructive anger against her son's murderer. She has my utmost admiration and I have learned much about how to release the love that can open the door for forgiveness to enter. This was an extremely powerful and emotional memoir. I can recommend it to anyone needing to be free of bitterness and resentment.

This was one of the hardest books I've ever read. Tammy reveals her early life unflinchingly; the choices she made, heartaches she caused herself and her family. It was heartbreaking to read about the years she struggled with her own and later her son's misguided choices and his fight against inner demons of drug and alcohol addictions. Then, after all she'd been through, to read of his murder...was absolutely devastating, to her as his mother, to me as someone who had bonded with her through reading her story. But through it all, and in the end...Jesus! He carried her, lifted her up, brought her not only a new, loving, Godly husband, but the strength and inner peace to be able to forgive her son's killer. What an incredible inspiration her story is. I pray someday to hear that the young man who brought such pain, would, through her love and forgiveness find his own way to Christ.

What a turbulent and difficult life Tammy Horvath has had as a young woman and young mother. In this raw and honest memoir she descibes the bewildering choices she made in her youth, actions which only brought her despair and mental turmoil. She tells of her loving yet volatile relationship with her son Luke and of the events leading up to his tragic murder.
Distraught and bereft she turns again to God for answers and somehow finds he is always there for her in her hours of need. Incredibly, she finds it within herself to forgive her son's murderer and remarkably learns to forgive herself for her perceived transgressions and accept God's love and mercy in her life.
It doesn't take away grief, nothing can, but it gives her acceptance and the knowledge that she has a life to live and to enjoy. Her faith gives her the strength to face the future. It's a compelling and emotional read and I admire her sincerity.
