To Bleed a Crystal Bloom Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 6,846 ratings

"What a pretty flower to keep locked in a big, rocky tower."

Nineteen years ago, I was plucked from the heart of a bloody massacre that spared nobody else.

Small. Fragile.
An
enigma.

Now ward to a powerful High Master who knows too much and says too little, I lead a simple life, never straying from the confines of an imaginary line I've drawn around the castle grounds.
Stay within. Never leave.
Out there, the monsters lurk. Inside, I'm
safe ... though at a cost far greater than the blood I drip into a goblet daily.
Toxic, unreciprocated love for a man who's utterly unavailable.

My savior. My protector.
My almost executioner.

I can't help but be enamored with the arcane man who holds the power to pull my roots from the ground.

When voracious beasts spill across the land and threaten to fray the fabric of my tailored existence, the petals of reality will peel back to reveal an ugly truth. But in a castle puddled with secrets, none are greater than the one I've kept from myself.

No tower is tall enough to protect me from the horror that tore my life to shreds.

To Bleed a Crystal Bloom is a dark Rapunzel reimagining full of immersive imagery and breathtaking angst. A unique new fantasy series perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer L. Armentrout, guaranteed to grip you from the very first page.

Wow!
When it comes to a completely captivating writing style, Sarah A. Parker’s is top tier. As soon as I finished the prologue, I knew this book was going to have me in a chokehold. This is a Rapunzel-ish retelling, but with so much depth, darkness, & tension. Although there’s not a lot of spice in this first book, the romance aspect is definitely dark. Our MMC is every bit morally gray (don’t go into this expecting Prince Charming), and the relationship between him & Orlaith is SO toxic, but I honestly couldn’t get enough. I really loved her friendships with the other characters as well. Even though a LOT of secrets were revealed through the latter portion of this book, I still have soooo many questions! So glad I finally stopped sleeping on this series because I am LOVING it so far.

Maybe that sounds like a dramatic statement especially to someone who hasn’t read it yet but it’s true. I’ll think about this book every damn day. I need the sequel immediately.

This is a dark fantasy Rapunzel retelling with a bit of romance. I’ll be honest I’m not fond of Rhordyn at all. I typically love a toxic man but he didn’t do it for me. It was too hard for me personally to tell how he really felt and was so up and down even with the few chapters we get in his point of view. Either he’s redeemed in the next book or the love interests shifts to someone else and I’m really excited to see how that plays out.

It had also been a long time since I’ve read a book with such in depth world building. There’s so many questions I thought I’d have answers to by the end of the book but I was wrong and apparently won’t get those answers until the next book. Hopefully.

With that said though, the world was magical and beautiful and the different creatures were fascinating. I greatly appreciated the glossary at the beginning of the book.

I loved Kai’s character and need more of him in the next book he’s too good and sweet. And honestly? I was really drawn to Cain as well and I’m hopeful that he ends up being a good thing to happen to Orlaith in the next book.

As for Orlaith, the main female lead, I loved her character development and the way she came into her own at the very end there and I can’t wait to see that continued growth and hopefully healing from her tragic past and sheltered upbringing.

CW: death, violence, some blood and gore, some ptsd/trauma responses

When I was told this was a Rapunzel retelling I wasn’t sure what to expect. I figured, girl trapped in a tower waiting for prince charming to come save her *eye roll*.

Luckily, this was so much more.. although I’ve read through all of the pages there are still so many dots to connect and questions to be answered which is leaving me reeling for Silver Stem!!

Going along on Orlaiths journey, I was originally hoping for that whirlwind romance. I’ll admit, I was a bit weirded out at first with the perceived age gap between Rhordan and her, seeing as he rescued her when she was just a girl..

It was hard to watch her struggle through the pangs of rejection, denial, emotional unavailability and unrequited love to the point where it was almost disturbing at times. Yet, I couldn’t look away. I was always hanging on hoping the next chapter would be the one (call me a hopeless romantic I guess)

The magic and the beauty of this story for me was the ability to feel her deep pain, anxiety and lack of self-identity. Although this one was a lot to stomach, I think it sets the stage nicely for whatever is to come next. I think there were a lot of lessons she had to learn and if anything this was such a beautiful depiction of naivety and young love and reliving the traumas of heartbreak and pain.

I am so torn with how this book ended - part of me is ecstatic for this poor, anxious, emotionally abandoned girl to get a fresh start in a new place but another part of me need has so many loose ends that need to be tied with Rhordan. I must read on and find out how this journey continues on! <3

"He pillaged my weakness. Offered me a drink from his well and I gulped with greedy draws until I was intoxicated and mindless. Then, he tossed me down the hole and left me there with no way out. Now all I can do is drown."

This book had me in a chokehold; I was hooked from the very beginning and could not stop! Sarah Parker is a literary genius! The writing style portrays vivid imagery that had me fully immersed in the story of Orlaith. My heart was torn out over and over again (in the best ways) in the psychological battle that Orlaith experiences in this first installment.

The story begins with Rhordyn saving Orlaith as a small child from a bloody massacre. Orlaith now lives in his castle tower where she never crosses her imaginary line (aka Rapunzel but she is the one keeping herself inside). She finds her safety in Rhordyn and his castle and because of it she is fixated on him. We uncover secrets along the way through the main characters and the two main side characters that Orlaith lets into her “bubble”, Baze and Kai. All of these men in Orlaith’s life have my whole heart. This first book focuses mostly on Orlaith’s origin and seeds are planted for what is to come. We are left on what I would call a mini-cliffhanger heading into book 2.

The plot development, character development, and depth to which we feel these characters is on a whole other level. This is a book I will never stop recommending and will be thinking about over and over again!

5.0 out of 5 stars sooooo goooood!

Absolutely stunning book. Loved every second. All the characters are great. Omg Rhordyn!!
So much detail and intensity on every page. Love the way she writes. It’s lush with brilliant words. Orlaith is a fabulous heroine. She’s strong yet so fragile. She’s full of trauma but quick witted and big hearted and I just love her and how she handles herself and stands up to the overbearing men in her life. Really impressed with how vivid the scene is set throughout and I can really picture the castle and surrounding grounds. Kai is fantastic too! Let’s not forget about Kai!
Can’t wait for more. I hope this is a looooong series! Yes please! Xxxxx

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written, rapunzel inspired tale that will lure you into its depths.

“𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚊 𝚙𝚛𝚎𝚝𝚝𝚢 𝚏𝚕𝚘𝚠𝚎𝚛 𝚝𝚘 𝚔𝚎𝚎𝚙 𝚕𝚘𝚌𝚔𝚎𝚍 𝚒𝚗 𝚊 𝚋𝚒𝚐, 𝚛𝚘𝚌𝚔𝚢 𝚝𝚘𝚠𝚎𝚛.”

    𝒜𝓃 𝒽𝑜𝓃𝑒𝓈𝓉 𝓇𝑒𝓋𝒾𝑒𝓌:

Initially, I found it difficult to immerse myself in this book. The writing was beautiful, but complex and I struggled to wrap my head around it all. HOWEVER. By 40% everything changed and I was whisked away, unable to stop until I had finished the entire book.

The world: beautifully descriptive with in depth characteristics. A range of intriguing creatures and an interesting magical system which has left me with so many questions.

The plot: follows the story of Orlaith (FMC). I feel like a large part of this book is setting up for the whole series, it plays an important part in understanding the characters and their motivations. The plot begins to pick up in the second half of the book and sets up beautifully to go into Snap a Silver Stem.

The characters: it took me a while to fall for these characters, but once I did, I was there and unable to leave. I was intrigued by the complex mental health aspect of Orlaith, her trauma and coping mechanisms were very real and I enjoyed following on her journey. I felt there was a lot of mystery surrounding the other characters, and whilst I adored them, I had so many more questions than answers. I was unable to stop reading- desperate to find out more and see what (if any) secrets are revealed along the way.

Now? I have a new obsession unlocked and am completely and utterly immersed within this world. I have gone straight into Snap a Silver Stem and am already half way through.

I can’t believe it took me so long to read this and highly recommend reading it for anyone wanting to become wrapped up in a beautifully written romantasy tale.
