Editorial Reviews

Review

"I enjoyed this. A touch of Highsmith." - Ian Rankin, multi-million bestselling author of the Inspector Rebus series

"A fabulous book; so chilling." -
Shari Lapena, multi-million bestselling psychological thriller writer

"Don't let the title fool you. Not for a moment does The Beaten Track tread familiar ground. This inventive, relentlessly slippery thriller, taut as a piano wire, traps its sympathetic heroine in a nightmare that's both it-could-happen-to-you and made-for-the-movies. If you loved Before I Go to Sleep, if you enjoy contemporary paranoia classics like Sleeping with the Enemy or Run, then get on track." -
AJ Finn, author of The Woman in the Window

"The reader watches, fascinated and repelled, as Sandrine makes her way around the world on a trip of a lifetime. Louise Mangos hooks us, then reels us in expertly towards an ending which we both dread and turn the pages furiously to reach. Great stuff." -
Michael Ridpath, author of The Diplomat's Wife.

"With The Beaten Track, Louise Mangos embarks the reader on a sinister journey around the world with shocks at every stop and twists around every corner. Perfect for fans of Caroline Kepnes's YOU." -
Diane Jeffrey author of The Guilty Mother

"An unputdownable, spine-chilling backpacking voyage through the depths of a dark and dangerous obsession. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein meets Cheryl Strayed's
Wild." - Julia Crouch, domestic noir author

"A chilling tale that held me in its spell from start to finish!" -
Lesley Kara author of the brand new psychological suspense The Other Tenant

"
Dark, just dark. Not pleasant reading at all. I loved it!" - Christoffer Petersen, author of the Missing Persons Greenland series

"A chilling account of mind games, obsession and how far a person would go to protect the ones they love. Highly recommended!" -
Noelle Holten author of the Maggie Jamieson thrillers

Louise Mangos has a flair for describing “place”. In this book we get to travel the world with her. Unfortunately, there’s that creepy stalker, but she deals with him well too.

The Beaten Track was an interesting book. Hiking and camping around the world was a dream I had when I was younger. The plot moved slow for the first half of the book but I enjoyed Sandy's travelling. The second half of the book moved faster for me. The story was told from Sandy's and, at times, Jake's point of view. I could see where it was headed but was still interested in the way things would be revealed.

Excellent book, I've been up far too late at night reading this and missed breakfast this morning to conclude this gripping story. Highly recommended

This was a good suspense. You kind of see here it's going, but it takes a long time to get there. Good characters and some good twists. Author did a good job developing characters even if they weren't around for long.

Almost 5 stars. Imagine having a stalker and not even being aware until it's too late. Imagine being so mentally disturbed you don't even know what's real. This book took me a little mentally to switch back and forth between chapters since it's the povs of 2 characters and it's doesn't say which character is which, you just know from a few paragraphs and then you understand the flow and it just auto switches. Intense and infuriating and such a good read.

Louise Mangos is a new author for me and Wow what an introduction to her writing is this book. The way she describes places and situations makes you feel like you are there with the characters.
With two narrators, both of them main characters, and two points of views, the suspense builds throughout the book and makes you yearn to keep reading.
This for sure won’t be my only book by the author.

This is a tale of obsession with surprising twists and turns. The use of two timelines and alternating viewpoints between the main character, Sandrine, and her stalker, Jake made this story more thrilling and suspenseful with each page read. I will be looking for more books to read by this author. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my new favourite reads!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 26, 2022
This! This is the book I needed to restore my love for reading! I have struggled with my reading lately and began to wonder if it was me or the books I’d been picking.

As my first holiday read, I needed something to really grab me and keep me hooked from start to finish and this book did just that!

It’s the mid 80’s and Sandrine is on an around the world trip visiting many places from cities to beaches to trekking off the beaten track. What she doesn’t realise is that she is not alone. Someone has taken a shine to her, early on in her adventure and like a grubbier, creepier Joe Goldberg from You, he will not give up until Sandrine is his!

After her trip ends in disaster, Sandrine returns home and moves on with her life, leaving her traumatic experience with her stalker behind her. She is soon swept off her feet by handsome Scott who is exactly what she needs. Unfortunately, Sandrine’s new bubble she’s living in is about to burst…!

Where do I start with saying how incredible this book is. Having travelled the world myself at the age of 19, I immediately connected with Sandrine. I saw the world through her eyes and felt like I was with her every step of the way. We even share the same favourite wine – New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Thankfully my travels weren’t ruined by a creepy stalker! Although Jake did remind me of a strange guy I met in Singapore who turned weird and I had to quickly lose 😬

This story is different, original and incredibly well written with Louise’s own experience from travelling shining through. It is full of chilling, spine-tingling suspense that had me on the edge of my seat and reading at all hours, just to find out what happened next.

This book is perfectly paced, with plenty happening to hold your interest throughout. The number of times I wanted to shout to Sandrine through the pages to warn her, I was definitely 100% invested in her story.

I think I could go on raving about this book, but I think all that’s left for me to say is that this is an absolute must-read!

Thank you to the author Louise Mangos for writing such an incredible book, that has restored my love for reading ☺️

The Beaten Track is a book that was recommended to me and it was certainly right up my street. From the very beginning, it is filled with tension and I really wanted to know how the characters reached the situation described in such detail in the prologue.

The tension in the novel is not "in your face" but it gathers pace gradually, making me feel quite uncomfortable until the explosive ending. Jake is an exceptionally creepy character and I liked the way this builds throughout the novel. The chapters are told alternately from the perspectives of Sandrine and Jake, so it was great to see inside his head and see what made him tick.

As Sandrine is travelling the world, Louise Mangos' writing takes us to a number of different locations. Although I had not visited these settings myself, her descriptions took me right there and I was able to picture each situation as it happened.

The Beaten Track is full of twists and turns. Although I was able to predict some of them, the story kept me engaged all the way through and I was desperate to know what happened, particularly towards the end.

Strange book. Seems the writer set out to write a travel book the decided to toss boy stalks girl into the mix. The first 200 pages took us through the delights of Hawaii, trekking in New Zealand, Christmas dinner in Sydney Australia and then on to Thailands beaches and the mountains of Nepal. Learnt a lot about the geography of these places, where to stay and what to eat. all good useful stuff. A few bodies along the way and a some romance for Sandrine ( who is the main star ) Anyway back to Switzerland baby on the way ( reminder of Thailand ) no money , no job, no prospects but then Scott ( jake ) pops up. The rest of the book you can guess all pretty standard straightforward stuff. Shock horror. Sandrine hates Scott/Jake while Scott/Jake loves Sandrine and the baby Kai. So what to do ? Its an easy read, nothing too serious, not too gripping, a sort of a mystery and a geography lesson all in one. Good value for $0.99.
