The Dreaming Land II: The Journey (The Zemnian Series Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Some change the world. Some break it.

If you loved the Kushiel series or The Priory of the Orange Tree, try this sweeping epic starring a bisexual warrior princess with a taste for dominance!

Valya has won permission to hunt down the slave traders defiling her land and stealing its children. Now begins the most difficult part of her mission: she and her companions must find the perpetrators of this crime, and rescue their victims. But as Valya will discover, the roots of the evil go deep.

And saving Zemnian children from death or a life of degrading servitude is not Valya’s only concern. She still must win the heart and hand of the son of her worst enemy, and unite the steppe with the rest of the country at a time when the succession and the very life of the Tsarina hangs in the balance.

And then there is the question of her daughter’s magical gifts—and, it may be, her own. Like her foremothers, Valya is about to discover that gifts of power are as much a curse as a blessing, and can be a danger not just to the wielder, but to everyone around her. Valya wants to save her homeland, but if she’s not careful, she might end up tearing it apart.

With discussion questions at the end.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Although I originally composed The Dreaming Land as one complete, unified work, it rather grew in the telling, as these things do, and by the time I was done, it was much too unwieldy to publish as a single unit. So I ended up splitting it. Part II: The Journey is, obviously, the middle part of the trilogy, and as you might guess from the subtitle, dedicated to the heroine's journey across the vast steppe of her homeland.

Like the rest of the trilogy, and of the entire
Zemnian Series, it is populated with homages and allusions to great works of Russian literature, ranging here from the medieval epic The Tale of Igor's Campaign to Chekhov's short stories. Like the former, it moves across a magical, symbolic landscape, in which the human and natural words merge. Like the latter, it contemplates serious issues of morality. In particular, Valya, my heroine, comes face to face with some of the more brutal aspects of her people's culture, and must fight her own worst instincts--even though they are brought about by a desire for truth and justice.

It is in this middle volume of the trilogy that we meet one of the more surprising characters in the story: Tanya, the woman who rescued Valya from her heartbreak after she was sent packing back to the steppe, a figure of scandal, nine years before the current story begins. I had not originally intended to introduce a bisexual love triangle into the mix, but Tanya appeared to me
most insistently in a dream, so I had no choice but to include her. Between that and all the research I did reading dominatrix manuals for the book, it was much more exciting than I had originally envisioned.

And with that to whet your appetites, I'll wish you happy reading, and leave.
Elena

E.P. Clark starting writing fiction as soon as she deigned to learn to read, which was not particularly early--she spent a good deal of her childhood doing more important things, such as pretending to be a unicorn. Slightly later, she wanted to be a world-class equestrian. But, much to her surprise, the heavy finger of fate pointed her way and she ended up moving to Russia, which led, very circuitously, to her earning graduate degrees in Russian from Columbia University and UNC-Chapel Hill, and her current employment teaching Russian at Wake Forest University, along with some odd travel opportunities. The picture, for example, was taken in Finnish Lapland, shortly before she was almost trampled by stampeding reindeer. She continued writing fiction throughout all this, however, and has published multiple short stories and novels. She loves hearing from her readers and can be found at https://epclarkauthor.net/.

Valya and a select group embark on a mission to stop slavers and rescue children. Along the way, Valya learns more about her talents for healing and other magic. She falls more in love with Ivan when he stops her from doing something she'd regret. She encounters slavers, their victims and helpful magical beings as well as forming truces. Watch Valya grow and more in this book I got this series and quickly fell in love. I look forward to reading more of this series.
