"If you're looking for something great to read while waiting for BEES, try Julia Brannan's excellent "Jacobite Chronicles" series: great research and engaging stories!" - DIANA GABALDON

About the Author

Julia has been a voracious reader since childhood, using books to escape the miseries of a turbulent adolescence. After leaving university with a degree in English Language and Literature, she spent her twenties trying to be a sensible and responsible person, even going so far as to work for the Civil Service for six years. Then she gave up trying to conform, resigned her well-paid but boring job and resolved to spend the rest of her life living as she wanted to, not as others would like her to. She has since had a variety of jobs, including, telesales, Post Office clerk, primary school teacher, and painter and gilder. In her spare time and between jobs, she is still a voracious reader, and enjoys keeping fit, exploring the beautiful Welsh countryside around her home, and travelling the world. Life hasn't always been good, but it has rarely been boring. A few years ago she decided that rather than just escape into other people's books, she would quite like to create some of her own and so combined her passion for history and literature to write the Jacobite Chronicles. People seem to enjoy reading them as much as she enjoys writing them, so now, apart from a tiny amount of transcribing and editing work, she is a full-time writer. She has recently plunged into the contemporary genre too, but her first love will always be historical fiction.

Julia has been a voracious reader since childhood, using books to escape the miseries of a turbulent adolescence. After leaving university with a degree in English Language and Literature, she spent her twenties trying to be a sensible and responsible person, even going so far as to work for the Civil Service. The book escape came in very useful there too.

And then she gave up trying to conform and resolved to spend the rest of her life living as she wanted to, not as others would like her to. She has since had a variety of jobs, including telesales, teaching and gilding. In her spare time she is still a voracious reader, and enjoys keeping fit and travelling the world. Life hasn’t always been good, but it has rarely been boring.

In 2014 she decided that rather than just escape into other people’s books, she would actually like to create some of her own, in the hopes that people would enjoy reading them as much as she does writing them. It seems that they do, and she has now published several historical novels, and has also branched out into contemporary fiction too.

In 2019 she moved to live in rural Scotland with her cat Constantine, and loves living in her favourite country!

Alex and Beth, so much happened in the two years apart, each believing the other dead. Incredible writing, descriptions. The love these two had for each other never falters. I am personally glad I wasn't born in such turbulant times

This book is another winner with lofty highs and bottomless lows for our characters and actions on the part of the Stuart's that rung the death knell for the Jacobite Rebellion. (I don't consider that a spoiler; it's in all the history books.) TIDES OF THE FUTURE is as engrossing and well written as all the books before it. Sadly, it's also the last book in the series. I'd like to be able to look 10 or so years in the future and see all the friends reunited and find out how Anne, Edward and Caroline, and Sarah are doing. But I'm sure that's wishful thinking.

The Jacobite series contains so much information about Charles Stuart, the uprising, people of the time, highlanders, Cumberland, places and background and battles that I had a hard time putting it down. I'm very interested about this time and the people in it that once I find something written about it historically or romantically, of course I must pursue it. And in this case I was totally blown away. If you enjoyed Outlander or British and Scottish history including monarchs, battles, and the beautiful landscape of the 17th cencury, this series will delight. The research completed in producing these books is impressive. The romance woven throughout the series binds the story line. I truly enjoyed each book and think you will, too. Julia Brahman is a very talented author.

Fascinated by all the treachery and intrigue. Kept reading to find out if Alex and Beth would get back in each other's arms since both were presumed dead.

I LOVED this series. The characters were so well presented that you could love the them or hate them depending on their actions. The action felt real. Descriptions were detailed and made it easy to picture. Non-stop intrigue kept me turning the page long after I should have been asleep. I couldn’t wait to get to the end, but I didn’t want it to end. It would make an amazing movie!

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book so well written. Bravo, Julia!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enriching and amusing series

I loved the character Anthony Peters and the way he paid attention to details. The jacobite rising, the life of slaves in colonies was an eye opener. Beth comes out as a righteous character. Couples with author's personal notes segregating the fact and fiction was enlightening. Though the plot is serious enough, the little banterings and humour keep entertaining. I had to hurry through the last 2 part of the series, unable to resist the temptation of sweet reunion of the protagonists. I loved the series. Thanks Julia for such an amazing work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series that I could not put down!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2022
I read all 6 books so fast! A wonderful series with characters you just love and want to cry and laugh with, but also those characters you will deeply dislike. Adventure, humour, history, deep emotion. It has it all. It also has very well developed plots lines that are unrushed and that link cleverly between books - it takes an excellent writer to think ahead and and create those natural 'of course! -NOW that makes sense!' moments. The fact that it is based around a real time in history that is well researched gives it added gravitas. Sometimes I wanted to skip the more historical parts a bit as I was desperate to know what would happen next to the characters, but I think it helped having it anchored in things that really happened. I would highly recommend this series - even though the last book was SUPER frustrating as you longed for a particular occurrence that took some time to happen! However, I do understand the authors desire to delay and just wish we had more time with the characters at the end, hearing their conversations after all they had endured. This is a really wonderful series that I would highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars brutality and reunions

I am glad that I didn’t live in the era depicted in Tides of Fortune.
The story continues in Scotland, France, England, and the West Indies.
Pirates, some nice, and some not so nice but useful (met them in an earlier book).
I was glad that there was a somewhat happy ending for the series, human nature can be harsh, brutal and unfair, but there is always the hope of the softer side in all of us.
Historically, this novel and entire series is well done and written. I loved it and will read it again after I have read the companion character novels related to this.
I won’t miss the characters that I have come to admire, except maybe Beth.
