The Lumberjills Kindle Edition
Danger is never far away, be it an ill-timed axe swing or the occasional activity of the Luftwaffe overhead. Add a psychotic farm cat, a couple of young runaway evacuees, a spate of malicious packages, and the jealousy of the Land Girls next door, and life for Berry and her friends is never boring.
Can the girls find the balance between their vital war work and the natural pull of love?

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2023Format: KindleHaving read and loved M W Arnold's In The Mood (fourth book of the Broken Wings series), I was keen to read the first book in his brand new Lumberjills series and I was not disappointed! First of all, have you ever heard of or knew about the lumberjills? I certainly hadn't! They were the female equivalent of the 'lumberjacks' and they took up axes during the WWII to fell trees as part of the war effort. Strong, resilient and full of optimism, the stars of The Lumberjills are women I would love to be friends with and join them in their adventures.
As Berry, Vicky, Sophie and Marcie (I could be forgetting someone!) settle into their billet on a farm with the wonderful Bob and Sheila, their adventures begin. If you love books that provide a fabulous sense of community, friendship, struggle and romance, I highly recommend THE LUMBERJILLS!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2023Format: KindleI have heard of land girls but never lumberjills. This was a new one to me. I was captivated by what they did. It was extremely dangerous and put them at risk of suffering an injury.
The lumberjills were a group of young women that lucked out when they were assigned to Sheila and Bob's farm. Each girl had a story to tell of how they landed up doing this dangerous job. With time, they became close and shared their emotional journeys.
The characters were great. M W Arnold wrote an amazing story and I enjoyed it a great deal. Its pretty amazing how he wrote female characters so realistically when he is a man.
I am more than ready to read other stories by M W Arnold. He brought history to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb historical fiction
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI must admit that I have been a fan of M. W. Arnold's work for quite a while now. I have read and loved all of his books. When I heard that M. W. Arnold was due to release another book, I knew that I had to grab a copy at the earliest opportunity and squirrel myself away until I had finished the very last word on the very last page. Well ladies and gents the wait is over because M. W. Arnold's new book is called 'The Lumberjills' and it was released on 8th February 2023. It's a cracker of a story, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading but more about that in a bit.
Anybody who knows me well knows that not only am I a book geek but I am also a history nerd, with a particular fondness for historical fiction set during the Second World War. So you can probably imagine why the synopsis of 'The Lumberjills' screamed 'you need to read me' at me. I started reading and found that I just couldn't stop. I had picked the book up only intending to read a chapter or two but I became so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the characters that I was still sat there reading several chapters and an hour or so later. My Kindle wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. All too quickly I reached the end of 'The Lumberjills' and I had to say goodbye to Berry and the rest of the characters. I found 'The Lumberjills' to be a gripping read, which certainly kept me guessing.
'The Lumberjills' is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from M. W. Arnold. He certainly knows how to grab the reader's attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story. M. W. Arnold clearly cares about his characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which he describes them. He makes the characters in his books seem just as real as you and I. M. W. Arnold has clearly done an awful lot of research into 'The Lumberjills' as well as wider research into the time period in which the story takes place and this makes the story seem that bit more authentic. I love the way in which M. W. Arnold makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That's how I felt anyway.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Lumberjills' and I would definitely recommend it to other readers. I hope to read much more of M, W. Arnold's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThere seemed to be a lot of jumping about from one storyline to another & at times I actually felt a bit bored reading it & easily lost concentration. The storylines seemed to be quite interesting but because so many were crammed together i felt none were really given any justice.
As a rule i usually enjoy this author but The Lumberjills was a let down

5.0 out of 5 stars THE LUMBERJILLS.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat I liked about this book is the knowledge you get of the life of these girls, doing a very hard job felling trees as their 'war work' and the camaraderie between them. This book is a really good read, which I would recommend to anyone who likes reading about the period of time around ww2. This book shows you how girls 'done their bit' other than the services and munitions. Hopefully another book will follow.
