To Marry a Prince Paperback – March 1, 2011

4.3 out of 5 stars 930 ratings

Can an ordinary girl survive preparations for her very own Royal Wedding?

Bella Greenwood isn't a fairytale girl. If pushed, she'd probably tell you that her perfect wedding would involve a handful of close friends and family. But as she's never met anyone she'd like to marry, it is a moot point. Until, in a midnight garden, Bella is helped out of an embarrassing situation by a tall, dark, handsome man with laughing eyes. Suddenly her life changes for ever, because the man is the world's most eligible bachelor—Prince Richard, heir to the throne. Richard sweeps her off her feet, and before she knows, it they're engaged—which is when Bella's problems really begin. Suddenly she is public property, and as if it isn't enough to have her every move watched—while also learning to curtsy and negotiating the etiquette of how to address her future mother-in-law—she soon finds herself embroiled in bridesmaid politics, a royal hen night, and a wedding dress controversy that causes a national scandal.

What fun! This story romps from first meeting to final page. I loved every minute of reading this.

Bella Greenwood didn't expect to meet anyone interesting at the party her friend dragged her to, but alone in the garden, the man of her dreams rescues her from the disaster she's created. Amid the fallen planters, and omnivorous ivy, he appears, extracts her from the dirt, calls her "Dream Girl" and disappears with her phone. Days after she retrieves it from him, she discovers that he isn't just another guy. He's the crown prince of England. What could he possibly want with her?

The more time they spend together, the more willing they are to thumb their noses at tradition. He may be meant for a bride with a pedigree, but love doesn't really care. Prince Richard is willing to do almost anything to keep Bella in his life but can he ensure her safety when the royal watchers get rabid?

Loved the romance and the strength of the main characters. There is some steam but most is kept behind closed doors.

Of course you think of Diana and Kate (respectfully plug in titles please). And as an American, we're all a little fascinated by the British Royals -- the process of dating/marrying the Prince of Wales was detailed and riveting. Who knew? The story was good. I wanted more at the end... what about the hateful vamp Chloe? What was really wrong with Nell? Is the King going to die in 2 weeks and cut short the honeymoon? Is she pregnant? Because what was all that about her weight going up and down and her belly at the Viking weekend? Something was up there, right? I LIKED the story a lot. I liked the meet-cute and I liked the prince's character as he struggles with his immense duties and responsibilities -- I REALLY liked the gift he gives himself their wedding day. Go, Prince! I just wanted... more.

I read this book several months ago, and I have not been able to forget it. I haven't felt so happy reading a book in a long while, so I thought I should review it for others who haven't read it. First of all, it's an alternate history book, but it's done in a very believable way--I have a low tolerance for suspension of disbelief, but I had no trouble accepting that there but for a quirk, another family would be living in Buckingham Palace. I lived near London for ten years, and learned a lot of British history while I was there. I often thought that if so-and-so had not died, how different history would be! By choosing a relatively recent historical figure to have lived instead of died, Sophie Page manages to convincingly write this alternate history where Prince Richard is the very attractive Prince of Wales. I also liked the location--having lived in London, I could easily imagine the places the characters went. All in all, this fantasy romance really felt believable to me, more so than more traditional romance. Now I desperately want to read a sequel!

The book itself required a lot of suspension of disbelief, but overall was decent. The characters were well drawn, and mostly interesting, and lots of fun. But the ending seemed sudden and weird. Seriously, while the bride is getting her wedding dress on, the groom is climbing up a rock wall? Too contrived, and left me quite disappointed.

I loved this book. It was a true romance about real life. Its about balancing all its aspects and in To Marry a Prince there's a happily ever after to boot. Heavy on the laughs with a steady romance and some very intriguing characters with bad guys (and ladies). It was an easy-going novel which was well-written and light-hearted, exactly what I was looking for at the time. I will definitely be looking for more from Sophie Page in the future. But be warned, if you want some down and dirty with a prince you won't find it in this book.

I really liked it. The plot was good, not totally realistic-but hey, it's "Cinderella" after all and we have to suspend some disbelief . It kept me turning the pages to see what happened next. I didn't like the language. There was much more swearing than I would have liked, but it wasn't as pervasive as it could have been.

There was a plot-twist at the end that I didn't see coming. She tied up all of the plot strings and ended it just before the wedding, so I felt a bit cheated/deprived by that. I wanted a royal wedding included and leaving it out was like missing out on dessert-a nice helping of English Trifle in this case.

I know the author is English, but the "voice" of the novel felt American in the beginning, although later it did begin to seem English. I'm not sure if it was only that the vernacular used seemed more American to me, but I didn't feel any "Englishness" in the early chapters. Maybe we have changed contemporary British English more than I thought, or she was writing for an international audience. I don't know, but it did want to make me stop reading. I'm glad I continued.

On the whole, I'd recommend this book. Once in a while, that's just what you need: Cinderella with a side of English Trifle.

I saw that this book had only one review, and I thought what I great injustice that was for this book has surprising depth. The story of the characters' romance is kind of whirlwind but also believable in it's on way. You get to know them as individuals (especially Bella) AND how they come to be the couple that they are. I felt like I was with them on their journey. This was an addictive read for me, maybe cause I'm all about fairytales and Prince Charming; but here we see that Prince Charming has some personality flaws just like everybody else and learn along w/Bella that on the road to true love we have to take the flaws and all.

The only bad thing I can say is that I was left w/o an epilogue. But that's just me; I'm always left unsatisfied if I don't have a look into the lives after the happy ending. This in no way takes away from the book just that I wished I had more time w/Bella and Richard. That is just a testament to how much I loved this book. A definite re-read for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Zauberhaftes Cinderella Märchen
Reviewed in Germany on April 29, 2011

I expected there to be lots of books with this theme and was not going to read any of them. But, I'm a romantic and yes, a Royalist, and I'd heard Ms Page could write.
    And she can, beautifully.
I read it, in three sittings, very early in the morning, and each morning laughed so much, not at Bella and her believable predicaments, but with her. Poor girl comes back from a year counting fish , is ignored by the social climbing mother - who turns out not to be so awful, and goes to a party with her friend, Lottie. (We should all have/be a friend like her!) She falls over a plant and is rescued by, yes, you've guessed it. She doesn't recognize him -well she had knocked down all the lights, and it goes from there. Richard and Bella, Bella's Right Royal Republican father, Lady Pansy are beautifully portrayed and are so real. We feel for the young couple with every twist of the plot and are so happy at the lovely ending. It's a very funny book but not over written in the manner adopted by two many writers who throw in pages of one liners. (That's not funny at all.) I won't spoil it by telling you the funny bits but just let's say that Scottish Country Dancing and a wee stroll in St James's Park will never be the same again.

Cute story - I’m always one for a royal romance so was very please to discover this gem. A little short for my taste but very well written and definitely worth a read.
