4.2 out of 5 stars 703 ratings

He's never wanted anyone... until her.

After being condemned to the fighting Pits as a child,
Kace was forced to do horrifying things to survive. Now, as an adult with a curse that intensifies his rage, he keeps himself away from anything that can break his carefully constructed control. So when he meets Eva, the only woman who has ever ignited such raw, violent passion, he has no choice but to stay away.

Eva didn't think much when her vampire ex-boyfriend showed up asking for her back. Except she wasn't interested, and the man she had once loved wasn't taking no for an answer. Defended by a tall, moody and definitely dangerous man her ex left, and she thought that was the end of it…

Until she wakes up dead.

Thrown into an unfamiliar world, Eva only has one hope to free herself from her new master, and it just happens to be the same man she’s been warned to stay away from.

A slow burn but the chemistry between Eva and Kace was unreal. The storyline was very intriguing and had you wanting to know what happens next. The other characters were great compliments to the main characters and they made you want to get to know them as well. There were spelling errors and grammar mistakes throughout the book that was getting pretty annoying but otherwise it was a good read.

I gave myself a week to really think about the good/bad parts of the book instead of making a review fresh from reading. If I had done that, I am pretty sure I would have ripped it a new one. Even now, I am still quite disappointed with many aspects of this book. I will say that it had a lot of potential, but I felt like the author omitted important details and half-assed the remainder of them, which is a shame because that could have made the book great.

    ***SPOILERS AHEAD - BE WARNED***

The book starts off with the H & h meeting and bickering where she works. You think, hey this is going to be a good enemies-to-lovers book. You are wrong. After their first encounter the H & h do not meet/talk to each other again until 46% into the book. I found myself skimming through the book to finally find when they meet again. When they do, all they do is bicker, have sex, and bicker again. Then at their next encounter, same thing. It was hard to see them form any type of bond/love with one another when all they did was bicker to each other on the rare chances they meet. Even at the end of the book, they are just...together...after only sharing maybe a total of 48 consecutive hours together. I felt they were only together because the book was ending and the author wanted a HEA. By the end, it seemed like the H still couldn't come to terms with his past and was only able to control his beast because he liked the h - not because the h actively helped him work through his issues. Additionally, the author never goes into great detail about how his past messed up his inner beast - just that he had a past and now he is messed up.

*Side note - During the first meeting, the H brings up a sexual interaction that he had with the h, which took place during the timeline of the first book, but wasn't actually in the book. I was extremely confused because I had just read the first book and did not remember the scene. I even double checked to make sure I wasn't losing my mind. Why would the author omit that from the first book then use that timeline in the second when other interactions between them were mentioned?*

Another thing that frustrated me was that even though the h went through an extremely horrendous 3+ month kidnapping/maybe more happened (we weren't told what), she seems relatively OK about it. She gets violently attacked by her boyfriend, turned against her will, held hostage by said boyfriend (having to do who knows what since once again we aren't told) until she is traded to a violent syndicate (who happens to be the same man associated with the H), and then gets repeatedly(!!) abused and threatened with rape. That would mess even the strongest person up - yet she ends the book with "yeah we both have a lot to work on." I would have preferred to see them heal each other and face what happened to them during the book. But it ends so quickly, we don't get that closer.

Finally, the last issue I had with was the villain, and all interactions he had with the h. I stated above that he constantly threatened her with rape. By that I mean, every time the narrative switched to the h it was brought up. Over and over and...you get the idea. It got to the point that it was so overused that I wasn't worried that it was going to happen. The author overplayed the threat to the point where the villain wasn't really a threat; he seemed "all talk, no action." However, at the climax fight between the villain and H, the villain taunts the H by making claims that the h "gives good head." Soo, did something happen and the author failed to tell us? Are we supposed to speculate on that type of thing, because I feel like when it comes to sexual assault of main characters in any book, the audience should be made aware. It all seemed to be a very grey area that the author refused to commit to - was she assaulted (in any form) or not?

Overall, I am quite disappointed with this book because it had so much potential, but the author failed to give her all into it. I immensely enjoyed the first book too, but I am pretty iffy on if I'll read the third one.

I know I’m only on the second book of the series but I’ve been eating through these pages like crazy! The plot moves quickly enough to keep you interested, but not to miss out on important details. I LOVE the dynamic of Eva and Kace. And Lucy’s comedic relief really just rounds out the whole story. Great read!! Looking forward to the rest.

Touch of Blood is the second book in the Curse of the Guardians Series. I enjoyed reading Kace and Eva’s story, especially since I was introduced to them in the first book of the series. I really enjoy the paranormal world Taylor Aston White has created for these stories. Things I loved: world building, interesting characters, spicy scenes, great plot, and action. Things I didn’t love: I didn’t feel the writing or editing was all that polished in this book which can be a little distracting. Though Kace and Eva have some chemistry, it seemed their connection lacked a little something. There were many scenes where they were not together which might be why. I still enjoyed the story enough to give it 4 stars and will continue to read the series.

TW I know this is a dark romance but the suggestion of sexual assault and rape is a lot in this book for me, and if I had known how much I probably would’ve skipped it. While the main character isn’t raped on screen (though she is touched assaultively) the suggestion that she was (repeatedly, horrifically and in a variety of ways) is enough for me to prefer to skip. The main love interests didn’t even really meet until 55% of the book and based on the first book I really thought Eva was gonna be rescued but instead it was three months of trauma. A fine story, not for me due to that.

Kace fascinated me from the beginning of book one. I wanted to know whats up with this hot head whith a soft spot for children from the streets. In this book we dive into the underworld and buisness deals of the fighting pits. If you liked the first book of the guardians you will like this one as well!

4.0 out of 5 stars Kace and Eva
Reviewed in Australia on April 19, 2023
I really like this world in which curse of the guardians is set, I enjoyed this story but I would have liked a bit more of Kace and Eva together if I'm honest, they really only came together at the end of the book and no one even knew Eva was missing or had been changed until nearly halfway through which is pretty sad I really felt for Eva that was heartbreaking 💔 I can't wait to read the other Guardians books 😍

Eva had terrible taste in men if her ex was anything to go by, he couldn't seem to let her go and in the end was the cause of her end. He forced her change and then when his debts caught up to him he was forced to hand her over to a far greater evil. Eva was used and abused as it was discovered she wasn't just any fledgling but her blood a euphoric drug to other vampirs. As Kace's days continued to be numbered with his beast getting closer and closer to taking over completely, whispers began of the pits being reestablished. The pits he spent most of his childhood in fighting for survival until he was somewhat saved, though never the same. When one of the boys he helps keep off the streets goes missing the trail leads to the same place he swore he'd never step foot in again, what he didn't expect was to come face to face with Eva, she had been suspected missing for a couple months but she was very different and clearly had been changed, a few exchanged words and he quickly discovered she was there against her will and under the thumb of the same man he escaped. Now he needed to rescue not one but two from the sands of the pits, especially because his beast wouldn't settle until Eva was safe. Question was would he walk away from the pits a second time with his life or be just another soul lost to the sand.
