The Rest of the Story Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 5,525 ratings

Let me earn it.

I keep things simple. I’m a classic one-night wonder. Relationships? Are you out of your mind? No. No way. Not interested. My heart is vulcanized rubber, puck hard, and that’s the way I like it.

Then I'm traded to the absolute worst team in the NHL, the Rocky Mountain Outlaws, and I’m hit with a one-two punch.

First: I’m asked to step up and lead the team, which is every kind of bad idea you can imagine. I'm a head-down, mind-my-business kind of guy. Mr. Uninvolved, Mr. No, Not Me, Mr. Find Someone Else. But these players have been through a mess of hell, and someone thinks I can help pull them together.

The Outlaws are made up of jaded veterans and wide-eyed rookies, and we have no business whatsoever succeeding. We are scrappy and plucky and built out of spit and duct-tape… and whatever we’re doing, it’s working.

Second: The first day I’m in Boulder, I go over the boards and come face-to-face with a pair of blue eyes and lose my heart. Boy, howdy: meet my new co-captain, Shea Darling.

He’s way, way off-limits. It's a stratospherically terrible idea to want or crave him. This crush, this infatuation, is going nowhere fast.

Yeah, right. I’m
gone for Shea. I’m head over heels, and I’m all tangled up in something I can’t understand or control. This isn’t me. I don’t fall in love. And there’s nothing simple about Shea, or about the Outlaws. This team is finally putting up the wins, and we are making something of ourselves. Falling for my co-captain while we’re on a Cinderella run could jeopardize everything we’re striving for.

But then there’s this one night.
And this one kiss.
And
everything changes.

Eighty-two games in a season.
Twenty men hungry for redemption.
One co-captain who could be my forever.

This is the rest of the story.

*****

All-consuming love and perfect found family
Oh my goodness, this book! How on earth can Tal Bauer create something extraordinarily special every time is beyond me, but I'm here for it! The Rest of the Story tells Morgan's story. It tells a tale about powerful, all-consuming love. And not just the romantic kind but the kind that grows between unlikely friends who've been through some really bad things together. Morgan is traded to the worst team in the NHL. But when he arrives, it turns out there's a reason for them being so low on the leaderboard. That reason is a horrible, horrible situation that Morgan has the chance to save them all from. And from those broken men with good leadership and being there for each other, they forge something powerful. The Outlaws don't just become teammates. They become family. The team doesn't just show up to play. They are there to prove themselves. They don't just try. They shine bright together. The team dynamics, the love between those friends, the protectivness. It's absolutely indescribable! I felt every moment of happiness and every moment of agony with them. It was amazingly written. And the love story? Because this is about romantic love too. It's the sweetest, most powerful lovestory I ever read. Morgan and Shae's journey is slow and full of learning and healing before it becomes anything more than friendship. Especially on Morgan's part. He quickly became one of my favourite main characters of all time! His past and his character and his strength are all there on the open for everyone to see except himself. His self-doubt and self-deprecation are the saddest and most heartwrenching things I've ever seen. He is so precious. Fortunately, there's Shae, the team, Kathy, to show him how much his true worth is. The connection, the chemistry, and the inevitability between Shae and Morgan took my breath away. I could feel every breath, every small touch, every smile, and I fell in love alongside Morgan. I have to say, I'm not much for spicy books, so I enjoyed the slow burn feeling in this book. And when they finally came together, it was one of the best hot scenes I've ever read. It felt right! But of course, while it seemed like the happiness might consume me, there was a gut punch of a final twist. Just to really squeeze out those tears. And o, the tears came. I was utterly heartbroken! And yet, these precious men who already have been through so much came through at the end. I can't even telliff this review makes any sense or not. I just tried to express all these emotions inside me. Tal Bauer can write romance like no one else. Amazing! *I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of the book.*

Disclaimer: I have never read a book where the author has you chuckling one moment and the next holding back tears...only to making you smile through teary eyes to making the tears of sadness, happiness, all wrapped around a cast of characters that will keep you with the story through 370 pages in in a matter of a couple of late nights and sneaking a chapter or two during the day!
I have always enjoyed reading Tal Bauer"s stories. I am not a sports fan by any means and I had eyed this book of Bauer's for a while before getting it on my physical pile of to read. After not being overly enthused with what I was reading I decided to switch gears and picked up Bauer's "the rest of the story." Bauer makes understanding the game of hockey easier even for someone like me who really does hate what sports can do to people who pursue them. Major league sports are for the very few people who can physically excel at whatever sport they enjoy playing. My worry is for all of the thousands of boys and girls...men and women who never make that cut to become one of the few who make the top. High school players in any and all sports who shine in the local spotlight...only to be left without all the adulations and praise, and yes love, from local fans that quickly disappear when these young adults find themselves left out. Yes, most of them ease into a different life, but many also do not.
This is a wonderful story written by a very talented author. Thank you Tal Bauer for taking us on the most incredible roller coast ride of emotions that I have ever experienced from reading a book. You pulled me in and wound me up tight...and kept me that way for the next 328 pages! Sports fans or not, you can read this for all of the words that follow this review...and more! I give this one 7 Stars!!

I’m convinced there is no other story teller quite like Tal Bauer. No other author has had me in tears as many times as Tal has! There is just something about a Tal Bauer book that makes you feel so GOOD, all while leaving you feeling forever connected to the story and characters.

I loved every single direction that Tal took us on throughout this book; it was a story of growth and healing, togetherness and found family! In all honesty I could have never predicted some of the things that happened in this book; I never saw them coming and it made the story all that much better!

Morgan finds himself traded to the worst team in the NHL—he tells himself he will be there for a year and then leave. What he doesn’t realize is WHY he was brought there. When he arrives to the Outlaws facility, he quickly realizes things are NOT good; the current captain is the most awful human being to grace the earth, and Morgan finds out quickly he is going to be the one to put him in his place. One of the rookies, Shea Darling, quickly catches his eye, and they become fast friends. Shea has been the rock for the rookies as they endured the abuse by their previous captain; he’s an anchor, and one of the single most wholesome and steady characters I have ever read.

The relationship building in this book is top tier; they grow as individuals, grow as a couple, and they learn to lean on each other when it’s needed. Shea quickly becomes Morgan’s reason for becoming the man that he grows to be, and Morgan becomes that backbone and support for Shea as he navigated his rookie NHL season.

This book is entirely plot driven; it’s got the right amount of spice for all that happens within the pages, but it is most definitely a slow burn! That being said the “slowness” of the burn didn’t bother me one bit, I was completely invested in not only Morgan and Shea, but the team!! This team becomes a family right before your eyes, and when everything goes down at the end of the book I thought Tal did a phenomenal job showing and recognizing all of their feelings.

This book has easily made its way to my top reads of 2024 list, so obviously I think EVERYONE should read it!!

In general I liked this book a lot. Loved the plot, the romance, the interactions. I even learned a bit about hockey. I like Tal Bauer's writing and use of dialogue. I did like the book a lot. However , , , a couple of things. First of all, it's mostly set in Boulder, CO, which is my home. Clearly the author has never been to Boulder. When the main character is traded to a team there, he makes it sound like he's being sent to some hell hole in the desert. It's a charming town, gorgeous setting, lots of culture, and VERY romantic. None of this was used in the book. Descriptions of trips into the mountains to small towns and cabins is also not quite right. Boulder is a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and the major ski areas.

The other thing that just did not ring true to me was that the hot couple who fall in love somehow spend weeks, months, living and sleeping together but never really have sex. Lots of talk about "making out." In all my years, I don't think I've ever heard any of my gay friends talking about "making out." And with this is the notion of "waiting until they are married." Huh? In the 2020s? Who does that? Who would have that kind of will power.

Having said this, I loved a lot of the small details. The nature of the wedding rings the boys exchange is very touching. The secondary and minor characters are well-drawn and realistic.

Even though I yelled at it a couple of times, I couldn't put this book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I’ve read
Reviewed in Australia on January 9, 2023
I have read over 500+ books over the last couple of years. Some of them are absolutely amazing and have stayed with me forever (most of them are by Tal let’s be honest)

THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ.

I laughed, I swooned, I cried. I cried so much. From about 50% on I was crying. Happy tears, sad tears, heart break tears, hurt tears and joyful tears.

Morgan “Moogs” Elsher is traded to a new team at the end of his current contract. And it’s the worst team. Bottom feeders of the NHL. He’s getting to the age where he’s worried about continuing on. He just needs to get through the 365 days. Unfortunately for him, on his first day- he meets Shea Darling- and his blue eyes.

This story is about a team coming together and creating a family. Finding strength and becoming a leader. About building something out of nothing. Facing your pain. Found family. Deep friendships. True soulmates. A true love story which will stay with me always.

I shouldn’t be surprised Tal still wrecks me. It’s nothing new. But I loved it. I love his writing, his story, the characters. All of them. Even the minor ones. He truely is a gifted writer and had the ability to really move readers with his words.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece
Reviewed in Canada on January 30, 2023
I absolutely adored this. I think that this one is my favorite that Tal has ever written. It just hit all my buttons: the hockey content (my Canadian heart was so full), the strongest found family vibes of the team, the characters 👌

I know Tal's writing style is not for everyone but I personally adore his flowery, beautiful prose. I am HERE for his "cheesy" romance. Because at the end of the day Tal writes soulmates; he writes epic & deeply romantic love stories. Everything from the small moments to the big declarations of love get me every time. And this one was no exception.

There’s just something about Tal’s characters - they don’t feel fictional. They are so layered and dimensional and real. Even the side characters are fleshed out so much we can’t help but fall in love with them too. This book is about the men. There is an overarching plotline of this team overcoming a traumatic experience and sticking together - but really at the heart of this book it’s about these men and their journey.

Morgan - This man is a literal dream man. I adored being in his POV - he had such a dry sense of humor. He is strong, dependable, devoted - the kind of man who loves with his whole heart and gives everything of himself to support those he loves. HE SHOWS UP. Every single day. It’s no wonder his team absolutely adores him and worships him. He is a natural leader (even though he doesn’t think he is special or good enough).

Shea - This beautiful ray of sunshine boy. He was so sweet and kind but also so strong and brave. I loved getting to see him through Morgan’s eyes. Morgan could wax poetic about Shea for centuries and I get it. Shea is a catch!!

Brody - Brody really took us through all the emotions. The sweetest, energetic puppy that is hiding so much pain it broke me 😭

Lawson - I mean what can I say? I’m a sucker for goalies. And Lawson was so endearing. His friendship with Brody, the way he hurt so badly near the end and just broke? Ugh.

And the romance? I loved the way Morgan & Shea’s relationship progressed. It was natural and slow in a way. They formed such a solid, close friendship first. There were times were the pining literally HURT (the scene where Shea begs Morgan and says he will be easy - ooooof). Their romance was beyond stunning - the amount of trust, respect and devotion? 👏

And finally - the team. The. Team. Their bond, their friendships - they are honestly a FAMILY. I loved them all. Every scene we get of them bonding left me so warm and happy. All the parties and family time at the rookie house Their feeling of being "sticky" where they felt like it was hard to unglue themselves from each other... I mean.. 🥺 THE OUTLAWS DESERVE ALL THE LOVE, SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN THE WORLD.

I could write an entire essay into all the intricacies of this book and how I felt but I’ll leave it at this for today. Don't even get me started on quotes or what I highlighted....

Writing this review and thinking back on how I felt while reading this kind of makes me want to cry. This will probably be my top book of 2023 and how dare Tal do that to me mid-January ✌

Imposible no quererlos.
